Hi folks--

>From time to time on the list we have had problems with garbled messages, sometimes refered to as "gobbledygoop". This problem has occured with file attachments and the GET function. Unfortunately, the new list software may actually make the problem worse particularly for those of you on AOL. However, thanks to Hugh, it looks like there is a solution. There is a program called Wincode which can make sense out of gobbledygoop! It is available at the following website:

http://www.members.global2000.net/snappy/wincode.html

If you find the program somewhere else, make sure that it is version 2.7.3 or newer. Earlier versions do not work on the files from the new list software.

All you need to do is download the program and install it. If you get a gobbledygoop file, save it. Then run Wincode and give it the saved file name. It will decode the file to something usable. By the way, this should also work on the .jpg images files that some of you were having trouble with.

I am expecting that the AOL subscribers to the digest will need to have this program. AOL does not decode large digest attachments. Instead you will receive a file called GET.MIM. Save the file. Just run Wincode, click File, click decode. The saved file will be in an AOL directory called Download, on the system I tested it was called C:\aol3a\download\GET.MIM. Select the file and click OK. Wincode will produce a file called Digestxx.txt in the same directory. You will be able to read that one.

Good luck. Let me know if you are having trouble with this. I will be happy to help.

Hi folks--

Digest 18 is now available. If you are a digest subscriber, your copy will come automatically. If you want a copy, but you are not a digest subscriber, simply reply to this email without editing the subject line. Previous digests, 01 through 17 are available by replying to this email. Simply edit the digits 18 to the number that you want. One digest request per email. Please read the mail about gobbledygoop and digests, particularly if you are an AOLien.

Hi Kersey searchers--

I have some new image files available. All were generously contributed by Doris Smith Norman of Spokane. The first one is the marriage certificate for David B. Kersey and Sarah Frances Jane Whitenton, 5 Jul 1870 in Goliad County, Texas. To get a copy, simply reply to this mail without editing the subject. To get any of the rest of these files, edit the file name part of the subject line to match the file name you want. You will need a .jpg or .tif viewer. You may also need Wincode or similar to decode the files. See the earlier mail today about gobbledygoop. WinZip will also decode the files.

dbkersey.tif

This is the same as the previous file but in .tif format. It is a larger file, but better quality. All of these files are fairly low quality images scanned from xerox copies.

wekersy1.jpg and wekersy1.tif

This is the marriage certificate for William Noll and Lucy A. Whitenton, 3 May 1871, Goliad Co., Texas. The ceremony was performed by W.E. Kersey.

wekersy2.jpg and wekersy2.tif

This is the marriage certificate for E.A. Evers and Martha E. Whitenton, 26 Dec 1870, Goliad Co., Texas. This ceremony was also performed by W. E. Kersey.

Hope you like them,

I honestly don't know, Marv. Did your Irwins originate in PA??

My ancestor, Mary I. Irwin, was b. in PA (Chester Co - or Lancaster Co) in 1807. She m. Jesse Kersey Hoar in 1829, moved to OH (Knox Co.) shortly thereafter, finally to IL. They became Methodists before leaving PA. Apparently the Irwins were originally Presbyterians, said to be Irish tho now appears they were Scotch-Irish. The Hoar family were Quakers, supposedly came over w/Wm Penn.

I know these people all moved around. One of my e-mail friends descends from IRVINS who originated in PA, moved to VA, thence KY, TX, etc. I don't know if we're related, either. She says in Scotland the name was IRVINE, then over here the E was dropped. Apparently those who went South kept it as IRVIN, those in the North became IRWIN (influence of PA Dutch?)

It would be easier if I knew the names of Mary's parents, as there is a guy in CA who has an index of Irwins numbering 85,000!! I'm most anxious to hear back from PA re Mary so I can get more info from him.

So, Marv - maybe there IS a connection somewhere! Thanks a lot.

Hi Sue--

I don't know where Ann Irwin was from, but her father-in-law was from Pennsylvania. Her husband Daniel was Quaker and a great many Quakers migrated from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in the 18th century. Her family could well have been part of that migration.

Another possibility for Jesse Kersey Hoar is that he was not related to the Kersey family, but rather named for Jesse Kersey, the famous Quaker minister mentioned in Edward Coates Sinker's mail.

