A while back I almost quit sending anything to the Kersey list, because someone was complaining about the deadwood in our messages. Then I read where someone was complaining that hardly anyone was using the Kersey List , and e- mailing each other individually. I am guilty of that ! I didn't think anyone was interested in my line! Now after having read where someone else thinks that we should share our lineage, I began to revisit the Kersey List, and have learned for one thing where my gggrandfather's family started. I do enjoy the fact that there are other people researching one of my Surnames, but I really don't know how respond . If someone e-mails me and it doesn't pertain to a certain fact, what should I do? Not answer on the Kersey List, e-mail them personally ? I'm not being ugly about this, I have a college education, I just don't understand how to respond to this list.! Do we just break it down to dates, and facts, and leave out the familiarities ? Thanks, and no insult intended, Doris Buffum

---------- From: PATRICIA A HENRY[SMTP:EFPV77B@prodigy.com] Sent: Friday, May 15, 1998 5:00 PM To: millerm@halcyon.com Subject: Internet Message Troy, I too am wondering about the JAMES KERSEY in the 1830 AL census. Peggy Winkel, another cousin in OK (Martha Kersey Ford) and myself, as you probably know are still trying to find the parents etc of George Madison Kersey. You may already have this information, but I'll mention again. Our George Kersey was also in Jackson Co AL in the 1830 census. He used the surname Casey (which is common in a lot of Kersey families I've found), so he is listed as George M. Casey there. In the 1840 Jackson Co AL census he is listed as Kersey--- only the census taker wrote it as Kerzey or Kerzley. What is interesting though is that there was also a Pleasant Kersey Jackson Co AL. He died 9 Nov 1827 and was also listed as Pleasant Casey. Our George purchased Pleasant's horse, saddle, and bridle on 8 Dec 1827. It seems as though the JAMES KERSEY, GEORGE, and PLEASANT should have a connection somehow. It would have helped if there was a 1820 census in Jackson Co but there is none. I haven't been able to find any more on PLEASANT or on the JAMES KERSEY. But I'd really like to find the connection if there is one. Pat Henry EFPV77B@prodigy.com

Top
Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 06:38:33 -0700 From: Marv Miller <millerm@halcyon.com> Subject: RE: Kersey RE: Long messages Hi folks-- Let me take another try at the question of long messages and appropriate content for the list. First of all just to put it in context, this is not a BIG ISSUE like world hunger or nuclear war ;-) There are really two slightly different items: 1. Genealogy content - anything that is genealogical in nature, e.g. names, dates, places, relationships, family history, etc. is more than welcome, it is encouraged. It is the reason we are here! This is sort of stuff that shouldn't be taken off line. Let everyone hear it, if it doesn't pertain to the lines we are researching, we can always delete it. 2. Long messages - a long message that contains all new genealogy material is still more than welcome. The problem comes when the long message consists of a repeat of a previous post with the addition at the bottom of a replay that says "Thanks" or similar. A good general rule might be that if you are replying to thank someone without adding to or commenting on the genealogy material, just send the thanks directly and not to the list. If you are commenting on a long message, try to edit it down to reduce size and make it clear which portions you are referencing. Again, none of this is a capital crime, there are no penalties. Just trying to keep things running smoothly. By the way I am still enjoying the heck out of this list, and I hope you are too. I want to thank everyone for all their contributions over the past year. When I look over the digests, it amazes me how much material has been discussed.
