John Kersey was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, on March 11,1764. FromPittsylvania County, he went west in 1779 to settle in that part of Virginia which, in 1762, was to become the state of Kentucky. In September of 1780, at Lexington Station, now the city of Lexington, Kentucky, Kersey enlisted in Col. Daniel Boone"s Virginia Regiment, serving in companies commanded by Capt. Robert Patterson and Capt. William McConnell, in campaigns against the Indian allies of the British. He was honorably discharged in November of 1782 after two years and two months of service as a private soldier. While a raesident of Nicholas County, Kentucky, and at the ripe old age of 75 years, Kersey was granted a veteran's pension by a grataeful government on May 2, 1832. His pension was transferred to Boone County on May 27, 1837, when he came here to live with his children who had previouly emigrated from Kentucky. In coming to this part of Indiana, John Kersey"s sons acquired large tract of land from the government and reared big families, of whom many decendants are still living in Boone County. The new gravestone, appropriately inscribed, augumented a weather-etched, time-eroded marble slab placed at the grave of the old soldier a hundred and twenty-two years ago bearing the now faded inscription, "John Kersey;, Died Dec. 9, 1852, Age 88 yrs. 8 mos. 23 day s." Asimilar slab nearby marks the grave of Kersey"s wife, Lucretia, who died July 19. 1840, at the age of seventy years. (from an article in Boone Magazine in the public library at Lebanon IN.) But I want to be able to share what little I have about my Kersey family to help those who are actively looking. Leander Kersey was my paternal ggrandfather. He was married to Hattie Munson Kersey. They had two sons that I know of - my grandfather Herbert, born 1867 and deceased 2/27/68. He had a brother Albert Kersey, who I don't recall ever meeting, nor does my mother remember meeting him. Albert, it is said, lived in Adams, NY. My grandfather was supposedly born in the hamlet of Petries Corners, NY, which is near Watertown, NY. My grandfather married Clara Gardner Kersey. They had three children: Seymour, Dora and my father, Harold. All are now deceased. All I know is that Leander came from somewhere in Pennsylvania, my mother thinks she remembers going there once, but she as yet has not remembered the name of the place. Maybe it will eventually come to her. She said Hattie Munsen Kersey traveled by train to my grandfather's home (which was Lycoming, NY) to stay with her son - she was ill with cancer. She died in a Utica, NY hospital. Herbert, my grfa, never talked about his family. Thus we have zero information. None of his children knew any more than what I just told you. I asked them before they died. Guess we're cousins! Hope that helps some.....Bonnie J. Kersey

It could have been a gathering of Civil War buffs in Georgia or Alabama, but this picnic took place more than 4000 miles below the Mason-Dixon line. Brazilian descendants of Confederate veterans who sought refuge in this tro~ ical nation 130 years ago gather four times a year to celebrate their Ameri- can roots. They are members of the Fraternidade Descendencia Americana, founded in 1954 to preserve ties to U.S. culture among an estimated 100,000 heirs of the original emigrants. The Confederate emigres were some 20,000 Southerners who preferred the Brazilian wilderness to life under Yan- kee rule after the Civil War. The expa- triates were called Confederados and their community was Vila Americana, or 'American Town." Today, Vila Amer- icana (pop. 200,000) is the only city in Brazil with a coat of arms that has a Confederate flag as its centerpiece. -Jack Epstein in The Christian Science Monitor Subj: Re: something to think about Date: 98-05-23 23:29:22 EDT From: rlew6897@interpath.com (Rob Lewis) Sender: NC-SC-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU (Genealogy discussion for the Carolinas.) A few days ago I came across the following url which I will share with you all. If you have lost a southern ancestor just after the war of northern agression, then you should look at this site and consider looking in other central american locations. I think that you will find <http://www.scv.org/Camp1653/> to be interesting and educational and it just might find that lost member of your family. Rob