Hi Edward--

Welcome to the group. There is no problem of repeating old material, and even if there were, it's no MY line, so it's OK. ;-)

This is fun. I have tons of questions for you. My information on this family comes from Laurence T. Kersey's unpublished genealogy of the Kersey family, "The Kerseys, About Three Centuries of Genealogy and Reminiscence", 1943, clearly a secondary source. I would be grateful for your source information for comparison. I have Elizabeth Coates who married Jesse Kersey as the daughter of Moses Coates and Mary Vickers. Does that match your data? Is this Moses the son of Moses Coates and Susanna Weldon? I have William Kersey's wife as Hannah Bennett, daughter of Joseph Bennett and Rebecca Fincher. Are Charity and Ezra Cope siblings? I have Esther Kersey b. 3 Sep 1815 as dying in 1818?!

I'm guessing that we have lots more information to trade. My Kersey data is on my web page. The first few chapters of L.T. Kersey's book are available via "Kersey:CMD:GET ltkxx.txt" (without the quotes, xx=01 through 11).

Hope to hear more from you soon,

I have been thrashing around for about ten years on my Kersey puzzle, but

have had no success in learning who Cader's parents were. One more time:

Cader Kersey b. ca. 1810 GA, and Elizabeth -?- b. ca. 1812 GA (and I want to know who she is) m. ca. 1835. Cader apparently does not appear as head of household in a federal census until 1850, at age 40, in Wakulla County, FL, where he is listed with Elizabeth, age 38, and eight children, all b. GA: Louisa, Martha, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Elijah, David, and Amanda.

In the 1860 Wakulla County, FL, census, at the Fork of Ocklockoonee and Sopchoppy rivers: Cader Kersey, age 49, farmer, b. GA; Elisabeth -?-, age 45, b. GA, and six children, all b. GA: Sarah, Ann, Mary, David, Amandy, and George. I am descended from Ann, who married Francis Marion Vause. They were my great-great-grandparents.

Does anyone have a clue about Cader Kersey's parents, and about Elizabeth's maiden name? Thanks.

Hi Marv, you wrote:

My information is that Elizabeth Coates was the daughter of Moses Coates but was the daughter of Hannah Musgrave who was Moses first wife. Here are the details from "A Genealogy of Moses and Susanna Coates" by Truman Coates, M.D., 1906:

Moses Coates born 12mo 4 1745/6 Records of the Bradford MM,

Chester Co., PA., died 8mo 4 1815 East Caln, Chester Co., PA.

married 5mo 26 1790 Bradford MM records, Hannah, dau. of

Thomas and Hannah Musgrave. Thomas was an Irish Quaker

of Sadsbury Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. Moses Coates became

owner of a large tract of land, now occupied by the town of

Coatesville, Chester Co., PA. Hannah Musgrave was born

2mo 12 1752 died 4mo 5 1775 of a nervous fever and interred

on the 7th at East Caln F.B.G., where later Moses was laid.

Much of this information is confirmed by my copy of "Early Church Records of Chester County, Pennsylvania, vol. 1, Quaker Records of Bradford Monthly Meeting" by Martha Reamy, 1995.

>Is this Moses the son of Moses Coates and Susanna Weldon?

The Moses who married Hannah Musgrave is the son of Samuel Coates from whom I descend. Samuel is the son of Moses Coates and Susanna Weldon. I can give you more info on them if you want to go back that far with the Coates.

> I have William Kersey's wife as Hannah Bennett, daughter of >Joseph Bennett and Rebecca Fincher.

Thank you for that information. I did not have that. Any more

details would be welcome.

> Are Charity and Ezra Cope siblings?

The Coates book spells the name as Cope but the Bradford MM

book spells it Coope. They are not siblings. Charity is the

daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Coope of East Bradford, PA

and Ezra is probably the son of Nathan Coope and Eamy Bane

but I know he is not Charity's brother as I have all of them listed

in the Bradford MM book.

> I have Esther Kersey b. 3 Sep 1815 as dying in 1818?!

Yes, there is a bit of confusion here. The Coates book has her

as dying on 3mo 4 1818 but goes on to say that she married

Joseph H. Painter. There are many errors in the Coates book

and this is one of them. I do see in my Bradford MM book that

there was an Esther ______ m. Mordecai Hayes b. 7mo 19 1780

d. 9mo 3 1847. She d. 3mo 1 1868 at Joseph H. Painters in

Fairfax Co., VA (Hicksite records). So if there is anyone who

can sort this out I would appreciate it. It could be a question

for the Quaker Roots list.

