Hi--

The list seems to be working fairly well. For some reason "Kersey:

CMD:WHO" doesn't seem to work. Has anyone else tried it? I have made a digest available of all the list mail so far. You can retrieve a copy by sending a message with "Kersey: CMD:GET digest01.txt" in the SUBJECT to millerm@halcyon.com. Please let me know if it works or not.

Don't be alarmed if you send a message to list and it shows up as forwarded to the list from me. It either means that I goofed up the list processing and your message ended up in my personal mail and had to be forwarded back or it means that you forgot to put Kersey: in the subject.

Remember attachments are very unpredictable when you send them through the list. Please limit your list postings to plain text. You can arrange to transfer the files to other folks who are interested or I can put them in the list directory so they can be accessed by "Kersey: CMD:GET filename".

I hope this is helping without getting too confusing.

Good hunting,

Marv

Hi Folks--

Please pardon the extra junk mail you have been getting. Those funny blank messages with subjects "Kersey:CMD:WHO" and "Kersey:CMD:DIR" are tests trying to get the WHO and DIR commands to work. I got a new version of the software from the vendor and WHO works now. DIR still doesn't. You should be able to send a message to millerm@halcyon.com with SUBJECT of Kersey:CMD:WHO and get a list of the active members of the list like the one below. (And it won't spray a bunch of junk mail to the rest of the list ;-) ) If I get the DIR command to work, you will be able to send a message with SUBJECT of Kersey:CMD:DIR and get a listing of files available for download. So far there are two. One is the L.T. Kersey story (kersey01.txt) and the second is the digest of the first week of list mail (digest01.txt). A message with SUBJECT of Kersey:CMD:GET filename, where filename is one of the two filenames above will result in a message back with the file attached.

(I currently have only the Family Record pages from the Bible - the remainder of what is left of the Bible is at my mother's and I forgot to get the publication date on the Bible; however I will get that information and forward it to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, the following is a direct transcription of the information contained in the Family Record Pages of the Bible. Bold words are printed in the Bible; italicized words are written on the pages; any un-italicized words in the spaces are my comments. Strikethroughs are in the original. I have added the Page numbers according to the order that makes sense; these are not on the original. Where I had trouble reading the handwriting, I have placed a (?). This Bible apparently stayed with Mary Ann Keirsey Farrell following the death of her parents and was eventually passed down to Beulah Farrell Barnes; upon her death it went to my grandmother, Lucy May Farrell Wilson. She gave it to my father and now I have it.)

I forwarded Susan Wilson's Keirsey Family Bible to the list in rich text format embedded in the mail message. Please let me know if that works or not. I have also made the file available in three different formats. You can send a message to millerm@halcyon.com with SUBJECT of "Kersey:CMD:GET keirsey.xxx" where xxx can be doc, rtf, or txt. Doc will get you a file in microsoft word 6.0 format, rtf in rich text format, or txt in plain text. The plain text loses a lot of the formatting, so I would only do that if you are having trouble with doc or rtf.

Susan - Thanks so much for sending the Bible to us. You indicated earlier that you think William Keirsey born 10 Oct 1791 is the son of Eleazar Kersey and Elizabeth Harlan. I had William son of Eleazar and Elizabeth married to Betsey Lane 23 Nov 1815 in Guilford Co., NC. You have him married to Nancy Thomas 8 Dec 1816. Are these both the same William with two wives or does one of us have the wrong William?

Marvin -

My source is a family history that was composed by my grandmother's sister.

I received a written family tree with a little history from my grandmother.

My grandaunt passed away a number of years ago and I have to date been unable to locate the orginal work that she did.

According to the data passed on to me by my grandmother, Anothy Carsaye and Alice Fenimore are the parents of John Kersey, Sr. I do not have any information that indicates John Kersey is the mathematician.

I will certainly let you know if I find out anything else.

