Eleazar Kersey was b 27 Oct 1762 & d 1 Aug 1816 (Springfield MM Guilford Co NC). My info shows his first wife as Elizabeth Carter but I don't show any children for her. I have Elizabeth Harlan as his second wife, b Aug 1762. They were married 12 Jul 1784 in either Guilford or Randolph Co NC. I have nine children for them (Enoch, Stephen, Alice, Jesse, William, Eleazar, Elizabeth, Moses & Esther). I only have birthdates for three of the children. Since Eleazar is not my direct line, I don't have much more. When Eleazar died in 1816 he left a will dated May 29, 1816 & probated in Aug 1816. In it he names his wife Elizabeth, dau Elizabeth, & sons Stephen, William, Enoch, Jesse, Eleazar & Moses.

I am looking for the parents of Jesse Kersey, born about 1789 in Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC. There are Kerseys listed on the census in Robeson Co. as far back as 1790. I suspect these families are of American Indian descent as they are listed some years on the census as "free people of color" and on others as "white". Jesse's description, however, on his service records for the War of 1812 was - height - 5'4", eyes - dark, hair - light, complexion - fair. His granddaughters had very definite Indian facial features.

Jesse served in the War of 1812 for both NC and SC. He married Maryann Elizabeth "Martha" Encomp(?) or Meincke(?) about 1813 probably in the Charleston, SC area. She was born in VA or Germany. They lived in Fairfield Co. and later Richland Co., SC.

Jesse received bounty land in Wilcox Co., SC about 1851 and he then moved to that area. He died probably about 1860 in that Wilcox Co., AL. At least four of his sons fought in the Civil War. Three of them died. Two in Knoxville, TN and one at Vickburg, TN.

I made a mistake on the information on Jesse Kersey. It was not his sons who died but the sons of his good friend Moses Lott. Two of Kersey's daughter married two of Moses' sons. Both of them died in the Civil War.

I too have been wondering where Somers Island was. After checking Passenger and Immigration Lists of some Kerseys (and variant spellings) I noticed in the list I have that most had a state mentioned that they came into. So I got to checking for Somers Island on the Eastern coast. I discovered Somers Point on the coast in NJ. Then I remembered that some Kerseys came into NJ. Somers Pt. is located at Great Egg Harbor just south of where Atlantic City is now.

There are a number of small islands there where Somers Is. could

very possibly be. Just north is also Little Egg Harbor where a number

of immigrants came into, some being ancestors of my husband. There

is the Atlantic County Historical Society, P.O. Box 301, Somers

Point, NJ. They might have more information. The county was

Gloucester before 1837 when it became Atlantic Co.

Anyway that's the conclusion I came to after thinking it was near England etc. Does anyone else have any ideas about Somers Island.

Alice has it right. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "Fernandez de Oviedo, a Spanish navigator and historian who sailed close to the Bermudas in 1515, first attributed their discovery to his countryman, Juan Bermudez. The exact discovery date is unknown, but an Italian map published in 1511 shows the islands in an approximately correct position. A 17th-century French cartographer gave the date of discovery as 1503. The islands remained uninhabited until 1609, when the English admiral Sir George Somers beached his flagship "Sea Venture" after hitting one of the reefs. Sir George died in Bermuda the following year. His companions, ignorant of Juan Bermudez, named the islands Somers Islands, which is still a secondary designation. In 1612 Bermuda was included in the third charter of the Virginia Company, and 60 English settlers were sent out to it."

This is Janas again! I had asked about Benjamin Franklin Kersey. Just wanted to let you know that I had found out that Benj. is my descendant. I was able to speak with a gentleman that was very helpful in supplying information. I was told that Benjamin was a Civil War Vet. so I tried the local Park Service where Benjamin was believed to be buried and he was already removed from that site and this man stated that the name was familiar and asked if he could call me back. Within 10 minutes he phoned back and told me that he had a file on Benjamin Franklin Kersey. I was overwhelmed. Benjamin was a Civil War Vet., And was in the 56th Al. Calvary. His children listed in the file on the census records were my Kersey's. I wanted to share this information with you and if anyone needs any info. on Benjamin I will be doing more research on him and his line. Thanks to all.