Thanks for asking questions. It makes me look more closely as my data.

Hi Caroline--

Thanks for the query. From time to time on the list we have discussed a great many variant spellings for the name Kersey. Coursey was one of them. Others were Kearsey, Kiersey, Keirsey, Carsaye, Curzi, Kirsey, Kursey, Kersy, ... I'm sure that the group would like to hear your Coursey connections and try to find linkages to other spellings.

Hope to hear from you soon on the list,

He married Margaret "Peggy" McNair in Robeson Co. in 1825. They moved to

Georgia about 1830 and settled in Lee Co. My gggrandfather was Amos M.

Kersey born in North Carolina. He married Sabrina Hall and moved to Worth Co.

Ga. I believe Alfred L. Kersey is tied to James Kersey but I haven't been

able to tie this in yet.

I would love to share my Ga. info with you and would appreciate any help you can give me.

Subject: RE: Lucretia J. Kersey & John

Hi folks--

Regarding Lucretia and John Kersey, we seem to have four pieces of information as shown below. The John Kersey listed in the DAR book (3) certainly seems to be the same as the first John Kersey buried in Beck Cemetery, Lebanon Indiana (2(a)) and the same as the John Kersey in my data(4), but not the same as the John in the Boone Co. wills who did not die until 1860(1). The John Kersey in the will (1) seems to match nicely with the second John in the cemetery data (2(b)).

Now which Lucretia was born in 1814 and died in 1840? We know her husband's name was John Kersey.

There are at least three candidates:

Lucretia the wife of John 2a,3,4 - in which case my dates for her are wrong and she is not the mother of the listed children for this John.

Lucretia the wife of John 2b - we don't know that this John had a wife named Lucretia, but he could have.

Lucretia J. the daughter of John 2b - John 2b is just old enough to have had a daughter born in 1814 and she could have married yet another John Kersey.

Does anyone have a further information to clarify this mess?

Marv,

I am going to list the K's of the Chicksaw Indians. I guess as proof that the

Kersey name exists there. Then too, it is not only my problem to figure it

out, and don't know how I got misguided into thinking that it was. Geneology

does strange things to one's mind!!!!

I would like to be able to solve this. I am getting more confused everyday

with this indian thing, and the tribes involved . If the Kersey's were indian

why did they fight in the indian wars. If they were Black Indians---why did

they fight in the Civil War? I have the Civil War papers.

The K Surname section listed: KEEL, KEEP, KELLY, KEMP, KENNEDY, AND

KERSEY. This came from the Black Chicksaw Freedman List.

Marv:

A J Kersey that was the husband of Eddie Mae Kersey of Appling County was the son of Victor Kersey and Mary Carter. A J lived in Baxley Ga. all his Life. He had several brothers and sisters. I do not know the names of them all but here are a few. Edgar Kersey he died in 1944 during the war. A sister Suda Lee, and Geraldine that died recently.

Victor Kerseys parents were Thomas Kersey and Susan Carter. He married Mary Carter December 30th 1916 in Jeff Davis County Ga.

Thomas Kersey and Susan Carter were married in Appling County Ga.November 10th 1873. I beleive that Susan parents were George and Mary Carter. Thomas family was John A. and Priscilla Kersey.

This Kersey family married into the Carter family quite frequently I have found out.

I am still loking for connection to some other Kersey family out there some were.

I have death certificates for several people that reads that these people were buried in a KERSEY CEMENTARY near Graham Ga. Does any know of this cementary? If you do please contact me.

Subject: Kersey: Other Surnames Used

Marv, I noticed you had some other surnames used by Kerseys in

one of your notes.

Besides those, there is also Casey, Caisey and Causey. After

looking for the longest time for my George M. Kersey I discovered

he also was listed by Casey and one time Caisey. It seems that there

were many who did use the different surname interchangeably.

Strictly by accident I found that out. I still haven't found his

family, but I am looking at the variant spelling now. So, some on

the Kersey List might keep that in mind when they are looking for

their families. If anyone on the list finds a spare Geo M.

Kersey/Casey let me know.
