The Kersey Family Discussion List is now available in Digest form. We have 40 Kersey researchers on at least 3 continents. All variations of spelling, such as Kirsey, Kearsey, Keirsey, Kiersey, etc., are open for discussion.
To subscribe to the digest, simply reply to this email without editing the subject line. The frequency of digest releases will, of course, depend on traffic on the list. Recently, that has resulted in about one digest per week.
Regular list members have the option of receiving the digest in addition to their regular subscription, or switching to digest only. If you now get the list and want to add the digest, again simply respond to this email without editing the subject. If you want to switch to digest only, respond to this email and then send another with the SUBJECT set to "Kersey:CMD:UNSUBSCRIBE" (without the quotes).
To subscribe to the regular Kersey Family Discussion List and receive each posting individually, reply to this email editing out the word "DIGEST" from the subject line.
Come help us discover our Kersey roots!
Hope to hear from you soon on the list,
Marv

Does your web page have information about the Kersey family? If so, you can link together with other Kersey researchers by joining the Kersey Family Web Ring.
What's a Web Ring? It's simply a way to connect together web pages with common interests. Each page in the ring has a "forward" link and a "backward" link to other pages in the ring. Anyone who finds one site on the ring can then follow the links to find the other sites.
Why join a Web Ring? When web surfers find your page they will automatically find others with similar interests. More importantly for you in this case, when they find other Kersey pages they will also find YOU! Most important of all, you will get a way cool Kersey logo for your web page ;-) You can visit my page at
http://www.halcyon.com/millerm to see what it will look like.
What do you have to do to join? Just two things. First add the code fragment listed below to your web page. Second, visit the following web site and fill out the form to add yourself to the ring:
http://www.halcyon.com/millerm/ring/ring.htm
Here is the code fragment to add to your web page source:

8. DAVID DANIEL, son of Humphrey and Nancy (Pratt) Richardson, was born March 27, 1826. He went to Illinois with his parents in 1845 and for some time was employed as a driver of one of the big four-horse coaches that ran between Chicago and other large towns. He married first, Jane Shaw, at Marengo, Ill., July 3, 1848. Soon after this he went over the plains to California, but soon returned for his family and permanently settled there. He probably lived first in Sacramento, and is said to have been a superintendent of one of the overland stage lines. After this he became a farmer and resided near Chico, where his wife died Feb. 19, 1886. He married second, Mrs. Harriet Emeline Kersey. He died Sept. 9. 1904. The following quotation is taken from his obituary notice in the Record: "Death has claimed another pioneer of Butte County in the person of D. D. Richardson, who died yesterday at his home a few miles north of Chico. As noted in yesterday's Record, Mr. Richardson was stricken with paralysis and from the first but little hone was entertained of his recovery. * * *
Deceased was one of the oldest residents of the vicinity of Chico, where he had engaged in farming for many years and where he had reared his family. * * * He was a good citizen and respected man, and his passing marked the end of a long and useful life."

MADISON TOWNSHIP
Madison Township lies north of Jackson, west of Marion, south of Johnson and east of the Cedar County line. It is eleven miles long and six miles wide, containing an area of 66 square miles. Population in 1870- 1,361; estimated at present to be 1,550. It is the second township in taxable wealth, fourth in extent and fifth in population. It is well timbered and has but little
prairie. Soil is generally good and produces well. Little Sac, Brush and Bear
Creeks are the principle streams. Considerable interest is manifested in
public schools and the spirit of popular education is steadily increasing;
contains ten school houses, several churches, one steam and two water mills, and one post office. The old town of New Market laid out by Wm. Campbell once had an active trade, but the building of the town of Orleans near by so deprived it of its trade that it soon went down and is not now known on the map of the county. The first settlers were S. H. Bunch, Ransom Cates, Abnor Renfrow, Peter Ruyle, Wm. Campbell, John Hunt, James Stockton, Robert Evans, Henry and James Akard, Jacob Seigler, Joseph Ferguson, Silas Fox, John Crain, James Watson, Ahab Bowen, James Hopkins, Benj. Craighead, Francis, William and Matthew Dunnegan, William Webb, Drury Kersey, Alfred Frieze, and David Rountree. In 1857 there was, but one school house which was used for both church and school purposes.

William Jasper's first wife was, Mary Melinda Folmer, ( Alabama ) second wife
was Elizabeth King, Didn't know about the third wife, but it's quite possible
Had lots of kids by both women. I have a picture of him with Elizabeth.
William Jasper died June 11, 1913. He is buried in Red Oak Cemetery , in Red

