Hi folks--
Happy New Year! I have been thinking about some ideas for the group for the New Year. It seems like we have a great deal of Kersey information amongst us. There ought to be a way to pool it so we all can benefit and others can access it too. Here are some web pages I have seen that might give us some ideas:
1.
http://www.surnameweb.org/ring/This is service that links pages for specific surnames. The concept would be to set up a Kersey surname ring that would link all the web pages dealing with the Kersey family. This would be an easy step to take.
2.
http://www.blueneptune.com/~hinshaw/index.htmThis is a beautiful site put together by the Hinshaw Family Association. They have a massive amount of data, pictures, text, etc. Very ambitious.
3.
http://www.accessone.com/~jegge/chenweth.htmSimilar to the Hinshaw site, a very large collection of data put together by a large group of Chenoweth family researchers.
Does the group have any interest in putting together a project like one of these? Any other ideas?

Linda,
I would love to have more info. My Steven ( Stephen ) came from South
Carolina. He was born around 1812. I get this by calculating the U.S. Census.
Family stories are that Steven was an Indian, adopted by (?) Kersey. When he
was adopted is not known. Steven would have been about 18 years old during the
time of the Indian removel. I have found the Kersey name in the full blood
Seminoles, and also the Black Chickasaws. I know the story about the Indian
part must be true, because about two years ago I met Steven's GGrandaughter
who lives in South Florida. She told the exact same story almost word for
word, as I have heard it from older relatives here in Pensacola. This lady's
grandmother was Pocahontas Emma Kersey, who was Steven and Mary's youngest
child. Steven's second son Benjamin F. Kersey ( my greatgrandfather ) came to
Pensacola with Steven and family around 1880. Ben stayed in Pensacola, and
Steven and Mary went on to South Florida . They settled somewhere around
Ruskin, Fl. I have Census proof of all of that. I can't find Steven before
1850.
There are a lot of Black Kersey's . I don't know who Steven's real parents
were. Kersey could have been his real father. Why would anyone take an Indian
child and educate him to be a doctor? I am Caucasian, as well as the rest of
my family, until we get to Steven . There are a lot of unanswered questions,
and I need help desperately.
I would appreciate anything you could do to help.
Thank you,
Doris Kersey Buffum

Marv -- I just picked the grandfather of my gg-grandfather (generation 3,
William KERSEY) as a place to start. With regard to slave information, I
know that William KERSEY (generation 3) owned several plantations
around Decatur GA (outside Atlanta). This information is from a cousin who
was tracing Farrell information with whom I have lost all contact and from
family history from my grandmother. According to the story, he was running
the blockade selling cotton and being paid in gold (not confirmed, but makes
a good story). In any event, his son pre-deceased him and the plantations
went to his daughter's (Mary Ann) husband, Richard William Farrell. The
story gets really messy at this point, but the plantations went the way
plantations went in GA and at some point Mr. Farrell moved to north Alabama
(Madison County) -- possibly via TN. I am quite certain that this Kersey
owned slaves (probably Farrell also), but have no records to verify this
information.
Regarding Kersey's listed as black on census records, I am sure everyone remembers that it was not uncommon for slaves to take the name of their owners during this time. This practice may account for what appears to be a sudden appearance of black Kerseys in the census records.
If anyone has information regarding this particular William Kersey -- plots, land-holdings, census data, etc., I will appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

To all,
I am having problems with my personal web site. Probably my incompetance!
Yes, I did mess up the address! It shoud be, when it works:
http://members.aol.com/HKearsey/Index.htmIt looks as if my last uploads got corrupted. I reuploaded Index.htm yesterday. It seems as if that now works, so I will reupload the Kent KERSEY files. However, I spent yesterday updating them as I had new information. Today I hope to add some 1881 census data I had previously overlooked. I don't understand the problem as my Oxfordshire Family History Society site works alright.
Email me direct and I will attach any pages to a reply email. At least that works with AOL!
I do a "One Name Study" of KERSEY & KEARSEY, so should have most records of these names in England.

Alice,
Thanks for the information. We appreciate all the help that we can get. I include Janas M in on this, we are cousins. We found this out through the Kersey line. We have the same greatgrandfather. B.F. Kersey. What is so confusing to me is; my Kersey's are listed as white on the Census Records. The only hint of dark complexion is on B.F. Kersey's parole papers from a Union Prison after the war. Ben was captured in TN. However when he came to Florida his neighbors are listed as Colored. I have a picture of Ben's daughter and she is white, but with indian features. I really believe that our hiertage lies with the Indians somewhere. I just can't find documented proof. The only thing that I have found is the Kersey name among the Seminoles, and the Chicksaw. Also the fact that Ben's father, Steven named some of his children indian names. William Jasper, ( Ben's brother ) named some of his children indian names. I am told that I have an Indian nicname. My father died when I was a baby, but he gave me the nicname of Nuneea, which means child of the afternoon. My birth certificate shows that I WAS born in the afternoon.
Sorry to be so lengthly, but wanted to clear up the Slave portion of this
Somehow I must have confused everyone, with my e-mail.
My hiertige could be among the Black Indians, but I don't know WHERE!
Calling all Kersey's, PLEASE HELP!

