His father I think was Wiley Kersey, or could be Wesley Anderson Kersey. (All from Tenneessee ) John Anderson Kersey was married twice; don't know name of first wife, they had two children Eliza, and Maud. Their mother died. John then married Roena Griffin, (not sure on spelling) daughter of Jim and Louise Griffin/Griffen all from TN. John and Roena had three children Alma, William, and Ossie. It is believed that first and second wife may have been cousins. If you have and information please share. Thank you.-Roy Kersey, 210 S. Crestview Dr., Paducah, KY 42003. Previously on this list we had identified Thomas Kersey who married Elizabeth Hinton as being the son of John Kersey and Lucretia Hutcherson. John and Lucretia were also listed as having children Elizabeth, John, and Benjamin. They look like really good candidates to be the spouses of James, Jane, and Martha Hinton respectively. We did turn up quite a few, with no luck. The person's ancestors once lived near the Lumbee Indians in what is now Robeson Co NC. and that the Lumbees share with the Roanoke Island Colonists many surnames which do not appear otherwise in early NC records. Also there are pecularities in their English which suggests an Elizabethan connection. Very probable that they are indeed descended from those first English colonists. Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 21:00:34 EDT From: BUFFUM2 <BUFFUM2@aol.com> Subject: Re: Kersey List: Lumbee Indians Barbara, I am wondering if maybe we are from the same line? The William listed could be my Steven's father, or grandfather. They are certainly from the same area. Steven was born in South Carolina ( according to the Census ). He could have possibly been born in NC. Steven named his first child William Jasper. I have told this before, but will do it again, maybe someone can help. The family story is: Steven was indian, and adopted by a white man, who educated him to be a doctor. The doctor part is true. The story came from two different sources of Kersey family. Neither of them knew each other until the last few years. Does anyone know where we might obtain the Surname List of the Colonist that Sir Walter Raleigh brought to North Carolina in 1587. These colonist intermarried with the indians of the area ( later known as the Robeson County, Indians. ) The Lumbee name didn't come about until the 1950's. Everytime that I would see the Kersey name listed on an Indian Roll, I would go in that direction, thinking that " alright I'm on the right track". From what I have read in the past couple of days, I really believe that for the first time that I MIGHT really be on the right track. Most of the Kersey's that I know, or have known, all have indian features. All of them bring up the Indian Ancestory. No one knows anything of value or proof to the matter. I won't write anything in my geneology, unless I have absolute proof. I keep it all in my notes, which makes some of the family mad. They don't like it when I want proof. I am going to really celebrate, if and when I solve this Kersey mystery!!!!! Regards Doris Buffum

I guess the only excuse is : I've consentrated so hard on the wrong things, that I can't see the Forrest for the Trees. I've had my mind and face in the computer so much that it must have sucked out part of my senses or brain. How can one be so stupid, that they can't see what's there? I really need what you have on the Kersey's of Roberson County. They are mine and Jana's family also. I know it in the Digests. To keep down confusion would you please e-mail it to me. If you don't want to send it through the Kersey list, please send it through aol. I am still waiting for you visit . I have a whole room full to share! I got you confused with another person on the List. Blame it on the pain that I've been in, before and after surgery. I told Janas that the pills made me see little green men in pink suits. Thank God the pills are gone, and my brain cleared up!!!!! Sorry Cuz, Doris

I really believe for the first time that I am about to tie up my indian heritage. This has been very confusing, mind boggling, and expensive. There are other Kersey's listed among other tribes, but I really think that I am on the right track this time. The Lumbee's are the decendants of intermarriages of the Croatan ( Hatteras ) Indians and the Colonist left on Roanoke Island, NC in 1587 by Sir Walter Raleigh. They had an agreement with the Governor John White, to leave directions to where they had moved, if they moved while he went to England for supplies. He didn't return for three years, By that time the colonist had moved inland 100 miles and had intermarried with the indians.. They did carve directions in a tree. One Census tells of a band of mixed blood indians in Robeson County, 1730. They were mostly educated and could read and write. They had grey eyes! Thanks for your help, Guess there is unity in numbers. Doris

The little bit of information I gave you came from a fellow on NCROOTS-L. Along with it he wrote all about the Colonists, Sir Walter Raleigh, etc. Was most interesting. I printed it out, but didn't save it to my files. There's 14 pages of it. Give me a day or so and I'll check and see if he would resend it. If not I can copy and send by snail mail. Margaret being aged 46. On a manual search of KERSEY's in 1881, I can't find Margaret. I must put the 1881 data in a data base like the Births, Marriages and Deaths! Then I could search more thoroughly. Do you know your GGGrandfather's name? This would help to trace the marriage. To all other KERSEYs and KEARSEYs, I still read most of the list mail, but get put off when they start by quoting a long message first. We have to pay for our phone calls in England!!! Hugh Kearsey

#48. Kersey: Editing long messages - from Marv Miller
Top
Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 10:30:07 -0700 From: Marv Miller <millerm@halcyon.com> Subject: Kersey: Editing long messages Hi folks-- Some of you have asked for information on how to edit the message you are answering so as not to clutter the list. I'll try to explain. The details will vary depending on your computer operating system, mail program, etc. But in general, when you reply to an email, the original message appears in the same text window where you type your reply. You can edit that original message text just as if you had typed it yourself. Often there are big blocks of it that you don't need, so you can select and delete them. Most Windows programs let you do that by positioning the edit cursor then holding down the left mouse button and moving the cursor to highlight the text you don't want. Once the offending text is highlighted, there should be a delete function available -- either a delete key, an option off the right mouse button, or an edit menu selection. For AOLiens: the original message text won't appear in your reply unless you select it before you click on the reply button. You can limit your selection before replying or edit it after hitting reply. If this still isn't clear, please let me know and I will try to explain some more. Hope this helps, Marv millerm@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/millerm
