10 Feb 1926, Soldier's Application for Confedferate Pension, Grayson TX, of B. F. Kersey, b. Newton Co GA, lived in Whitesboro TX 16 years. "My name is B. F. Kersey, I am now a resident of Grayson Co TX and have lived in said County and State for many years. I entered the Confederate ARmy from Newton Co GA enlisting in Jonesboro some time in April or May 1861 and served until the close of the WAR. I went into the Confederate Army as F. H. Kersey. I could not read nor write. My father and mother died when I was but a few years old and I belived that my name was F. H. Kersey. I was known as Frank Kersey. After the war was over and on my return home, I ascertained from the family Bible that my real name was Benjamin Franklin Kersey and since that time I have been known as B. F. Kersey and all ways sign my name, B. F. Kersey. I am now in indigent circumstances and unable to support myself and wife."

This is Bonnie Arbuthnot again. On August 8 I posted a query about Martha Jane Kersey who married Jo(h)nathan Denney b. 28 Jan. 1831 in West Elkton, Preble Co., Ohio, and lived in Appanoose County, Iowa, in the 1850's-1860's. Johnathan died 21 Jan 1869 and was buried in Appanoose Co. It is my belief that they had 6 children: Viola V. b. ca 1857; Emma E. b ca Nov 1859; William Henry b. 15 Jan 1862 in Centerville, Appanoose Co. d. 26 May 1933 in Springfield, Baca Co., CO;
Hannah R. b between 1863 and 1867; Mary E. b between 1863 and 1867; and Alva Alonso b. 24 July 1868 in Appanoose Co d. 30 Aug. 1932 in Springfield, Baca Co. CO. According to the Death Cert. of William Henry, Martha Jane KERSEY was b in NC.
Marv, you wrote that Stephanus KERSEY and Phoebe Johnson had a child named Martha J. born in NC who might be the right one. However, the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 1, Page 859, shows Martha Jane KERSEY, daughter of Stephanus and Phoebe was b. 17 April 1825 d. 4 March 1837. Therefore, this couldn't be the Martha Jane I am seeking.
New information:
1860 Appanoose Co. Iowa Census shows:
Henry KERSEY living near Johnathan and Martha Jane (Kersey) DENNEY.
Henry 46 M NC
Elizabeth 44 F NC
Isaac 16 M NC
Ann M. 6 F Iowa
Melinda R. 3 F Iowa
Does anyone have any information about this family and any possibility that my Martha Jane could be part of it?
Thanks again
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie--
Maybe more false leads for you, but I have a Henry Kersey who married Elizabeth Hiatt 16 Aug 1837 in Guilford Co., NC. Elizabeth was born 3 Jun 1816 which corresponds to the census data. Henry was born 23 Aug 1812 which almost corresponds. I can't connect Henry to a Martha Jane. He had a sister Jane born 1821, too young to be your Martha Jane. Anyway, Hinshaw probably has more on this family that could help.
Hope this helps,

What does it cost etc. I was told this morning that it costs to subscribe to this. Is this true, and how much? I am still interested, but don't want anything coming off of my credit card etc etc etc.

I'm still looking for George's parents etc. I'm sure George and Pleasant were related in some way. Any help greatly appreciated!!!!!

thanks,
I guess you think I'm an idiot! Several thing have happend since I've been on the Net, and I am getting cautious.
Sorry, if I offended. Forgive me! I want to find my family so bad that I paid some of the researcher, and got very little. I've gotten more on my own, and less costly. I've been at this for about thirty years-----off and on.
Researching more families, but consentrating just on Kerseys now until I get
the info I want.
apologetically,

Marve when I first signed on I got E-mail from someone named Easysky. I've tried to E-mail this person back, but the mail keeps coming back to me. I fou nd their Kersey. I will give it to you , maybe you can post it.
Stephen N. Kersey ( not my Steven ) listed on the 1870 Jackson County Alabama Census. He is 35 yrs old--Farmer, wife Elizabeth 29, born Tenn, son Jackson 11, twins Adam & Eve 4, Issac 1. born Georgia.
It would have been nice if our Kersey's would have named their children different names. It's very confusing. Although It probably ties them all together. Since they probably named the children after Grandfathers, and Ggrandfathers!
I've had a lot of info, and fun since I signed on.

Here is an interesting item clipped from the News Journal newspaper of Wilmington Delaware on Friday, September 26, 1997:
KERSEY FARM TAKES STATE TREE TITLE
Home to Delaware's biggest mulberry
Viola, Delaware -- A 44-foot tall whie mulberry tree was certified Thursday as the biggest of its kind in Delaware, easily dethroning the previous champion.
The new champion, whose trunk is 13 feet, 7 inches around is on the Viola farm of Olin and Irene Kersey, behind their house on Kersey Road.
The tree previously listed as champion, near Cowgills Corner east of Dover, is a ittle more than 9 feet in circumference.
Divison of Parks and Recreation official Timothy Kaden spotted the tree Thursday as officials prepared to dedicate a historical marker on Kersey Road. The marker commemorates the centennial of a Jewish farm settlement in the Viola area.
The Kersey tree is an estimated 125 to 150 years old. White mulberry trees, which are not native to theUnited States, were planted in Delaware in the 19th century in hopes of building a silkworm industry here. That idea failed.
While the Kersey tree easily won the Delaware crown, it is dwarfed by two trees that are competing for the national title.
I thought this was an interesting area for several reasons. I have resumed my research on the Kerseys in Delaware are there are quite a few, especialy down state. I have met a few of them and we agree that the first Kerseys in the area were three brothers who arrived in "Rising Sun". Thing is , no one is sure whether that wa Rising Sun, Maryland (which is nearby) or Rising Sun, Delaware so my research has a ways to go. The Delaware Historical Society charges a small fee to access its extensive library on the web and between that and the Everton Publishers Web, I should make progress and I'll let you all know what I find on my branch of the family. If any of you Delaware kerseys are reading this, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks.
Nancy
