Date: Wed, 27 May 1998 19:29:45 -0500 (CDT) From: John Kaldowski <kaldowsk@comp.uark.edu> Subject: Kersey list. Hi., My name is Linda Kaldowski and I live in Fayetteville AR. Actually just south of Fayetteville about 8 miles. I am researching Rain(e)s but I have a Raines/ Kersey connection that I can't figure out. I do have Martha Keirsey Coopers Book and it does mention Parham Kersey and his group and Parham is somehow related to my Raines and he raised my g. grandfather John Lewis Raines in Falls CO. TX. The 1880 Falls CO. census shows John Raines in Parham Kersey's household and lists him as "son." John was given to Parham by his (John Raines)mother, Sarah Ann Mitchell Raines after her husband (John M. Raines) disappeared sometime between 1876 and 1880 from around Washington CO. TX. She also gave away 5 other children and I certainly don't know why because she soon married a man named Thomas Rayburn at Waco TX. and raised another family. She never went back for her children and they (the children)were separated for about 20 years before they began to find each other. Parham Kersey Jr. lived in Falls CO. TX. after the civil war but he was bn. Gibson CO. TN. His father was Parham Kersey Sr and his mother, Elizabeth Denton. This family was living in Gibson CO. TN. 1850-1860. I know there was some marrying among cousins and Martha Keirey Cooper's book says that Parham Jr. m. his cousin Mary Ann Masters. I am positive that this was his niece and not his cousin. She was the dau. of Parhams sister, Lousia Kersey, Sandlin, Masters. My Rains I believe are descendants of Stephen "Asa" Raines to his son Abel Raines who lived in Gibson and Perry counties in TN. Abel Raines also had a son named David bn. 1805 who seems to have dropped off the earth after 1850. In 1850 David Rains sold land on the Gibson/Madison Co. lines in TN. to James A. Cox. I am certain that the Cox, Keirsey, and Raines families are connected. I just don't know how. Can anyone help? Thanks, Linda

Since her father`s will was written in 1714 (probated 1718) and Mary`s b/d is about 1700, based on her two brothers and her sister Sidney`s b/d, she would have been abt 14 when she married. Concerning the Wilson or Nelson who is listed as age 18, the census that I have seen, does not list where he is born. My thinking is that if he was a son, he would be listed up there in the census with Melinda, who was also 18 years old. William is shown as age 26, and he was born in Tenn. according to the census.. If William is a brother of Isaac, do you know if anyone has the father to these two? Wilson or Nelson and William are listed as Kersey's. Any help would do in solving this for me. I would appreciate. As I have told you in the E-mail to you, I have ran across this quite often. One Kersey will move to an area, and then the family will follow, staying with the relative until they can get on thier own. The names you mentioned Lucinda, Melinda, John, Elizabeth, William, are all first names to my Kersey Line, but mine came from SC, Al, and FL. Most of them married cousins, or a relative of some kind. I think this is possible, because they all originated , at one time, from one family. Then they scattered all over, each naming a child after a relative. There are many many William's, John's, etc. The Kersey's have given me more headaches, than any family that I have researched. However, I am not going to let them whip me. I will hang in there until, I find the right one. I hate to see anyone give up. Some day we might all connect, unless my theory about the Space Aliens is correct Ha Ha. Hang in there, and we might all be calling each other cousin. Doris Buffum

I have attached condensed versions of the original postings below. Two Robert Kerseys, both born 1802 in Virginia, both married to Sarahs from South Carolina, and both ending up in Upson Co., Georgia. Lots of possible matches in the names of children but the dates don't seem to line up and there are other mismatches. The full postings are available in the digests on my web page. They had 10 children: Rube, Rebecca, Paradine, Lewely, Rance, Jesse Bell, Martha, Correne, Renzo, and a stillborn child. Jacobs father, my gg was John B. Kersey b.1823 in Edmon. Co. m to Elizabeth Meredith 2-24-1847 in Edmon.co. & their 7 children were: Jacob, Nancy, Alexander, Rhoda, Peter, Dinah (Diner) & Thomas. John B.s father, my ggg was John Kersey b. ?, married Elizabeth Bale in Green Co. Ky 5-9-1808 and their children were: Thomas, Harriet , Kate, Sophia, Rhoda, & John B. (think the B stood for Bales). I too have found many discrepancies in the information on the CD's. As you stated , humane error can be found in transcribing the paper info to CD"s. Then too after so many families have been recorded in one's Family Tree, Borderbund will ask you if you'd like to transfer your information to theirs. In doing that, if there are any errors on your family sheets, those will be transfered to the CD's causing false information, and confusion. It is well to double check! While we are on the subject of CD's, I received a warning from a Genealogy Computer Group that I belong to, Warning that some CD's are only lasting from 5 to 10 years and the decay , although it happens gradually, isn't evident until it's too late. Sometimes it's just a few lines being wiped out, and sometimes the whole original data is gone. The best bet for your genealogy is Properly stored acid-free paper, it has a much longer life than Digital Information. Just thought I'd share this. Doris Buffum

According to the VA 1860 Census, Harris Kersey , age 47, and Lucy , age 45, resided in Fredericks Hall, Western District, Louisa County . Their children listed were William ( Merle ), age 7 , and John, age 3 . They are not listed in the 1870 census for Louisa Co. Harris and Lucy were both born in Louisa County. Family stories: Harris was a Colonel in the Civil War. ( I doubt this as he would have been in his 50's .) The two children were orphaned while still young. They left the area and started wandering - some say in the Smoky Mountains - but eventually arrived in Huntington, WV where John found work. William , who was my gr. grandfather continued on to Ashland, KY where he found work as a waterboy for a construction crew. William stayed in this area , where I now live. John eventually moved to Morgan Co, KY where he left descendants , on to Cave City and Leitchfield , Ky where he left more descendants, and later to Southern Indiana . where he left still more descendants.
