Blue Mountain Arts
www.bluemountain.com/
[Blue Mountain Logo]
...helping the whole world communicate
"Polar Bear Hug"

"Polar Bear Hug"
I use this site ALL the time to send electronic greeting cards via email. It is really 100% free and the history behind the site is very interesting. The founders of the company, Dr. Stephen Schutz and his wife Susan, are dedicated to the goal of helping people communicate their feelings through poetry and art.

There is a huge variety of cards available for every occasion you could possibly imagine. I am especially partial to the ones that include Java applet animations; it is so much fun to customize them.

The Easter Egg Archive
www.eeggs.com/
{Easter Egg Archive Logo]
...hidden secrets in software, movies, music, and more!
[Chicken Laying Egg]
An Easter Egg is "any amusing tidbit that creators hid in their creations."

I have been intrigued with software Easter Eggs ever since I read about one in a computer magazine years ago; you could type in a special combination of keystrokes as you started to play the old version of MineSweeper that was included in Windows 3.x and then, when you hovered your cursor over a covered square in the game, the first pixel in the upper left corner of your screen would turn white if there was a hidden mine there. I loved it and used it all the time because I like to WIN!

This site is also run by a husband and wife, David and Annette Wolf, and they have branched out to include hidden goodies in movies, music, TV, books, and art, as well as in computers. Such fun! By the way, I always used to try to spy Alfred Hitchcock in his films!

About.com
www.about.com
[About.com Logo]
[Computer]
Since I discovered this great site (formerly The Mining Company), I have found myself using search engines less and less. Why bother going through the process when About.com has real, live human "Guides" (can you believe it?!?) in charge of all the many different areas of interest? They do the research and searching themselves and then provide us with lists of links along with descriptions.

It's a fantastic "Start Page" and I have it set for the default "Home" page in all my browsers. The site keeps a small banner at the top of your page so you can easily work your way back to where you were if you tend to wander from link to link as I do.

It saves me tons of time whether I'm just trying to find a particular piece of clipart, looking for a technical computer solution, shopping on-line, etc. You name it; it's there. And if you have expertise in a particular area, you could even apply to be one of their Guides...

~Mystiqal's~ Classic Rock MIDI Files
members.tripod.com/~Mystiqal/Music2.htm

Now playing: Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight"

[The Cream of Clapton]

I like to download MIDI files to use in making my own screensavers, on my personal web sites, and just to play on my computer while I'm working; HOWEVER... most of the web sites that have music files for download have NEW music -- and I don't know who the heck these people are! Just give me some Eric Clapton, please.

If you're in my general age group and are looking for some CLASSIC rock, this is the site to visit. It has lots of songs by the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, etc., etc. Ahhh, the good old days.

eHOW
www.ehow.com
[eHOW Logo]

...The fast and easy way to find out how to do just about anything. And get the stuff you need to do it.

[Turkey]
The first time I visited this site, I was fascinated. I couldn't stop looking at all the lists of tasks that are explained. The category "Hobbies and Games" particularly intrigued me, but they were all extremely interesting. Aren't there plenty of things that you're not exactly sure how to do... like "Buy an engagement ring" or "Clean your mouse" [Note: When I clean a sluggish mouse in a computer class, I almost always have someone ask: "How did you do that?" and then: "I can't wait to go home and clean mine!"} or "Write a sympathy card" or " Behave in a conga line" or "Stuff a turkey"...?

The interface is a simple notebook with a search box prefaced with "How To:" that you just fill in. At the end of each set of instructions, there's a checklist of things you need and it assists you in buying them either on-line or locally. I get a kick out of looking to see what's in the "Top 10 eHOWs"... today's list included: "Ask for a raise," "Avoid an encounter," "Lose weight," "Carve a pumpkin" and "Use chopsticks." There are lots of other cool little features. Check it out.

Million Dollar Homes
milliondollarhomes.com
[Million Dollar Homes Logo]
...an interactive virtual reality showcase of premier homes located around the globe.
{House}
This site is the ultimate "Dream Building" site. I love to drive around and ogle gorgeous houses, but I am frustrated that I can't go INSIDE! That's why I love house tours so much. Million Dollar Homes allows you to "peek" inside the houses that are listed. Each one has about 6 rooms that you can "go to" and "walk around in". It is run by Java applets (through PanImage™ by Be Here), so you don't have to download any extra software.

You use your mouse to turn around, to zoom in and out, and to look up and down. (I like to zoom in real close and try to look at the paintings on the wall, but the focus doesn't really work like that!) It is very cool, though -- amazing technology! -- and I can't imagine why ALL realtors don't place their listings here. You really do feel like you're inside each room.

KISSTHISGUY.COM
www.kissthisguy.com
[KissThisGuy Logo]

...the archive of misheard lyrics.
[Jimi Hendrix]
Jimi Hendrix
"Are You Experienced?"
Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" LP was the first album that I bought after I had graduated from college in 1968 and was starting my first job as a junior high English teacher. This site is named for one of the lines in "Purple Haze" -- "...'scuse me, while I kiss the sky" which was widely "misheard" as "...while I kiss this guy." This site is composed of visitors' stories of their own (or others') misinterpretations of song lyrics and some of them are really funny.

Usually they find out that they have been singing the wrong words after they have belted the lyrics out at the top of their lungs in front of friends and relatives, resulting in strange looks and hysterical fits of laughter. You can browse the site by song title, by artist, and by new entries. And what's REALLY funny is the fact that so many people didn't know they were singing the wrong words all these years UNTIL they looked at some of the entries here...!

CleverMedia Shockwave Arcade
clevermedia.com/arcade/
[CleverMedia Logo]
... the four sites in the CleverMedia Network use Shockwave technology to bring games to the Web.
[Say What?]"Say What?"
[The Snowman 3000 Construction Kit]"The Snowman 3000 Construction Kit"
[Alley Cat]"Alley Cat"
... and LOTS more!
If you're getting sick of the games you have installed on your computer, surf on over to the CleverMedia Network to try some of the shockwave games that are available on-line there. If you don't have the latest version of Macromedia's Shockwave installed, the site will automatically "do it for you" after asking you if that's what you want.

They have a virtual smorgasbord of all kinds of games to play. It's just right for a quick work break when your brain needs some diversion. I am partial to the "Say What?" word game, as well as to the "Daily Jigsaw Puzzles," but they offer EVERY kind of game here. I had to laugh at myself after I used the "Snowman 3000 Construction Kit" to create a VERY mundane snowman and then took a peek at the Gallery of what other people had done with the available pieces... she-e-e-e-sh!
