Highland Cemetery, Providence Township, Section 20

Pioneer Cemetery

Located 25284 290th Street about 2 and 1/2 miles west and 1/4 mile south of New Providence. Follow 290th Street, the gravel road straight west out of New Providence, the road will turn left south for about 1/8 of mile then turn back to the west again and down a small hill. Look to your right about 150 feet before going down the hill, in the pasture, you will see Highland Cemetery. At one time the Highland Quaker Meeting House (1870-1905) was also at this spot. The Meeting house was later moved down the hill to the farmstead but that has since been cleared also. There was also a school house on this corner. Inscriptions on the gravestones in the cemetery indicate that many of the people interred here were members of the Society of Friends. Quite a number of the stones are broken and the oldest inscription is the death of Suzanna Marsh in 1859. She was a child of four years. The last burial was that of Rebecca Slack, wife of D. Slack, who died in 1911. Two GAR markers were also located here. According to the "Union Star", of June 29 1900, Jabe Hodson, an old pioneer settler of this county passed away in the home of his son, David, at Radcliffe, on Monday and was buried in the Highland Cemetery. However there is no stone found for him.

Pioneer Cemetery

aka Haman's Horn Cemetery
aka Southeast New Providence Cemetery

Located 28161 300th Street in Providence Township. Go east of New Providence on Hwy D55 to the edge of town and take OO Avenue south about 1 mile south and then turn east on 300th Street and it is 1/2 mile east on the north side of the gravel road. This is a small well maintained cemetery. The earliest burial found was that to Mary A Skinner Lundy on May 15, 1870. The last burial to date was in 1986. Spencer Hadley ( who was buried here in 1881) gave the land for this cemetery and a church. An Eldora newspaper for November 11, 1870 had an item for the Dedication of the Methodist Church, which stood beside the cemetery also called Southeast New Providence Methodist Church or Harman's Horn Church. The services were discontinued about 1912. The building was moved and served as a machine shed nearby. 86N 20W Sec 11 SW.

Honey Creek Cemetery, Providence Township, Section 21

Located 31122 PP Ave. 2 1/2 miles south of New providence on blacktopped S57and 1/2 mile west 310th St on black top road leading to Reece's Hardin County Park, near the Friends Church. This church is a historical landmark. This cemetery is in excellent shape and is still in use in 1999. There are no tipping or broken stones, where possible damaged stones have been repaired. This condition is a result of very good management and to some extend the result of the May Tornado of the late 1980's. The cemetery was on the northern edge of its horrific path which followed the D 65 blacktop just to the east of the cemetery. Many large trees on the west end of the cemetery were destroyed and litter scattered all over the area. The northeast corner does not appear to be in use, it is a gully type area as is the southwest corner of the cemetery and is much lower than the main area used for the burials. Originally, the Friends Meeting House and School were located on this land, south of the cemetery, but in later years the Honey Creek Church was built west and north across the road on land which was owned in 1875 by William Reece. In the year 1851, 44 Quakers, men, women & children, journeyed from Yadkin Co. N. Ca. to the wilds of Hardin Co. Ia. covering a distance of 1200 miles in two months. Six wagons carried the provisions and equipment and the mothers and young children. And all the others walked the greater part of the way. Thes stalwart pioneers settled in this area of Hardin County and here they established the Friends School and Meeting. So far as it has been ascertained, the first burial in this cemetery was that of William Dobbins who died Sep 6, 1852 at the age of 74. By the end of that September his widow, Mary and two of his grandchildren would also pass away.

Chester Cemetery, Providence Township, Section 26

Located 32028 RR Ave at the corner of 320 th Street and RR Ave in Providence Twp -- about 4 miles west of Union on D65 to S Ave 1/2 mile south to 320th St 1/4 mile west to RR Ave, across from the Chester Church. The land was given in 1869 by William Hinshaw. The first burial seems to be that of William G Hadley, 9 month old son of Tempy and Henry Hadley. Thank You to Julia Lundy Braga for all the genealogical notes that she added from her own personal knowledge. Some of the stones read in 1967 are now gone. This cemetery is still in use in 1999 and is well maintained. 86N 20W Sec26NE