HKearsey@aol.comSubject: Kersey - Highwaymen
I had an interesting meeting the other day at our Stroud Family History
Society. A new member, Pat PINNELL, was showing us her family history and I
suddenly saw a poster I recognised!!! It gave the account of the hanging of
two highwaymen.
In 1828 her ancestor, Matthew PINNELL with his brother Henry, were Highwayman who held up and robbed by great great grandfathers cousin, James KEARSEY, just a few miles from where I live here in Gloucestershire. James was a farmer, just returning from market. The Highwaymen were tracked down by local police after a 50 mile chase and tried and then hung at Gloucester. The Gloucester Newspaper gave a full account of the trial. Apparently Highwaymen did say "Stand and Deliver!".
After the brothers were hung, their families had a very hard time, but
survived.
Pat it suggesting that we and a descendant of James, meet for a meal at the Public House, called "Trouble House" where the robbery was planned, and then she will show us exactly where the event took place.
Can you beat that for a KE(A)RSEY family history story! The full account follows.
Hugh Kearsey
This morning, Saturday- Matthew PINNELL aged 36, and Henry PINNELL 28 (brothers) suffered the extreme penalty of the law at Gloucester. They were indicted for feloniously assaulting Mr. J. KEARSEY, on the King's Highway, in the parish of Rodmarton, on the 17th Dec. last, and stealing from his person his watch and pocket-book containing £60 in notes, a quantity of silver, and a key. Mr. Phillpot stated the case which was clearly proved by the following evidence.
J. KEARSEY, a farmer residing at Rodmarton said,"I left Tetbury market about 8
o'clock in the evening of the 17th. I was sober. After turning towards
Rodmarton about a quarter of a mile from the turnpike road, two men moved
towards me; the tall man crossed my horse's head and took the bridle with his
right hand. The short man struck me on the head with a stick. After I had
received many other blows on my head, arms and hands, I fell off my horse; the
stick h
ved many
blows, said 'Stand and deliver'. While on the ground the short man beat me on
the head with the same stick. I got to my legs and begged him not to murder me
as I had a wife and a large family. The tall man said 'I wont murder you if
you give us what you have quietly- if not, here is this for you', showing me
the muzzle of a small gun or large pistol. I unbuttoned my topcoat, and the
short man took my watch from my fob, my pocket-book from my side pocket
containing four £5 notes of the Tetbury Bank, forty notes of £1 and some
memorandums. The tall man took some silver and a key. They then ran away. It
was a very moon-light night. I had the opportunity of seeing the persons. The
prisoners at the bar are the men. I had seen them before". Charles Warner-
surgeon of Cirencester.
"I was sent for on the 17th Dec. last to attend Mr. Kearsey.
He had three of four severe wounds on his head, apparently inflicted by a
stick or blunt instrument".
Henry Tilling
"I live at Jackaments Inn about 5 miles from Tetbury. There is a
public house called 'Trouble House' about 3 miles nearer Tetbury. The road for
Rodmarton branches off between them. I saw the prisoners on the 17th Dec. at
Jackaments in the morning. They went towards Trouble House".
Robert Bruton
"I am a constable of Salisbury. I searched Henry Pinnell and
found the silver, gold, and notes which I now produce, £7.16s.6d, £4 in gold,
£12 in notes, and a pocket book."
Mr. Kearsey identified the watch. His Lordship then proceeded to
sum up and the jury instantly returned a verdict of guilty. The usual
proclaimation was then made and the learned judge having put on the fatal
emblem of their doom addressed the prisoners in the very impressive language,
and exhorting them not to entertain any hope of mercy on this side of the
grave, passed sentence of death on them.
This morning the two unfortunate men attended divine service in the chapel of the goal, they listened attentively to the pious exhortations of the R s to be the perpetrators of the crime for which they were about to suffer. They were afterwards pinioned and led to the place of death, where after the necessary preparations being completed, the drop fell, and the scene of this life closed on them.

Hi Marv:
Thus far, I have only located three marriage licenses with referances to the Kersey name. I do have a copy of the marriage record between David B. Kersey and Sarah F. J. Whitenton. Also among the Whitenton marriage documents if found a Wm. E. Kersey, an ordianed Minister who performed the marriages between William Noll & Lucy A. Whitenton in Goliad Co., Texas May 2, 1871; and between Mr. E. A. Evers and Miss Martha E. Whitenton on December 26, 1870. The last one was witnessed by David Whitenton and W. I. Adcock.
Martha E. Whitenton, Sarah F. J. Whitenton and David Whitenton are children of Gibson Whitenton. The Adock also married into this part of the Whitenton family. Lucy A. Whitenton is apparently the daughter of Gibson Whitenton (my ggg grandfather).
I know I have a little more information on this line of the Whitenton family and perhaps David B. Kersey, also. I will continue to go through my records and find what I can.
I have these extra copies of the marriage records and would be most happy to snail mail them to you, if you wish to share your address.

University of Arkansas, Fayetteville: HUGHES-McDONALD
THE HUGHES-McDONALD FAMILY
Moses Hughes, (ca 1797-1865) was a farmer, Methodist lay preacher, and sometime Justice of the Peace from Camp Creek, Ten nessee. He married Lucinda Chapman, (1805-?), and the couple moved to Greenville, Wayne County, Missouri, sometime in the early 1820s. Among the children born to Moses and Lucinda were Polly Ann, James, William, George, Rebecca,
and Martha, all of whom moved with their parents to Franklin County, Arkansas, around 1845. Polly Ann married Allen McDonald, a Sebastian County farmer, and settled near the town of Charleston, Arkansas.
They had at least one child at their home in addition to Allen's son from a previous marriage, Jerry H., and his stepson, Samuel C. Howell. James Hughes maintained his own house and land near his father's at Ozark, Arkansas, until he died in April, 1848, during a trip back to Greenville, Missouri. William R. Hughes also established his own home and became a preacher for the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1856. George Hughes served in the Union Army during the Civil War as a private in the Second Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry. Rebecca Hughes married a man named Kersey and settled near the town of Greenwood, Arkansas.

Marv, I noticed all the great information you sent this morning.
The Hughes family was especially of interest. The Rebecca Hughes
you mentioned was m. to William M. Kersey b. 1832 in Jackson Co AL,
d. 1865. William was the son of my GG Grandparents George Madison
Kersey and Elizabeth Gilliam.
William's brother Arthur L. Kersey was my G Grandfather. Maybe
somehow I can get some clues from the info on the Hughes family to
help find the parents of my Geo. M. Kersey.
Surely appreciate all the information you put in your letters

haven't had any trouble so far with mime; but there are times when AOL is
sluggish, like tonite.
My ancestor who had the middle name Kersey was of a Quaker family, surname Hoar, and he married into the famous Irwin family (or prolific, anyway). I suppose I can try to condense some of these details in my introductory e-mail on your list.
Thank you for your service. Good luck to you!
