Date: Mon, 22 Jun 1998 10:11:26 -0400 From: Bill Kersey <bkersey@uky.campus.mci.net> Subject: Kersey:CMD: Here is the genealogy information that goes along with the MacKersey, Wm Penn, and the three Kersey brothers info that I submitted earlier . I cannot vouch for the accuracy but I submit it in the hope that you will conduct your own research to verify this Kersey line if you are sufficiently interested. 1.0 John Kersey b. 1633 Came to the Colonies (from Scotland). Settled in Lancaster, Penn Colony in 1652. The group included Woolmans, Hunts, and Steddoms. 2.0 Son John Kersey m. Lois (Hunt ?) only child listed - William Kersey 2.0 William Kersey b. ? . m. Hannah Hunt 1749 .. went from Fairfax, VA to Guilford College, NC in 1758 to teach . children : Amos , b 1750; Jesse b. 1753 ; Daniel b. 1757 ; Eleazor b. 1762; Thomas b. 1759 . William was a Minister of Note among "Friends" but a former member of the Church of England. 3.0 Thomas Kersey b. 1759 ; m. Rebecca ( Elizabeth ?) Carter . Daniel Kersey b. 1757 ; m. Mary Carter Eleazor Kersey b. 1762 m. Rachel Carter All three Carter women were sisters. 4.0 Thomas Kersey and Rebecca moved to Oregonia, Warren County, Ohio in 1805. children - John Kersey , no other children listed . 5.0 John Kersey b. 1785 , d. 1869 m. Anna Steddom children - Thomas C., Lenora, Ellen, Jake, Cordella, Anna, Hodson, Joseph. 6.0 Thomas C. b. 1818 , m. Elizabeth Thompson Children. John B. Kersey b. 1861, d. 1941 Thomas was a physician in Warren County. note- I found a picture of Thomas in the library in Lebanon, Warrren CO, Oh. He appeared to be thin with bushy eyebrows and and a lot of hair. ( This describes some of my characteristics, as well as those of most of the men in my Kersey family ) but I do not claim any close relationship with Thomas. 7.0 John B. Kersey m Effie Zentmeyer children - Ralph Kersey , no other children listed. John B. was also a physician and lived in Warren Co, OH. The Woolman / Hunt family : 1.0 John Woolman b. 1635, d. 1718 , m.? Children - Samuel (Father of the famous Quaker minister John Woolman 0, Mary ,and four unnamed daughters. 2.0 Mary married William Hunt, Sr. Child Hannah Hunt , no other children listed. 3.0 Hannah Hunt, m. William Kersey (see above ). The Steddom Family : 1.0 John Steddom m. ? children Henry Steddom ; noother children listed. 2.0 Henry Stedom b.?, d. 1822 m. Martha Pearson children- Anna Steddom , no other children listed . 3.0 Anna Steddom , b.1788 d. 1844 m. John Kersey (see above ). This Steddom family left the Bush River Quaker settlement, which was 6 miles from Newberry, South Carolins, and moved to Warren Co, Ohio in 1804. The author notes that " the Steddoms and Kerseys frequently intermarried ". Was this in Bush River , SC or Warren Co, Ohio, or both ? Did one of the three Kersey brothers go to Bush River with the Steddoms ? My notes: Lebanon, Warren Co, Ohio is a pretty town with a famous inn, The Golden Lamb, a Quaker Museum , a library, and lots of antique stores. The Friends meeting house in the town of Waynesville was constructed in 1811 at a cost of $2,000 and replaced their earlier meeting house at Hicksite .The " Friends Grove Meeting House " was near Harveysburg ,the "United Brethren " was in Oreg onia - in Warren County, OH. Dr Thomas Kersey lived in Oregonia. Did John Kersey, the two other Kersey brothers , John Woolman, and John Steddom all come to Penn Colony together ? I do hope that our Kersey readers will find this information both useful and interesting. Billy R. "Bill" Kersey of Ashland, KY

It is an ancient material but is still in use. My Uncle , Virgil Kersey and his son , Allen Kersey, own a local business called " The City Auto Trim Shop ". They use a lot of "kerseycloth" in their line of work. It is a very durable material. I can find out the source of this material if any one is interested. Bill Kersey of Ashland, KY

Rowan Kersey was born in 1853 and is buried near Swainsboro Ga. He was married to Nancy Johns who was from Bullock County. We have lost him on the 1870 census but we believe he was in Bullock County as he was about 18 years old then. His father was Richard G. Kersey. He joined the Confederate Army on July 3,1861, Richard was at the surrender on April 9, 1865. After that we have lost him. We know he never got home from the war. We believe that he maybe died in a Union hospital. Rowan Kersey is my Greatgrand father. His son was William Griff Kersey. William was married to a lady who we don't know and they had one son, William Franklin Kersey Sr.. He later married Lillian Crews. And had seven or eight children. They are buried at Antioach Babtist Church in Swainsboro Ga. MY parents are also buried there along with several of thier other children. They are as follows: Sadie Kersey died at age 6, Hoke Kersey, Carrie Edwards, Gertie Allen, Roger Kersey who is my father. Some of the other children are Lacy Poole buried in Uvalde Ga. Jack Kirkland (female) buried in Fernindina Fla. There is one other daughter Maidalee. I don't know anything about her. Except that she died in 1967. We would really like to find out about the first wife of William Griff. I have cousins that are real close to my heart and they really do need to know. If anybody could help us with this we sure would appreciate it. We also have a family Reunion every year on the third Saturday in June at George L. Smith State Park. We all bring our campers and make a week of it. Some come the day of the dinner. It's really a wonderful experience. If anybody is interested they can contact my oldest brother, James Kersey at sib@clds.net He can give you all the details. Sincerely; Cathy Kersey Phipps

Date: Fri, 26 Jun 1998 00:52:21 EDT From: Graylwolfe@aol.com Subject: Kersey:ship passages Marv, Here is more complete information about the kersey ships which brought immigrants to this country. John Vendal kersey was the only Kersey to come at the time which he came in 1731.(no wife, children, brothers, sisters, etc.were mentioned) Here is the source book that the information was taken from. Strassburger, Ralph Beaver Pennsylvania German Pioneers: A Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727-1808 Edited by William John Hinke. Three Volumes, Pennsylvania German Society, 1934, p. 54 Volume 1 1727-1775 Volume 3 1785-1808. Thomas Kersey who went to Maryland in 1775. He also went alone. Here are the source books for him. Forthergill, Gerald Emigrants from England 1773-1776 Boston: New England Historical Society 1913 Reprint Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc. 1977 pp. 222-430 (Lancour 20, 20A) Tepper, Michael, editor Passengers to America; a Consolidation of Ship Passenger Lists from New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc. 1977 Reprinted with new indexes 1978. These two kerseys and the Thomas Kersey who went to Bermuda are the only Kerseys by name listed in the index out of thousands of names. There was nothing else close to Kersey except Kervey which might have been Kersey misspelled that was listed in the index. Questions to ponder. Are we all related in some way to these three? Are there other Kerseys who came who are not listed in the index? How did they come? >From where did they come? All you Kersys out there help me out. Surely someone knows the answers. Another source-" Thomas Kersey, clerk, of Norfolk to be disposed of for a number of years if not capable of paying the Captain for his passage " arrived from the Port of London in 1775. Comment : There is no reason that this list is all inclusive.- and no reason to doubt the arrival of John Kersey in Penn Colony in the 1600's.
