#7. Kersey The Rev. Jesse Kersey - from Bill Kersey

Date: Sat, 04 Jul 1998 15:46:50 -0400 From: Bill Kersey <bkersey@uky.campus.mci.net> Subject: Kersey The Rev. Jesse Kersey Subject : The Rev. Jesse Kersey Jesse Kersey of Chester Co, PA was a highly regarded Quaker . There is in the rare book section of the Virginia Historical Society a book " A Narrative of the Early Life, Travels and Gospel of Jesse Kersey ". Jesse is listed in the Census Counts for 1800, 1810, 1nd 1820 for Chester Co . " The Freindly Virginians " Pg 282 says " President Madison received Jesse Kersey, a Friend , of Chester Co, PA who came to speak for the slaves. The discussion concerned sending the slaves back to Africa or freeing them in the U.S. .In 1814, John Randolph confided to Jesse Kersey in Washington, DC that " I have been converted " . Quaker records will probably show that Jesse Kersey did visit many of the Quaker settlements. I presently have no further information about Jesse or his family. I hope that some Kersey researcher will will read the above mentioned book and let us know more about him . Bill Kersey of Ashland, KY

Date: Sun, 5 Jul 1998 06:43:31 -0700 From: Marv Miller <millerm@halcyon.com> Subject: RE: Kersey The Rev. Jesse Kersey Hi Bill-- Rev. Jesse Kersey (25 Aug 1768-26 Oct 1845) was the son of William Kersey and Hannah Bennett. I have his ancestry and descendants on my web page. Here are some notes about him. Hope this helps, Marv millerm@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/millerm Sources - Humphrey, John T., Pennsylvania Births Chester County 1682-1800 http://www.thehistorynet.com/AmericanHistory/articles/0495_text.htm Another area resident, Jesse Kersey, was inspired by the opening of the Lancaster Turnpike to develop a community on land owned by his father-in-law, Moses Coates that would attract residents and industry. He formed a partnership with Isaac Pennock in 1810 and together they purchased 110 acres of Coates's land. Pennock converted a saw mill on the property into an iron works, calling it the Brandywine Iron Works and Nail Factory after the pleasant river that ran alongside it and provided the water power that kept the machinery humming. By 1817 Isaac had become the sole proprietor of the business. http://www.ccconnect.com/coatesville/index.htm Coatesville's location along the Brandywine River in the midst of the Chester valley stimulated its growth and prosperity. The first settlement was an Indian Village which had grown as a trading center and as a market for the fur trapping industry. Records indicate land holdings as early as 1714 by William Fleming, a native of Greenock, Scotland. Another early resident was Peter Bazillion, Indian fur trader and merchant, whose accomplishments were recognized with a marker placed on Oak Street by the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission. In 1787, Moses Coates, a prosperous farmer and the area's first postmaster, purchased land which now comprises the center of town. Meanwhile, a few miles South, Isaac Pennock was formulating plans for his Federal Slitting Mill. The Mill, later known as Rokeby, was operating by 1793 and furnished the much needed iron products for the growing region. Then, in 1794, rural life in the valley changed with the completion of the Philadelphia to Lancaster Turnpike, now U.S. Route 30. It was America's first turnpike. Moses Coates' son-in-law, Jesse Kersey, a pottery trader and a Quaker missionary by vocation, conceived an idea to develop the area by selling frontage properties on the turnpike. Jesse formed a partnership with ironmaster Isaac Pennock and in 1810 purchased 110.5 acres of Coates' farm that laid along both sides of the Brandywine River. The farm's sawmill was converted to an iron works and named "Brandywine Iron Works and Nail Factory," the forerunner of Lukens, Inc. The village was "Coates Villa" and thus modern Coatesville and the longest operating steel mill in America were launched together. ---------- From: Edward Sinker[SMTP:sinker@globalnet.co.uk] Sent: Saturday, February 07, 1998 2:10 PM To: millerm@halcyon.com Subject: Kersey: Introduction Hi I will write a few words about myself and what I am doing on this list.
