Date: Mon, 20 Apr 1998 19:47:48 EDT From: BUFFUM2 <BUFFUM2@aol.com> Subject: Re: William H. Kersey Dear Troy, I have the Confederate Papers of Benjamin Franklin Kersey ( Stephen A. Kersey's son, and my Great Grandfather ) Also for William Jasper Kersey ( Ben's brother )Ben was in the 56th Alabama Cavalry Regiment, Company E, Partisan Rangers. He was captured in Greensboro, SC along with 150 others, on April 26, 1865. He was released from the Union Prison May 16, 1865, and returned home to Alabama. William Jasper is listed on the Confederate Honor Roll. He served with the 46th Alabama Infantry, and was in the Battle of Champion Hill, and at Baker Creek Mississippi. He is buried in Red Oak Cemetery, Red Oaks , Alabama, Near Andalusia, Alabama. Benjamin is buried in his own cemetery at Gulf Breeze, Fl. My Stephen is listed on the 1850 Alabama Census, also the 1860, and 1870. After that he went to South Florida. He was a Physician, and was headed to the Seminole Nation to help out during the Yellow Fever Epidemic. As you know the 1890 Census was destroyed. I can only go on family stories as to where he was in Florida. His wife Mary was killed when the wagon they were riding in overturned. She is buried near the Manatee River, Hillsborough County. Some of Stephen's children showed up on the 1900 Census. One of them was Pocahontas Emma Kersey. She married A David Thompson. I correspond with Pocahontas's Granddaughter. She tells the same stories that I have heard about our side of the Kersey's. I only met her a few years ago. We heard that we were of the Cherokee Tribe also, but can't find any documentaion on that. Our Stephen was supposed to have been adopted by a white man and educated to be a doctor. That part is true. The rest we can't really document. Our two Stephens could be cousins? Hope this has help clear up some of your questions. Regards, Doris Buffum
