Subject: Kersey: Thomas and Ricks Connection

My name is Donald M. Ricks, and I mainly research my surname but take considerable time to review the records of collateral families. My research experience spans more than a decade and several states from Virginia south and southwestward to Texas. My home base is the state library and archives in Nashville, Tennessee. I sometimes accept commissions as a professional researching for others (CGRS means certified genealogical records specialists). Naturally, I like to document all my work.

I descend from Jonas Ricks, of Guilford County, North Carolina. My home page tells of the research goal that should be reached in 1998. I plan to publish my results by June-July. You can see the home page at:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/index.html

For a brief introduction to my interest in the KERSEY surname, I take

the first contact from an early will record, although Thomas Kersey

lived near Jonas Ricks earlier than 1790 (see 1790 census). Jonas RICKS

wrote his will 2nd day of the fourth month 1806(signed) Jonas (his

mark) RicksPublished & pronounced by the said Jonas Ricks to be his

last will & testament in the presence of(signed) Jesse Hoggat (affmd),

Thomas Kersey

(Codicil) It is also my will that my executor fullfill my covenant with

Isaac Widows the 3rd Signed as above

in the presence of (signed) Jesse Hogatt (affirmed), Thomas

KERSEY(signed) Jonas (his mark) Ricks

I transcribed this will from the original Guilford County will on file at Raleigh. Thomas Kersey might be the ancestor of Moses Kersey who married Asenath Ricks (Edward, Jonas), born 28 February 1809. Asenath married Moses Kersey in Guilford County, North Carolina, 24 October 1833.

Asenath and I descend from Edward Ricks. Edwards son John is my ancestor (moved to Blount Co., Ala.).

Another Kersey married a grandaughter of Jonas Ricks. Elizabeth Ricks (Jonas) married Jesse Henderson in Greensboro, North Carolina, 30 November 1809. Their daughter, Hannah Henderson, married Jasper Wilson Kersey, son of Ezra Kersey and Mary Odell, 14 October 1836; witnesses were Henry Kersey and M. Mendenhall. I know nothing else about these Kersey folk, but I would like to know more (with sources)

This is all the information I have on Asenath and her family, so I am not shy to share it with you. My hope is that someone will have additional information to enhance the Ricks family history book:( an excerpt)

"Asenath3 Ricks, (Edward2, Jonas1), born 28 February 1808; married Moses Kersey in Guilford County, North Carolina 24 October 1833. On 8 Janusry 1834, Asenath Kersey (formerly Ricks) was condemned by the Springfield Monthly Meeting of the Quakers for her marriage out of unity. I did not collect the actual record. Moses Kersey died 11 October 1841. In 1860, Asenath and her household appears on the census as Curtha Kersey. She owned real estate valued at $1,600, and in her household were sons John P. Kersey and Jesse Kersey.

Children of Moses Kersey and his wife Asenath6 Ricks:

i. Ruth H. 7 Kersey, born 1 October 1836; died 10 December 1843.

ii. John P. Kersey, born 24 March 1838. He was disowned by the Quakers

on 6 May 1869.

iii. Elizabeth F. Kersey, born 30 December 1839; died 15 December 1843.

iv. Jesse W. Kersey, born 19 February 1841."

Sources for children: William W. Hinshaw, Vol 1, Springfield Monthly Meeting records, 859; and 1850 U.S. Cens., Pop. Sch., Guilford Co., North Carolina, 5 Sept. 1850, dwel. 84, p. 313.

Sources for Curtha Kersey: 1860 U.S. Cens., Pop. Sch., Guilford Co., N.C., Southern Division, dwel. 235, p. 28.

I have nothing further on Jesse Henderson and his descendants and nothing further on the children of Asenath. If anyone can direct me to additional information, Ill take it from there. Why did (historically speaking) the Kersey child die in 1843?

Incidentally, the Hoggatt family appears to have come from Albemarle County, Virginia (taken from the will of Phillip Hoggatt). I am keenly interested in the origins of the Kersey family in these records.

Sincerely,

Donald M. Ricks, CGRS

Subject: Kersey: L.T. Kersey Story

Hi--

I have made a file available with a wonderful story by Laurence T. Kersey. He put together a Kersey family history and genealogy in the early forties. As far as I know, it was never published. This story is from that book. There is no genealogical information, but it certainly evokes a long gone era. The story is set in New Providence, Iowa in 1886. If you are interested, you can get a copy of the file by sending a message with the following subject:

Kersey: CMD:GET kersey01.txt

Let me know if this works, or doesn't work.

Thanks,

Marv

Hi folks--

I'm just starting to figure out how this list server program works, so I'll pass things along as I notice them. Remember that the software needs to see "Kersey:" in the SUBJECT to recognize that your email is supposed to go to the list. This is true even if you are replying to mail from the list (such as the welcome message) that doesn't have "Kersey:" in its subject. I hope this doesn't get too confusing.