Thanks! Ann

Marvin: I have no record of William Kersey marrying Betsey Lane on 23 =

Nov 1815. However, I do have William Kersey as the son of Eleazer =

Kersey and Elizabeth Harlan. My Dad already had this information, but I =

do not have the sources for his information. It was the same =

information as you had listed on your file all the way back to John =

Kersey and I am sure he was never in contact with you. I think what he =

did was satisfy himself that he had the "right" information and then =

didn't keep records of exactly where he got the information. On the =

whole, he has been correct when I have gone back and verified =

information so I don't have a problem with that -- I just don't have the =

original sources on some of the information yet and am trying to =

reconstruct that. =20

I suspect this is the same William Kersey and the dates don't conflict. =

It is likely that he married Betsey Lane and that she died and so the =

marriage we have recorded to Nansey Thomas on 8 Dec 1816 may well be a =

second wife and the one that lived to have the children. As you will =

note, most of the children did not experience long lives; however, =

someone in our group is a descendant of John who died rather young. =20

I do not know what happened to their sons William and Nathanial. I =

believe Nathanial was the one left alive at the time of the Civil War or =

about that time, but am not sure. I just know one of them was, but by =

the time the old man William died, he had no sons left, so the =

plantation/farm went to Richard William Farrell who was married to Mary =

Ann Kersey. =20

By the way, the daughter Martha Ann Kersey is buried in Maple Hill = Cemetery, Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, along with Mary Ann = Kersey Farrell and Richard William Farrell. I know where thedescendants = all are from there on, but as I said, don't know about the others. I = imagine the rest of the children are buried in GA -- it will be around = Decatur (near Atlanta) since that is where the farm was located. Perhaps = Coweta County???

I believe the Jesse Thomas Keirsey that is listed in the Bible as dying = on September 12, 1852, is the brother of William Kersey whose Bible this = was. If this is correct, he was the one born of Eleazer andElizabeth = Harlan ca 1796 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Does anyone know if = he moved to Georgia as well?????

I have the children of Eleazer Kersey and Elizabeth Harlan as:

William, b. 10 Oct. 1791, d. 8 Dec 1816

Alice, b. 28 Aug 1785, d. 10 Apr 1850

Ester

Stephen, b. 6 May 1789, d. 12 March 1845

Enoch, b. 10 May 1794, d. 1 Dec 1837

Jesse, b. ca 1796, d. 12 Sept 1852

Eleazer, b. 17 July 1798, d., 21 Nov 1835

Moses, b. 6 Sept 1800, d., 11 Oct 1841

Elizabeth

Does anyone have any further information or corrections to this??? =

Also, any direct sources on marriage records, etc. =20

Thanks, Susan

I have the Kersey pages from Hinshaw, Vol. 1, pp859, 889-93.

Regarding my earlier message concerning this Kersey line. I am in Salt Lake City on business this week. Escaped for the afternoon and headed to the Family Research Library! What a great place!

Found two references to the Kersey line which basically supported the data that I had from my Grandaunt Bea.

(1) Kersey Family Tree

Author: Laurence T. Kersey

Film # 1572020 Item # 6

(2) Kersey History, Genealogy, and Yearbook

Carl E. Strain

Originally compiled by Theodore Kersey

Munster, IN [1990]

John Kersey (formerly Carasaye) came to America from Ayreshire,

Scotland in 1650. It is thought he married an Irish girl named

Joanna Beasely. He first settled in Rhode Island where Roger

Williams established a colony and later in Pennsylvania with

William Penn. He then migrated to Guilford Co., NC. His

descendants lived in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, California, and

elsewhere.

Other references I will try to get to before I leave on Friday:

(3) Genealogical Gleanings relating to Robert Jones

Anna M. Nixon

... Includes Kersey (William Kersey, m. 1767, of York Town,

York, PA)....

Is the John Kersey from Scotland the direct desecent for all the Kerseys. My line of Kerseys are from Ga. I would love to find some one that could tell me if this line is from the John Kersey from Scotland. To the best of my knowledge my ggggrandfather was John A. Kersey born about 1816 some where in Ga. He married a Priscilla ( last name could have been Turner ). They had four children Nancy, Martha, Celia, and Thomas. Thomas married a girl by the name of Mary Carter, she could also have been called Susan. If any of you have any information i would loved to hear from you.

Hi, I'm Pat Henry and I'm looking for information about my GG Grandfather GEORGE MADISON KERSEY----his parents, siblings, birthplace in VA or anything anyone knows would help greatly. Information I have is as follows: His birthdate is questionable. All the census records, land bounty papers, war records indicate he would have been born @1787, but his tombstone says 1791.

George Madison Kersey, farmer, b.@1787? 1791, in VA (Co. unknown), d. 9 Sept.1863 in Sebastian Co. AR.

He m. his first wife LUCY BROCK @1810 in TN. They had 3 sons---Isaac,b. in Bledsoe Co TN, David b. in Franklin Co TN and Thomas J. b. in Davidson Co TN. Lucy d. @1826. He then m. my GG Grandmother ELIZABETH (BETSY) GILLIAM 20 Dec. 1831 in Jackson Co. AL.

George was in the War of 1812 in New Orleans under Andrew Jackson. He enlisted in Knoxville TN. While enlisted his name was listed as George Casey and George Kersey.

George and Elizabeth lived in Jackson Co. AL a few years, moved to Franklin Co. TN for a short time, then moved into Marion Co. TN. They were there in the 1850 census.

Around 1855 they moved to Sebastian Co AR.

Their children were: William M., Arthur L., Jasper N.,

Susan Paralee, George Washington, Marion (M), Martha Ann, and Tennesee Pauline.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
