Miscellaneous list news items:
1. We are getting bigger. The list was up to 40! We have had a couple of "unsubscribes" since then, but overall progress.
2. I'm sure we would all like to hear from some of the folks who haven't had much to say so far. I think we have amply proved that no one should be intimidated by our technical prowess or our genealogical expertise. ;-) We would all love to hear what your Kersey family interests are, and what information you have for the group.
3. If you have more than one email address, the list software only knows about one unless you subscribe separately under each address. So, for example, if you try to GET a file from an address that the list doesn't know about you will get an error message instead. You may also miss mail depending on how you are forwarding between addresses etc.
4. We've tried three file transfer methods with varying degrees of success. a) Attaching a file to a list posting - this doesn't seem to work at all. b) Archiving a file and retrieving with "Kersey:CMD:GET filename" - this seems to work most of the time.
c) Attaching the file to a non-list email - also seems to work most of the time.
Remember that no matter what transfer method is used, you must save the file with the same file extension that was sent (.jpg, .gif, etc.) and you must have software to view the file type that is sent. For the Bible pages that means a .jpg viewer, for the coat of arms that means a .gif viewer. Netscape will work as viewer for these file types. Click of File, Open Page, Choose file, select ALL file types, browse for the file name, and click on open, click on open. The file should appear. Internet Explorer is similar: click File, click Open, click Browse, select All files, browse for the file, click Open. Explorer will ask a couple of times whether you want to open the file or save it, which makes no sense as you opening a file that is already saved. So answer Open. Eventually it will produce the picture.
Some folks haven't succeeded in getting the Bible pages or coat of arms by any of these methods. I will continue to work with them separately so they can see also.
5. We have quite a few files available now via "Kersey:CMD:GET filename". I will send out a separate email with a listing.
6. The group consensus seems to be that we should try to establish a ring for Kersey web sites. I will work with the Surname Ring people to set that up. I don't think they are quite ready to start yet, but soon. Standby for directions on how to link you site to the ring. Maybe we can get a color version of Hugh's coat of arms for the ring logo?!
We are off to a great start for the new year.

digest??.txt - digests of postings to the Kersey list. ?? must be replaced with two digits 01 through 13.
keirsey?.jpg - Susan Wilson's beautiful images of her Kersey Family Bible. ? must be replaced by a digit 1 through 4.
ltk??.txt - Chapters from Laurence T. Kersey's book about the Kersey family. Descendants of John Kersey of Pennsylvania, and especially concentrating on descendants of Asher Kersey (1807-1902) from North Carolina, Indiana, Iowa. ?? must be replaced with two digits 01 through 11. I will get back to this and add the remaining chapters.
keirsey.doc - text version of Susan Wilson's family Bible in Word format
keirsey.rtf - text version of Bible in rich text format
keirsey.txt - text version of Bible in plain ASCII text format. This is the simplest file format and most likely not to get garbled by mail software, etc.
KENT_COA.gif - Hugh Kearsey's excellent Kersey family coat of arms
kersey01.txt - "The Leader of the Chester Amateur Band" a wonderful story concerning William Wade Hinshaw, compiler of the Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy. The story is taken from L.T. Kersey's book.
list.txt - a listing of members of the Kersey discussion group and their email addresses
files.txt - a listing of files available via "Kersey:CMD:GET filename", i.e. a file version of this email.

About a coat of arms--- I was told by the Buffum Historian that down the Buffum line, as each son inheirted the coat of arms, after he married, he then would add something to the crest to signify his family, and so on. Isn't that quite possible with the Kersey Coat Of Arms also ? There could be many additions to it, but the main coat of arms would always be what was registered. when it was first drawn up.

Nancy: Hugh is entirely serious.
There are several books available in any good library that explain the Arnorial system of Britain. I have a small book of 122 pages, titled , "Heraldry. Ancestry, and Titles, questions and answers", that should be in every genealogists library. It was first published in 1862 and re-published in this century by Mr. L.G. Pine through the Gramery Publishing Company in New York. A couple of other books of use are: Burke's Peerage and Burke's Landed Gentry.
Hugh's comments are very polite on the subject. You should have heard what my cousin John Wilson of Kent on something, just outside of London had to say on the subject. Since I asked the question just as he noticed that I had, by local standards, over tipped the waitress, his answer started...Oh you Yanks.....
John was a librian in his town and a great person to talk with.
Unfortunatly, he is no longer with us.
Hope this helps in some small way.

