#5. William Richard Kersey/GA KERSEYs - from GenLinda@aol.com

Date: Tue, 4 Aug 1998 14:59:51 EDT From: GenLinda@aol.com Subject: William Richard Kersey/GA KERSEYs Mary & Marv, Thanks so much to Mary Wolfe for the information she posted to the list regarding the descendants of Robert & Sarah Kersey. I would like to post the following information taken from the William Richard Kersey and Sarah "Sally" Hannah Turner Kersey family Bible. This Bible was in the possession of James Calhoun Kersey, their oldest son, at the time of his death, and then was passed-on to my mother in law, Dorothy Smallwood with whom he was living. I don't know if the marriage and birth references are in William's handwriting or Sally's; however most of the death records are in the hand of James Calhoun Kersey -- He had a beautiful script! Here's the info as it appears in the Bible: William Richard Kersey was married to Sarah Hannar Turner on December 22, 1857 Births: James Calhoun Kersey was born October the 17, 1858 Anna Ideller Kersey ws born Saturday, March the 2nd, 1861 William Monrow Kersey was born Monday, May the 30th, 1864 John Robert Kersey was born Tuesday, September 14, 1866 Mary Agnes Kersey was born Thursday, April the 27, 1868 Sarah Carrie Kersey was born Sunday, July the 3th, 1870 Lee Turner Kersey was born Friday, February the 28th, 1873 Ella Reane Kersey was born Thursday, September 23, 1875 Zella Kersey was born Thursday, September 23, 1875 Rosey Alice Kersey was born Sunday, September 21, 1879 Marriages: William Richard Kersey December 22nd 1857 Sarah Hannar Kersey December 22nd 1857 Annie Idellar September 30, 1880 James Calhoun to Mary E. Copeland April 18, 1886 Mary Agnes Kersey October 15, 1885 William Monrow Kersey Jan. 3rd 1887 Sarah Carrie Kersey Jan. 9, 1888 Zellar Teany Kersey March 15th, 1891 Deaths: William Richard Kersey died Feb. 19th, 1882 John Robert Kersey died Feb. 22nd 1884 William Monrow Kersey died October 19, 1891 Sarah Hannar Kersey died October 21st 1891 Mary Agnes Kersey died July 29, 1928 Also recorded in the Bible is the following information regarding Sarah "Sally" Hannar Turner Kersey's parents: Nancey was b. May the 10th 1810 James Turner died February the 17th `862 INote: They are buried in Padgett Creek Bapt. Church Cemetary in Newberry SC.) FROM "History of Arkansas" by Goodspeed: James C. Kersey, a prominent farmer of Big Creek Township, was born in Union county SC, October 17, 1858, but has been a resident of Philllips County, Arkansas since twelve years of age, attending the common schools of this county in youth and later entering the Arkansas Industrial University (now, University of Arkansas), Fayetteville, Arkansas. In April, 1886, he was married to Mary E. Copeland was was born in Texas May, 1860, the daughter of Elijah and Margaret (Hennison) Copeland, both natives of Alabama. They are the parents of one son, William R. Mr. Kersey owns a fine farm of 452 acres of land, of which about half is under cultivation. His principal crop is cotton. He is raising some 65 bales annually. In 1889, he erected a steam cotton gin at a cost of $1200 for his own use and htat of his neighbors. He has always voted the Democratic ticket and cast his first presidential ticket for W. S. Hancock. Mr. Kersey's father, William Kersey, was born in Upson County, GA about 1832 and died in Phillips Co. in 1882. (Actually, I think it's been proven that William was b. in SC). He was reared in Georgia and when a young man went to South Carolina, marrying in 1857, Miss Sarah H. Turner. He was a son of Robert Kersey, a native of South Carolina. Sarah H. Turner Kersey was born in that state in 1848 and is a sister of Nathaniel B. Turner, whose biography appears in this work. She is the mother of ten children, these still living: Anna J., the wife of Richard Davis, Monroe, Mary A. the wife of Thomas Hennison (actually Henderson in the marriage record) Carrie wife of Wiley Clatworthy, Lee, James C. the princiapl of his sketch, Ellen and Zeller (twins). In 1867 Mr. William Kersey moved to Arkansas and purchased the farm on which the subject of this sketch now lives. He was a member of the Masonic Order and of the Baptist church. Because of the aforementioned information, I feel that you would agree that William's full name was William Richard instead of William Robert Kersey. I was just passing along information that I have had for 20 years. I have found no connection to your F. H. ( B. F. ) . Kersey. The information that I have came from ( possibly ) some of your kin. It was compiled by Betty Alford, Rosie Raymond, after a visit with Ruby Lee Commons, daughters of Martha Kersey and Robert Vaughan. Please correct it. It is for your genealogy ! August 24, 1978 this information was sent to me. They do list a death certificate copy obtained July 1979 stating that B.F. Kersey died March 31, 1927 and was buried in Collinsville, Grayson County Texas, April 1, 1927. Another compiler Delores Alford of Abilene, Ks sent the exact same information. At the time I was looking For my B.F. Kersey, and thought that this one could possibley be mine, until I found him on the 1850 Pike Co. Al Census. Good Luck, and check with your family. I know good and well if someone said one of my Kersey's was a stingy man, I would probably laugh. I can write you a book on the stingy Kersey's that I have met . Doris

I really don't know very much about my Dad's side of the family and we never talked about it. I wasn't to ask questions about his Mom or Dad. All we knew was Aunt Hannah Thomas and her children. Here goes what I know. I pulled from LDS my grandpop and grandmoms marriage. Thomas I. Kersey and Sarah Ann Clark was married August 21, 1883 in Clay County, Fl. Also on census of Polk Co. Hespardies (Lake Wales) Polk Co. 1900 ED 131 Sheet 7 Line 91: Thomas Kersey Aug.1862, age38. Sarah Kersey Dec. 1855 age 44. son Henry Kersey Aug.1888. Then in prec. 13 " near Lake Wales" was my Uncle Samuel Thomas Nov. 1866 and Aunt Hannah Kersey Thomas Oct. 1884. Now on the Lastinger, my Dad was a cousin ?? to Florence Lastinger Albritton and I understand that the Kerseys were mixed in by marriage to the widow of Alfred Lastinger. He was Elijah Kersey. We could be in the Roddenberry family and I do know from talking with William (Bill) Kersey from the Kersey nursery on hwy 27 Lk. Wales that we are kin to the Sheffields. I know my Dad had cousins in Hardee and Manatee County. Jim Kersey and Mac Kersey. Be waiting to hear from you. Thanks so much, Ed Butcher and Almeta Kersey Butcher