Keep those cards and letters coming,

Marv

Helloo All,

I am Mariah Lawson, Great-grandaughter of Edgar Saunderson Kindley, "the Quaker Poet" who was the son of "Rev." Charles Kindley and Jane Schooley Kersey.

I have a lot of his poems that were not published in his book but only in newspapers, and I have the entire text of his Chataqua lecture "The Good Bad Boys" which I will gladly share with anyone interested.

Hope to meet more cousins!

Blessings,

I am Linda Morice, and my 3great grandmother was Catherine KERSEY (1808-1897). She married John P Chenoweth in 1838 in Boone County, Indiana. Her parents were John and Lucretia HUTCHERSON KERSEY, both born in Virginia, then moved to Boone County, Indiana. Those of us working on this family believe John's father was Thomas KERSY. I have info on Catherine's sibs but will have to get into my genealogy program, so thought I'd start here.

Look forward to family chats.

My name is Ann Roberts and I live in Dayton, Ohio. Abigail Kersey (b.

1829 in

N. Carolina; d. 1858-1868 in Indiana?) is my 3rd Great-Grandmother.

Her father was James Kersey (b. February 2, 1801 in Guilford Co., NC; m. Elizabeth Hodson (b. 1809; d. 1873) on October 26, 1826 in Guilford Co., NC; d. February 28, 1883).

He is the son of Amos Kersey (b. February 15, 1749/50 in Maryland; m.

April 19, 1794

to Eliabeth Wilson (b. February 27, 1761; d. May 18, 1835 in Guilford Co., NC); d. July 7, 1831.

His father was William Kersey (b. 1722 in Pennsylvania; m. Janary 1748/49 in Deep River MM, Guilford Co., NC to Hannah Hunt (b. January 20, 1730/31); d. November 20, 1764 in New Garden, Guilford Co., NC).

His father was John Kersey Jr. and his mother was Lois Harris.

John Kersey Jr. was the son of John Kersey (b. 1616 in Scotland?; d. 1690) and Johanna Beasley?

John Kersey is the son of Anothy Carsaye and Alice Fenimore.

The one piece of family folklore that I have is the following:

"A razor hone, now owned by Dale Kersey, Stilesville, bears the following data carved in the edge: John Kersey brought this razor hone to America from Ayrshire, Scotland in 1650. Gave it to his son John about 1706. Was given to his son William about 1742. William gave it to his son Amos about 1780. Was given to Amos' son, James, in 1830. James gave it to his son, James Jr., in 1880."

If any of this rings a bell with any of you, I would love to hear more.

<<Message: Kersey: Introduction>>

James Kersey and his wife Elizabeth (Hodson) moved to Wayne County Indiana in 1830 and went on to Hendricks Co. in 1832. James entered 320 acres of land from the Government. Eight acres of it have never been out of the hands of his descendants.

Shortly after coming to this country, he took up the study of medicine. After completing his course, he practiced his profession until the time of his death. We are told that the regular charge for a call was 25 cents.

He gathered his own herbs, mixed his own medicine, rode horseback for transportation, and would go as far as anybody would come after him.

I also have some tales about some of James' children if anyone is interested. The stories (and my source of data) is from a typed family history composed by Grandaunt Beatrice Stewart Rowland Boyd.

Unfortunately,

I do not have any record of her sources.

Subject: Kersey: Hoggatt-Kersey Discussion

This is from my book, a discussion of Jesse Hoggat and Thomas Kersey who witnessed the will of Jonas Ricks (sources available on request):

Phillip Hoggatt owned property in Albemarle County, Virginia, an area in which Nicholas4 Ricks (Benjamin3, John2, Richard1) lived during the period after 1748. Jane Thornburg married Zaza3 Ricks (Edward2, Jonas1). It was not determined if Jesse Hoggat was actually related to Phillip Hoggatt. Moses Kersey married Asenith3 Ricks (Edward2, Jonas1) 24 October 1833.

William Kersey was a member of the Fairfax Meeting in Virginia. Probably of the William or Thomas Kersey family, Jesse Kersey, born about 1753, died 7 November 1822, aged about 69 years 10 mo. 16 das. His wife Rachel died 4 January 1842, aged about 73 yrs. 5 das. Moses Kersey, born 6 September 1806, was probaby not their son, because Jesses list of children showed a son named Stephanas born 4 March 1806.

Any light that can be shed on this discussion would be helpful.

Thank you,

Donald M. Ricks

Subject: Kersey: Anthony Carsaye?

Hi--

I have some general questions for the group. I have seen a number of lineages cited as:

1. Anthony Carsaye m. Jane Fenimore

2. John Kersey Sr. 1616-c1690

3. John Kersey Jr. m. Lois Harris

Also I have seen lineages connecting American Kerseys to the John Kerseys, English lexicographers and mathematicians.

Can anyone provide sources for the Anthony Carsaye-Jane Fenimore line? Are they the parents of John Kersey the elder, English mathematician? Can anyone provide sources connecting the English lexicographers to America?
