Date: Thu, 27 Dec 2001 12:05:56 EST From: DevonESmith@aol.com Subject: Re: Rowan Kersey Cathy You're talking about Rowan being born approximately 100 years ago and there certainly were records being kept and births being registered by Indian mothers at that time. Searching for non-white or mixed blood ancestors is a bit more challenging but it CAN be done so take heart. I'm not an emotional genealogist. My father has one adopted sister - she was the daughter of his uncle (father's side) who's mom got TB after she was born. She was fostered by my grandparents and eventually adopted. I list her as their child with the note 'adopted in infancy, birth child of Vernon and Tiny Sargeant Clark' - it's an accurate record of her relationships within the family and accuracy is the point of it all for me. How I wish my ancestors had kept accurate records ;) Where was Rowan adopted from? Was he born there? An rumours of a particular tribe or unusual 'family names' that might yield a clue? I think the thing to do is answer all Rowan's questions of who, where, when, what, why and then go in the direction he leads. My family is profoundly mixed-blood; Euro, Native and Negro. I work with these issues on an ongoing basis and have established some supportive genealogy friends who are in the same boat. We'll be happy to help you as we can with this mysterious ancestor. You haven't lost anyone - Rowan is simply leading you onto another branch of the family tree :) Take a look at the info you have and see if there are any clues you can dig up, no matter how small and insignifigant they seem. As the saying goes, from little acorns mighty oaks grow! cheers Devon

Jasper Kersey is mentioned toward the end. http://www.larkcom.net/org/ancestry/turner/sources/1889_other_history_nw_ar. htm History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas (Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889) THE CIVIL WAR Men Killed.-In the atrocities of war a number of defenseless men were killed in Sebastian County, among which were the following: Gus Rutherford, a Union man, was hung by some State or Confederate troops at or near Greenwood. One McGoins, a Union soldier, who lived in the eastern part of the county, was caught and hung near Greenwood, while in the county recruiting soldiers for the Federal army. He was charged with having led a company of Union men, who had hung a Southern sympathizer by the name of Martin, because he was reporting Union men. Logan, a boy sixteen years old, Bridges and two men named Robins, all young men, were hung. After the Union army took possession of Fort Smith, John J. Johnson, a citizen thereof, and a Confederate, was called from his house and shot in his own yard. John Roland, who lived within three miles of town, was killed by a Confederate bushwhacker lying out and watching his opportunity. John Looman and Daniel Norton, Union men, while in camp one night about a mile from Fort Smith, were killed by Confederate scouts. In June, 1864, Capt. Turner and two men belonging to the Home Guards were killed near Greenwood by bushwhackers. The same month A. Paden, Thomas Paden and George H. Hill, Union men, were killed by bushwhackers near Fort Smith, and Patrick McKinzie, an original secessionist, but who had taken the oath of allegiance to the United States, was killed eight miles southeast of Fort Smith by a bushwhacker. Jasper Kersey was shot near Salem because he had joined a company in the Nation, and came out to see his folks. Other persons not herein named were also killed. Some desperate outlaws were executed by the citizens for their mutual protection. Marv Miller marvingmiller@attbi.com http://home.attbi.com/~kerseylist

Your Walter Kersey lived for awhile with Arthur and my G Grandmother Nancy, in Exeter, Barry Co. MO. I heard my Mother talk ofWalter and his wife. Also their daughter Ruby. I think she said that Ruby had a brother John David Kersey who lived in Joplin MO. Am I correct about that? I have a picture of Ruby as a lttle girl. Also a photo of Walter taken at my Great Grandparents home in Exeter. If you 're interested in them I'd be glad to make copies and send to you. Okay, this is some of what I have off the top of my head: Ruby was my grandmother, with whom I lived most of my life! Her brother was John Henry Lee. They called him John Lee, but Grandma couldn't say it right, so she called him John D., which stuck. He was called John D. all his life. He lived across the street from us all my life. I know nothing about George Madison. I just found out his existence yesterday! I would love to find more, so if you have any needs, please let me know! I would love to see the pictures! I have a bunch of pictures, also. I also have marriage licenses and death certificates, everything... I have one sister, Paula, and I have all the family stuff, which is considerable. I'm afraid it is the family that I know. I will get into it and look for other people, maybe some I don't know... Thanks so much for your response. My email is patfav@redshift.com. Let me clarify a couple of things. Rowan's birth Mother abandoned him. The Kersey family took him in. I used the termed adoption because that was all I knew to use. So really he wasn't adopted by any legal means. As for finding his birth mother, I just don't know. I have been hunting my mothers family for as long as I have been on this list and so far no luck. They were blackfeet. In the south makes it that much harder. Vick surname. Although I have found alot of Vick's and information I haven't found my line. My biggest thing about Rowan wasn't that he wasn't a full blooded Kersey, it was the way he was treated. I have a hard time with anyone being raised that way and the more I research the past the more I find of it the less I like it. It seems to of happened alot. I'm really a softie at heart. My family tells me it came from the Joiner side of my family. LOL Okay if anyone has any new ideas I sure would like to hear them. You have given me some good ideas Devon and I plan to just aggravate my family into telling anything they know. Maybe I need to buy a tape recorder. Too funny! Cathy

Go to web page http://home.attbi.com/~kerseylist/ 2. Select Kersey Family 3. Select Kersey Pictures 4. Click on the picture or the "Kersey Genealogy" caption You should see two windows. The first has thumbnails of all the pictures. You can double click any of them to get a larger version. The new pictures are always at the end. The second window has a larger version of picture number one. You can sequence through the pictures one at a time manually or select "play" and the pictures will sequence automatically. Hope this helps, Marv Miller marvingmiller@attbi.com http://home.attbi.com/~kerseylist
