Since asking my question about sources for Anthony Carsaye I have been re-reading L.T. Kersey's book. He mentions the razor hone referred to by Ann Roberts. In 1942 it was owned by Daton Kersey of Amo, Indiana. Is Dale Kersey a descendant of Daton Kersey? Is he alive? Is anyone in contact with him? Is Stilesville in Indiana? Has anyone seen the razor hone?

It appears Laurence Kersey had the same questions about connections to the lexicographer Kerseys and Anthony Carsaye. He says:

"The Dictionary of National Biography, edited by Sidney Lee, Vol. XI, Kennett-LLuelyn, 1909, contains rather full accounts of two John Kerseys, father and son. Question: Were they our ancestors? The following are brief excerpts from this Dictionary.

'Kersey, John, the elder, (1616-1690?) mathematician, son of Anthony Carsaye or Kersey, and Alice Fenimore, was baptised at Bodicote, near Banbury, Oxfordshire, on 23 Nov 1616. Kersey early came to London, where he seems to have had relatives.'

'Kersey, John, the younger, (flourished 1720), lexicographer, son of John

Kersey, the elder, revised the work of his fther. He was mainly occupied

with lexicography. The date of his death is uncertain.' "

In a letter to Daton Kersey, Laurence Kersey says "The Dictionary of National Biography has quite a lot about two John Kerseys, but it says nothing about their coming to America."

A trip to the library may be in order.

Susan, the Laurence T. Kersey book I referred to is called "The Kerseys, About Three Centuries of Genealogy and Reminiscence". To my knowledge it has not been published. I have not seen it in any library. The copy I have is a typewritten carbon copy on onion skin paper. I got it a few years ago from Tuttle's Antiquarian Books. It copies OK, but the typeface is quite rough and I can't get it to scan. I was planning to provide it piecemeal in via the GET command. So far I have only put out one file with the New Providence, Iowa story. Has anyone seen this book from any other source?

Hello!

My name is Nancy Kersey and I live in New York City. I am originally from Wilmington, Delaware where my parents and brother Chris still live. I am hoping to do some more research on my family as I dont know all that much about them except that three brothers named Kersey came from England and landed in Rising Sun, Maryland at some point. I guess that explains the slew of Kerseys in downstate Delaware who own just about everything it seems. The family up north in Wilmington did not inherit that particular trait however and we don't own much.

When I know more I will post more. If by chance there are any Kerseys on this list who know more, I'd love to hear from you. Right now I'm sending for some information so it will be awhile before I get anything back, I'm sure.

Nancy

Mary,

I have just heard from Sharon Crow about the discussion Group. I have been doing a One Name Study on KEARSEY and KERSEY and varients for the last ten years. I have most of the Births, Marriages and Deaths from the British GRO indexes and much more data. I also send out a Newsletter, but it has been some time since the last one. I would be interested to hear what might be the British origins of you all as Sharon sayes she is not related to you all.

I am Chairman of the Oxfordshire Family History Society and their Project Officer. As part of that I have today been checking a transcript of part of the Bicester 1871 Census and found several KERSEYs. I have in my office here all the transcripts of Oxfordshire Parish Records, the Marriage Index, 1851 census Index and all 1841 to 1891 census on microfiche. I also have the 1881 census and transcript fiche for all England and Wales. I will be pleased to help any KERSEY with any research that I can.

My family originated from Gloucestershire, but other groups originated from Oxfordshire and Suffolk. Some family groups added the "A" to their names about 1815.

I have recently moved to the house originally owned by my great great grandfather at:

Windmill Place, Windmill Road, Minchinhampton, Stroud, GL6 9EE, U.K.

Feel free to pass on any of this message.

Yours, Hugh (Dr. H. A. Kearsey)

There are several of us who would be most appreciative of any additions to this information:

10. *John Kersey, Jr., Born: in Ayershire, Scotland, Died: in

Pennsylvania

He was a lexicographer, (a writer of dictionaries) and he revised his father's work. He attended Merchant Taylors School from 1621 to 1627.

He came to America about 1650, and brought with him a razor hone.

*Lois (Elizabeth) Harris, Born: 1700, Married: 1744

9. *William Kersey

9. Mary Kersey

11. *John Kersey, Sr., Born: before Nov. 23, 1616 in Ayershire,

Scotland, Died: Abt 1690 in Ayershire, Scotland, mathematician

*(John Kersey)

10. *John Kersey, Jr., Born: in Ayershire, Scotland

12. *Anthony (Carsaye) Kersey, Born: in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England

The Kerseys originated in Scotland, drifted to Ireland for a few generations, then wound up in England. There is a village named Kersey near Cambridge. They were weavers, indeed kersey cloth, used so much for Civil War uniforms, is named for the family.

*Alice Fenimore

11. *John Kersey, Sr., Born: 1616 in Ayershire, Scotland

Thank you, in advance, even if you can't find anything new.

Dear Marv,

I have not got a copy of the whole book, but I do have some of the original data sheets that Lawrence sent out to get the info for the book. They are interseting because they have real handwriting of the people. If you'd like some copies, let me know.
