I have enjoyed renewing old memories of my brief (6 months) time in the KR at Langata Training Centre. It can't have been too bad because after returning to UK in 1959 I joined the University of London OTC, was commissioned into the Royal West Kent Regiment (TA). This was swallowed up with other SE England regiments to become The Queens Regiment. This too has been amalgamated within today's Princess of Wales Royal Regiment. I left after some 12 years service in the early 70's.

Great website! I have been greatly assisted in researching the career of former Kenya Regiment WOII Stephen KNOX by his old comrade, Peter HAYS. I just learned today that KNOX died in Darlinghurst, Sydney, Australia, on 24Jul2000. Should anybody have a photo of KNOX, I'd be appreciate of a loan so that I could copy it. Keep up the great work on the site!!

I'm so pleased that the Regiment has a place of it's own, in the History Books. I got the impression when it was disbanded, that it was the end of the road for it. Glad I was wrong. I have sent some photos in recently. Is there anyone out there that may recall our times together in No: 11 intake in 1958 Squad 2. Guard of Honour Duty for Princess Margaret, at the Kenya Agri: Show in Nairobi.I live on the Gold Coast in QLD. Drop me a line sometime.

Regarding Mr. Kipling Kahler's request to purchase a Kenya Regiment tie. As he was never in the Regiment he is not entitled to wear the tie. Cheapens the colours by only wanting to "wear it in the Muthaiga Club Gentlemen's bar". Join the KR Association, get an Association tie.

I have just finished reading mini-Sitrep XXX. Thank you to Bruce and helpers, your work must be a labour of love, and it is very much appreciated. Thank Heavens for the internet, as I have been able to contact many of my old friends, fellow soldiers and neighbours. I still look back on my Kenya years as some of the best in my life, and if a true history is ever recorded it will state that we left the country too early rather than being wrong to settle there.

Well you've just made a grown girl cry. I've been doing research into my father (Gavin Bernhardi 7247) who died when I was very young - trying to trace his life history. I found him listed here and better yet ... I even found a photo of his intake and you just couldnt miss him standing so proud and tall!!! His diaries recount this time very fondly. Thank you for making my day, month, year!!!

If anyone who visits this board remembers my dad - I know its a long shot - I would be genuinely DELIGHTED to hear from you.

Patricia and I have reterned about 3 weeks ago having had avery nice holiday on the HollandAmerica line MS Amsterdam. We went through the Panama Canal. Very interesting. We found Costa Rico the best place we saw as we found the flora very much like we were used to in Kenya. The people there very friendly. We stayed with Don kr. 4969 and Mary Rookensmith in Florida, for 4 nights before we caught the ship i Fort Lauderdale, and they were super hosts and we so enjoyed seeing them. They are both very well. I miss meeting up with our old rafikis and so that we can "whenweed" continously.

Greetings to all readers. I am researching my family history and I am looking for connections between my ancestors and the Kenya Regiment. The names of interest are from my gt grandfather Adam Plenderleith and his wife my gt grandmother Annie Wilkinson. They and various other family members arrived in Kenya c1900. Adam and Annie's children were John b.c1895; Alec b.c1898; Frederick b.c1899; William b.c1895; Robert b.c1901; Willomina b.c1906 and Ada Janie b.c1908. Ada Janie married my grandfather Jack Catterall in Nairobi, they had 3 children, Gerald Thomas 1928, Ivor 1929 and Daphne 1931. Any help that you may be able to provide would be truly appreciated, as this is very important to me. Thank you. Pauline.

Comments: I was absolutely amazed to discover this website and have browsed through it several times before deciding to jump in with both feet. I am actually looking for a copy of the Group Photo of the 17th Intake - July to December, 1961. Mine was lost during the mid-1970s. I have some photos from those times that might be of interest to some out there, including some 8mm movie now on VHS Video of the February 1963 trip up Mount Kenya as far as Point Lenana under the care of PSA Lawless. Anyone interested in sharing, swapping, or making other offers can contact me via e-mail to start the ball rolling. It appears there was a great scattering of members at one time. I returned to the UK at the end of 1964; came to Canada in 1967, married in 1971, and have been here ever since. Great country! Cheers to all.

I was born in Nairobi and lived at Thika for 19 years before joining the Australian Navy. Did a 12 year hitch then immigrated to the US and became a citizen. But back to Dad, sorry to say but he passed on nearly three years ago in Perth Australia.
We had a great life in Perth, socializing with a lot of old Kenya friends and meeting new X Kenya people. Dad always loved to entertain and talk Swahili with anyone who could remember how to. He never talked about his time in "the Regiment" except he once told me he trained Yanks how to use German and Italian captured weapons and that he lost his teeth fighting drunk Australian sailors who refused to show there passes and Mombasa's port gate.

Comments: A singularly well put together site. Extremely informative.
I suppose you could say I am 'an african person'. My Mother was born in Fort Victoria, her mother came from Ducth stock and my grandfather was a member of The BSAP, and legend had it, he had partolled riding a camel. I was born in Kisumu, was educated in Kenya, and I am quite convinced most of my soul resposes in that land of unspurpassed beauty, sudden death, blood, the smell of the earth after the rain. I miss it more every day, but I also know that the Africa I knew and loved has changed so much. On cold winter nights here in the UK, my thoughts often drift to the incredible view of Lake Victoria from my old home in the Abadares. Love Africa or hate her, she is a beast of unrivelled lore, ethereal mystique and splendour.

Comments: ROLY GUY, R.I.P.
What a loss of a very fine man and soldier, particularly to the Kenya Regiment and the Association. I first met him in July(?) 1953 as very raw man straight from Salisbury 3rd Course. We had learnt wireless procedure there, but at Marrian's Farm he gave me a very good lesson in the speech side of RT in pitch and volume requirements in using a 19 set. He also organised for me a trip in an RAF Harvard on a bombing and strafing sortie from Marrians, and that is an event I have not forgotten. FAREWELL, to a great man, and sincere condolences to his family.

Comments: Does anyone have any information on my father John Lawrence (KR 666). Looking through the guest book, there is very little if anything on people with regimental numbers of less that 1000, but then again they are probably rather old by now and unlikely to go a-surfing on the net! My father joined up in September
1939 aged 17 years, 6 months, so I assume would have been as young as one might get to have fought the whole of WW II.

I also have some photos from his albums of that time. Once I have worked out how to drive a scanner, I will get them to you.

Thanks,

Tom

Comments: I remember one memorable event though when we played golf together in a foursomes golf tournament representing Prince of Wales at Royal Nairobi Golf Club - think it was called the Grigg Cup and it was for “old boys” who had attended East African schools - and at one of the par three holes early in the round Jimmy beaned a spectator by the side of the green (I think his name was Ken Green and he was Golf Captain at the Railway course, Jimmy’s club). Anyway we went down to survey the damage and there was the poor guy flattened by the side of the green and an imprint of a “Dunlop 65” on his scalp. Needless to say poor Jimmy was pretty shook up over the ordeal as Ken was a friend of his and had come to support us and now was being taken to hospital to be stitched up, so he did not play very well, which was understandable, for a number of holes after that.

The Guardian site is www.guardian.co.uk/guardian/ and then click on "World despatch" then move down to March 7 for the actual article. Quite unbelievable how history can be twisted .
