Me And The World Wide Web
As the former Sales and Marketing Director of Digital Marketing Inc. one of the Internet's finest
Web presence providers I learned quite a bit about the Internet and how it relates to
business. It didn't take long at DigiMark to realize that most business people wanted a
single source for all of their Internet needs. ASP, HTML, CGI,
Perl,
Java,
PHP, MySQL,
email, ftp, network news, graphics, site
preparation, promotion, programming, whatever. They wanted us to handle it, organize it,
and make it happen. Unfortunately we specialized in hardware not labor. As a result I
spent hours and hours on the phone coordinating the work for the subcontractors who made
most of the money.
Web Trends
Today I'm concentrating my efforts on the
coordination between website and database. I see this combination as the
real power of the internet. Though I initially worked with ASP,
ASP.NET and the Access
database which required a
Microsoft
server, I am now concentrating on the use of
PHP and the MySQL database, which are
both powerful and available free, and work beautifully on Linux as well as
Microsoft
servers. I currently have an Apache
server, using Fedora Linux, as a test
and development platform.
