Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 19:57:13 EDT From: JANASM@aol.com Subject: Kersey Fellow researchers, I ran across the following site today and it is really interesting..Journals were kept by the congressional meetings and these are some of those journals. When you get to the following page, scroll down to bottom and click search all collections and it will pop up a search screen. Type in Kersey only and this will bring 11 matches. In the Senate Executive Journals you will find information on William Kersey..there is a vice Kersey listed and I believe that was his rank at the time. The era was c1790-1800. Before the last journal he is a Major. The site name is Century of lawmaking for a new nation. There is also a letter from George Washington on the name match. I couldn't make out exactly what it said..maybe someone can. Doris is going to figure it out for me .:-) Good Luck and I hope this is one of the William's that you are searching for. http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/amlaw/lawhome.html Janas

I have never seen the name Ossie anywhere except the Kersey Family. of course there was the Indian Chief! William Jasper's daughter married Benjamin Franklin Miller. Oscey ( Ossie ) Randolph was his son also.Ocey married Laura Henley. There are more Oscey's but they are decendants of W.J. Kersey, that's why I need the birthdate of your Ossie. The contact is: Mrs. Margaret Morrison 20 Millway Drive Bishops Tachbrook LEAMINGTON SPA CV33 9SE U.K. If you let me have your address, I will pass it on. She says: "1 have been researching my mother's family name of Kersey/Kearsey/Keasey. 1 have managed to get back as far as my great x 4 grandfather Robert Kersey who married Ann Jackson at Arrow in 1779. They were married by licence and his address was given as Wigglesford (now Wixfbrd) but 1 have not been able to find any other reference to him either before or after this date. In the Arrow parish records when his son George was born, it states th at Ann Jackson was married to Robert Kersey'who had another wife', so presumably he was a bigamist. Although Ann apparently stayed in Arrow 1 cadt find where Robert went to (possibly prison or back to his other wife?). 1 wondered if he may have come to this area from Gloucestershire as there do appear to be quite a few Kersey/Kearsey etc in that county, but 1 have not been able to find any mention of a Robert Kersey in the Gloucestershire IGI records. There is no reference to the name in this area before 1779 that 1 can find." Hugh Kearsey

#18. Kersey: Upson County GA - from Graylwolfe@aol.com
Top
Date: Sun, 7 Jun 1998 09:02:49 EDT From: Graylwolfe@aol.com Subject: Kersey: Upson County GA Marv, I have made two connections to relatives of the Upson Co GA Kerseys. The following information came from The Early History of Upson County Georgia by Carolyn Walker Nottingham and Evelyn Hannah. It was published in 1930. This land was inhabited by Creek Indians before the white settlers came in 1824. The early settlers were God-fearing men. At that time , there were great forests and deep ravines where Upson County is today. Many of the settlers lived in a primitive way, and they were not rich people. Their homes were simple log structures. There were very few roads. There was an indian trail which later came to be called the Old Alabama Road. It went across the state of Georgia from Augusta to Columbus GA. This trail went through Upson County. The county started many cotton factories in its early days. There are still some cotton factories there today. The county was divided into Militia districts. The Kerseys lived in the 537 GA Militia District. Many early settlers got land through the Cherokee land lotteries. The book does not have any Kerseys listed in Upson County before 1850. There were no Kersey soldiers listed in the war of 1812. The Kerseys settled near the Old Alabama Road near the Flint River on The Double Bridges Road. This was the main way to cross the Flint River at an earlier time. There was one bridge that went from Talbot County GA to Owen Island in the middle of the Flint River. Another bridge went from Owen Island to Upson Co GA. Earlier, there had been a ferry across the river which was operated by an indian-half bred named Joe Marshall. Marshall lived on an indian reservation there, which was 1 mile square on either side of the river. This land is now closed to the public. There are hunting clubs on both sides of the river. The bridges are now gone. Here is a listing of early Kerseys from the book: J.W. Kersey was a marshal(chief of police) for the county in 1885. Issac Jersey was a private in GA Company D 13th Regiment during the Civil War. A.W. Kersey and J.P. Kersey were privates in the 3rd Regiment of the GA Reserves during the Civil War. A.W. Kersey is later listed on the pension list. Here is a listing of churches attended by Kerseys: Fellowship(Primitive) Baptist Church at the Hendricks Community(northwest part ) of Upson Co between 1887-1904: Arthur Kersey, R.F. Kersey, Julius Kersey, and Caroline Kersey. Bethel Methodist Church at the Hendricks Community: Julia Virginia Kersey( my great grandmother) and Sarah Kersey(wife of Robert Kersey) Hendricks Baptist Church had Frank Kersey as a pastor and R.F. Kersey as a church officer in 1904. Emmaus (Primitive) Baptist Church: William Kersey between 1842-1850 Hebron Congregational Church: Sarah Kersey(wife of Robert) was a founding member in1889. These are cemetery listings from the book: Hendricks Cemetery at Hendricks Baptist Church: Carrie F, Kersey born 1845 and died in 1821and Caroline Kersey 58 years old Friendship Church: Cora E. Kersey born 3/21/1882 and died 9/5/1916. Flint River (primitive )Baptist Cemetery at Roland: Henry Grady Kersey born 7/7/1883 and died 1/30/1901. He was the son of W.R.Kersey and F.H. Kersey. I am sorry for the length, but I hope this will help someone. Mary Wolfe Graylwolfe@aol.com