Hi Hugh--
Upper and lower case does seem to make a difference to Netscape. I can't access your Kent pages as they are linked on your main page. But if I edit the URLs to change the file names to KENT.htm and KEN_Tree.htm, they work!!
Are there multiple pages to the Kent family tree? The page I can see has references to page 2 and page 3 that I can't see.

To all the Kersey folks:
I got a new toy for Christmas and have scanned the family pages of our Keirsey family Bible. These are attached for those of you who can decipher a .jpg format. I sharpened the images as best I could with a photo program. If anyone can't open the files, I will be happy to e-mail you the unsharpened images if you will send your address to me directly. Happy New Year to all!
Oh, I sort of named the files in the wrong order. Try starting with #3 or #4 for the oldest information.

We all have to learn all those unwritten peculiarities about web sites and the Internet. I will amend the liks on my main page.
I also now realise that page numbering makes no sense when a document is saved in html. I will remove references to pages and try to add tags. Did the coat of arms show up? I may move that out of the document and put a link to it on my main page.

My husbands family has one, and I have it framed. I'd like a Kersey one to go beside it. Weather my GGGrandfather was adopted or not, I am a Kersey! I appreciate all of your hard work in bringing this page to us. Marv has done an excellent job in getting all of us Kerseys together,. I look forward to my e-mail. I print and save everything. Hi Peggy--
Sorry for the confusion. No, we are not related that I know of. I have been collecting the Kersey information that people have been posting and putting it in my database so that when I am doing research I will know if I have found a connection with anyone in the group. I side effect is that when I update my web page from my database, all of that information shows up. I have also been adding miscellaneous Kerseys that I find here and there. A.W. Kersey and the Nannie Kersey who married W.B. Carlile are in that category. I found their marriage records in the Family Tree Maker marriage bundle. I really appreciate your information linking them to other Kerseys. That's what I think this list can really do well. We have a chance to pool a lot of information and start to tie the bits and pieces together.
By the way, I would be happy to do lookups for anyone in the group in the FTM marriage bundle, FTM census bundle, New England Genealogical and Historical Register (not much Kersey information, but lots of New England) or in Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy (I have vol. 1 North Carolina, vol. 2 Pennsylvania and New Jersey, vol. 4 & 5 Ohio, and vol 6 Virginia).
In general I am related, however distantly, to everyone on my page except for three groups. One is the Kerseys where I have been putting all the lines I know about on the page. The other two are ancestors and descendants of President Franklin Pierce and of Josiah Bartlett, second signer of the Declaration of Independence. In those cases there are family legends that we are somehow related to those two famous people, so in trying to find a connection, I have been recording everything I can about them. So far I have shown that Franklin Pierce and Josiah Bartlett are related to each other but not to my family!

The top level URL for Hugh's page seems to work fine now. The links to the Oxfordshire and Kersey Family of Kent pages also work. The Kent Family Tree link still points to KEN_TREE.htm, but needs to point to KEN_Tree.htm. The Kent KERSEY Coat of Arms link points to KENT_COA.gif, but needs to point to kent_coa.gif. You can edit those last two file names into the URL and get to the pages. You will like the coat of arms. Hugh - don't keep us in suspense! What does the motto mean? D,
The problem seems to be a mixture of internet illiteracy (mine), and AOLs
inability to read its own web sites! Also Upper/lower case seems significant
and AOLs FTP system seems to change names randomly. However, I attach the GIF
version of the coat of arms (uncoloured) together with the description of the
colours (in old English!).
>From about 1838 to at least 1850 he was a Boot and Shoe Maker living at High Street, Deptford. At the time of his marriage, Robert was living at Blackman Street, Southwark. By 1879 they were living at Hurst Lodge, High Road, Lee, Kent. Robert was granted a Coat of Arms in 1879, and was described as "Cousin to the late John WOOLMORE, chairman of the Hon. East India Company and Trinity Board." Details of his Arms are as follows: Livery. Dark Blue, brass buttons. Armoral BearingsArgent on a pile between two roses gules, barbed and gelded proper boar's head carped of the field. Mantling Oxalis and Argent. Crest On a wreath of colours upon a mant. vert. between two branches of cinquefoils, a boar's head in the arms. Motto"Peractus conamine".
In his will, Robert said his coat of arms should only be used by his direct
descendents!
There is a fair chance (if you have Explorer4) to read the full Kent Kersey
family history. Try :

No need to apologize. The pages are beautiful. We are all friends here, and all learning how to do this list stuff together. Given that there doesn't seem to be any one way to get a file out to the whole group, I think the best thing is not to attach files to messages to the group. (Notice that I violated my own suggestion several times already today. I'm learning too.) When someone has a file that might be of interest to the group they can send a group message advertising the file and inviting individuals to ask for it. Then the file owner can respond to each request. Or I will be happy to add files to the GET directory and those who can access files that way can get them for themselves and I can mail individually to anyone whose combination of mail software, servers, etc. doesn't let them GET files. Any other ideas?