Smith, an electronics technician from Carpentersville, ILL, has spent 18 years searching for his gr grandfather's grave who died in the Second Battle of Manassas. In the National Archives he found a list - misfiled - in a box of those who had died in Warrenton from this Battle. He checked out 520 of the 600 names ( from 10 states ) and sent all his information to the Warrenton Public Library with a note that the town officals should use it as they wished. Does anyone know if this information is or will be put online? There's an awful lot of relatives who want to know about this. All owe him thanks for this. BTW, he's still looking for his gr gdf. Jeanette Martin Telfair Co.Ga eply-to: gators1@concentric.net (Mary Looney) To: NC-SC-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU OK, Jeanette! The following is a list (part 1) of the 520 heretofore unknown Confederate soldiers who died in the FIRST and SECOND Battles of Manassas. Coincidentally, a memorial naming ALL of them is being dedicated at the Warrenton, VA, cemetery TOMORROW! If I might be indulged just a moment, the Black Horse Chapter of the UDC took this project on and donations, to put it mildly have been lacking. So one of their members took out a PERSON loan of $140,000 to ensure that the monument would become a reality. Donations of ANY amount are welcome. Donations of $1,000 or more will be displayed on a special commemorative plaque alongside the Memorial Wall. If you find your ancestor's name in the lists to follow, PLEASE make out a check and send it to the monument fund at this address: To Name the Fallen P.O. Box 1006 Warrenton, VA 20188 It will be much appreciated.

I will print out the info that you sent me to add to my research. I met your father Harold and your Uncle Seymour when i was a child. I also remember your Great Grandfather Herbert, we used to go visit him when he lived in his trailer in Lycoming. He was a very nice man. I never got the chance to meet his wife, guess i was too young. So you're Harolds grand-daughter. What's your Mother and Fathers names? My Grandfather on my Mothers side was Albert Delbert Kersey who was married to Flossie Houghmaster in Constableville,N.Y. March 9, 1911 which was my Maternal Grandmother. They lived in the Adams,N.Y. area most of their married life. Grampa died in Adams at home March 1, 1963 and Gramma died in Watertown,N.Y. November 22,1977. Herbert is buried in Mannsville,N.Y. Cemetery not far from my original home Pierrepont Manor. My Dad Edwin Fletcher still lives there. My Mom Gladys Kersey Fletcher died of cancer July 3, 1981. So where do you live? Fill me in !! I have a newspaper clipping of Albert & Herberts Uncle and Aunt Mr. & Mrs. Herman A. Muncy celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary-Petries Corners-they were married March 6, 1895. Gramma kept this clipping from the Watertown Daily Times and it got passed on to me. Herb and Al had a sister Emma who was married to Bert Burnham and lived in Beaver Falls, N.Y. they got married March 1906. Albert is buried in Adams cemetery and i'm not sure where and when Emma died and was buried. I'll close for now and send more info as i dig into my book and paperwork. Thanks again-it's exciting for me to find a relative finally. I'll be waiting to hear from you. Do you have any other connections on the computer for our family ? if so let me know. bye for now, your cousin Nancy

Appreciate your interest. I've researched both the LouisaCo and Hanover Co VA. But no luck there. There were a lot of Kerseys in the 2 counties. In fact I got real excited when I discovered 2 George Kerseys. I thought maybe I had hit pay dirt, but they didn't work out. The one I'm still interested in is the William Kersey who married Agness Taylor. They were from Orange Co VA. He was listed in the Orange Co VA marriage records both as Kersey and also as Casey. But I haven't been able to get any information on him. If I didn't know better I'd swear my Kersey/Casey was from outerspace. Thanks for your help Pat Henry

I would still love to get a copy of that...I lost your e-mail address!! I am still searching for his wife's (Martha VAUGHAN KERSEY) burial site. I am also following a lead that my grandfather's (Lee Roy KERSEY) cousin name unknown was one of the troopers that was killed by Bonnie and Clyde in Oklahoma. I hope that can help me find B.F's sister...name unknown. Julie
