68 Mustang - Progress 5

March 24 - April 12, 2006

I removed the rear leafs and shocks, what a PAIN. The bolts were seized to the steel sleeve inside the bushing so I had to cut them out with a 7" cutoff wheel. My 4.5" wouldn't reach. Notice the new metal on the 1st photo (driver side) plus I already brushed it and if you look close you can see the new metal in the 2nd photo as well as the rivets I used. Rivets work well, but welding works better. Now I'm brushing off the underbody to use some Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator, then I'll spray some chassis black followed by undercoating. I was trying to adjust my parking brake and discovered I don't have the idler bracket and arm for the cable to tighten. The former owner must have cut it out when he put in new floor pans. I'm welding that on today along with a few other areas to close up some rust holes under the car. I also replaced the front shocks. My son's been helping out.. he's 16 and I think he is starting to think I was serious about him not driving unless he works on it. You'll notice the pictures of the underbody where I patched many holes and the used Eastwoods RE, Chassis Black and Undercoating. The undercoat isn't as good as I'd like. The stuff you get in a spray can isn't the same thickness as what is sprayed factory, but for now it'll do. The axle was painted with RE and Chassis Black also and then the springs, axle and shocks all went back on. I also attached and adjusted the parking brake, and put a few of the new grommets in. You can see from the pictures some of the patch work, including a new wrap on the pass. shock tower inside the fender and the frame rail patch. You can also see that the original vacuum canister is not there as I'm not sure where the one I have came from since it is shaped like a ball. I made a metal cover and bolted it in the place of where the canister would normally be but put the ball under the hood mounted to the same bolts as the cover.