Kersey Group,
I have had the Kersey Coat Of Arms all along. I didn't think that it was a
valid coat of arms until, I received the one from the Kersey list, yesterday.
My uncle William A. Kersey gave it to me before he died. I didn't know where
he had gotten it from, that's the reason for not thinking it real.
Here's what is on it.
THE KERSEY COAT OF ARMS HEREBY ILLUSTRATED IS OFFICIALLY DOCUMENTED IN BURKE'S GENERAL ARMORY. tHE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTIONOF THE ARMS ( SHIELD ) IS AS FOLLOWS;
"AR. GUTTEE DE POIX A SALTIRE GU."
WHEN TRANSLATED ---THE BLAZON ALSO DESCRIBES THE ORIGINAL COLORS OF THE KERSEY
ARMS AS:
"SILVER; SPRINKLED WITH BLACK SPOTS; A RED CROSS."
ABOVE THE SHIELD AND HELMET IS THE CREST WHICH IS DESCRIBED AS:
"A BOAR'S HEAD SEVERED GOLD."
Hope this is some help. Sometimes we are in possession of things that we don't realize to be the truth, until someone else shows it to us ! I will now frame this and hang it along side of the Buffum Coat Of Arms, thanks Hugh.
Also thanks to Susan, for the Bible pages. I gave Hugh credit for that, sorry.
I have heard a Durey Kersey mentioned in the family. Could he be some kin to
my Steven? On one of the Census reports , Steven's name is spelled Keirsey.

I haven't heard from you in a while. Since you sent Janas my way, you sort of
sit back. Come on Girl get in here and help us find the puzzles of this side
of the family.
I would be so pleased if I could get on with the rest of my geneology, and
leave the Kersey's rest for a while. I haven't touched my mother's side of
the family since I vowed to not do any more until I found Steven before
Alabama. Someone told me to try Laurens County, South Carolina. CAn you help
with that?
Looking forward to meeting you , if you get home anytime soon.
Cuz,
Doris

No, Marv, it wasn't anything said by you or any member of the Kersey
list that prompts me to unsubscribe. You are doing a very good job
there. I just didn't have much personal reaction to the messages in a
family way. I've learned as much as I could about the Kerseys of
Guilford County, and I sold a few books to some of your list members. If
they have questions for me, many know my email address. I have your
email address in case something shows up that might interest you or
members of the Kersey list. Keep me in mind if you need any response
from the Ricks side.
I appreciate your hard work and dedication to your ancestors, which benefits those on your list (including me). Not many people are willing to take action such as you have. I encourage you to continue your attitude of service; people don't always acknowledge such contributions of time, energy, and love of family, but they appreciate the fact that there is a leader such as you involved. Let me state for them that you are a valuable leader, and what you are doing will have a measurable impact in the preservation of history for many families.
Do me the honor of posting this message to the list, because I wish that you would see the amount of light you cast.
With appreciation,
Donald M. Ricks

I put a plea on the GOONS list and got the following replies!!!
1."Peractus = sharp, shrill
Conamine = probably from the root 'conamen' effort, endeavour.
Today it would most likely translate as 'Hard Worker', or more
romantically as 'Strong Willed'."
2. "Literally translated:
peractio = last act.
conamem = effort, support
The pictorial figure(s) on the device (shield) might give a clue as
to what is meant as there is sometimes a pun or a play on words
involved in the exact translation of the motto?
I will go for "We Kersey's will support you to the end".
3. "May I suggest it should read
"Per actus con anime". Perhaps that might mean something like "By action,
with life"."
4. "Short witted"
5. "Sharp endeavor"
6. "You attempt by doing it"
7. "carried through/completed by/with support/effort"
Take your choice!
I only have a false one through my mothers family! The KEARSEY coat of arms was granted to a nephew of a KERSEY. Before he could inherit a large sum of money, he had to change his name to KEARSEY and take out a Coat of Arms.
I think that line has now died out as they specialised in daughters. One married Baron Redesdale and their children were the infamous MITFORD sisters.
I will try and put that story on the web soon.