I sent the Kersey Coat of Arms in color and in black and white. I sent it by

Maybe it went the way of everything else that goes through AOL !!!!! I can
send it again, or mail it out. My son-in-law showed me how to do it. It may
not be an authentic coat of arms. Then again, it might be! Until someone tells
me different, and proves that it is not authentic, it will hang in my computer
room along side of one that goes back to King Henry 11( The Buffum Coat Of
Arms ).
I think the 4th of July gives us the right to do anything we want with it. I
have had it about twenty years, but wasn't sure about it until Hugh Kearsey
sent his over the net. when I saw the Boars Head on top of the Sheild, it made
me think that mine just might be the real thing. If the flower on it is a
rose, it means the mark of the seventh son. I never noticed the flower before
Hugh sent his.
Somebody let me know if it came through.

Partly joking - yes.
Coats of Arms were granted to particular people for their own personal use, not to all distant cousins, people with similar names etc.! They could allow its use by their descendants or not. It is a bit like copyright or patents but goes on for ever.
Use would include putting the coat of Arms of your carriage (or car), flying it as a flag or putting it on your letter head!
The black and white version of the Arms was received, but not the colour
version
kcacolor.jpg was "incorrect format" Incidentally that version is not the ne
that fits the description held by the family. I will have to do a bit more
digging! However, how a coat of arms appears is very much an interpretation
by the artist.

Marvin Henry,
The Buffum's ( Bougham- British spelling ) still have cousins in England. They
don't care too much for the Yanks. They call the American Coat of Arms a
Generic Brand and none of them are legal.
My contention is as I have always stated; That's what the 4th of July was all
about!!!
I will hang my generic brand along side of the real thing ! All we use them
for in America is for Bragging Rights . I certainly respect the Brithish
right to complain about it!
Besides don't call me Yank, I'm from the South.

Hi Nancy...I know your problem. I live in a small two room apartment that
griws smaller each day. Hugh sounds like a person who would be great to sit
a talk with for a day or two. I'm going back over there this summer...who
knows. If you would like to read the book I have sometime, just holler, and
I will send it to you.

Hugh,
it looks like the one you sent, only it wasn't hand drawn. It was at the
request of my uncle drawn by an artist.
I will try to send the other one again. I did pretty well considering I am

I have updated my web page with frames, more data, etc. Still a few bugs, but take a look. Also there is now a Kersey Family Web Ring. Let me know if you think I am taking too much of a risk with the Kersey coat of arms. ;-) If you have a web page and you want to be added to the ring check out my page for details. If you already know how web rings work, you can get the code fragment for this ring by sending email to

Teresa,
Just looked at your web site and was really impressed. I believe that we are connected, just at a glance you have 48 surnames that are in my surname list. I am the gggrandaughter of James Lindley Kersey, son of Carter Kersey and Abigail Lindley & Lydia Ellen Frazier, daughter of Thomas Frazier and Ruth McCracken. My ggrandmother was Estella Jane Kersey, daughter of James and Lydia, my grandmother, Wanda Lillian, was the daughter of Francis Morrison Jones, son of Jasper Newton Jones and Margaret Ann Trueblood & Estella, my mother, Lois Estella, is the daughter of William Allison, son of Albert Franklin Allison & Ora Belle Larkins & Wanda Lillian.
I don't have alot of information on Jasper Newton Jones other than he was born in Tenn. and later the family moved to Iowa. The same goes for Albert Franklin Allison, I know that he and his parents were born in ILL. and moved to KS, and then to OK.
I've only been working on our family genealogy since April of 1997, and have most of the information on the Frazier's and the Kersey's. I'm trying to work on the side lines, tracing them back as far as I can go.
Your surnames and mine that are the same are: Allison, Ballard, Beals, Beeson, Bennett, Bishop, Bond, Boone, Borton, Bowater, Carter, Cartwright, Chamness, Clayton, Coffin, Cox, Crawford (Albert Allison and wife lived with them in KS and I think some where we are related), Dillion, Doan (one of Jasper's son's middle name was Doan, think that some where we re connected), Dixon, Eastman, Edwards, English, Faucett, Frazier, Hadley, Harvey, Haworth, Hiatt, Hinshaw, Hodges, Hoggatt, Hunt, Jones, Kersey, Lindley, Milken, Osborn, Overton, Pearson, Schooley, Sears, Simcock, Stanfield, Stanley, Vestal, Whipple, and Woolman. I know that I have missed a bunch, but this was at a quick glance.
I'm glad to see so many of my surnames in one place, so that I can verify what I've already got. My frustration on my family has been on the Allison and Jones side. If I had those two surnames passed where I've got them, I could tie in alot of information that I have in my filing cabinet. And evidently I will.
I would like to know from you if I can contact you to get any additional information on these lines?
I have some old pictures of the names I told you above, if you'd like to see them ie James and Lydia.
Thanks for all your help and you can email me at
