You listed my great grandfather which I knew was in the Civil War. But you also listed his brother which I didn't know was in the war. This is a big help to me and I am sure to others. Rose

He married Julia Elizabeth Baxter who was born in Canada 11 Nov 1844 and died in Newberg, Oregon in 1927. They had at least 2 sons, one being my Grandfather, James Andrew Kersey, II born 01 May 1882 in Iowa, died October 1960 in Newberg, Oregon. He married Martha Anna Peters in 1907 and they had 4 boys and 3 girls, one of which is my mother, Neva Elaine Kersey. My grandfather never talked about his family. Don't mind looking for someone. I have tried to post the names that I reconized. Example: Hannah Hunt , married to William. I knew that they belonged to someone on the list, but couldn't remember who. Then Marv posted his Kersey's and , " they are his " ! Okay, You asked for it, so will send info from the CD's as well as my own. Doris

I have this list from the Confederate Soldiers Book Have done look-ups , but never got the courage to sit long enough to Post the whole thing, especially to arrainge them by states. My cousin CJ belongs to the Sons Of The Confederacy and he has the Set of Books. I did send the list once by way of attachments, but no one acknowledged getting it, so most probably did something wrong ! I have the early marraiges from Florida will send it to the List. I sent it to someone on the List, but need to share it with everyone. that's what we all need to do ,SHARE. Even if we think no one would be interested that little bit of info just might solve something for someone. I don't see too many people on the List interacting. That's why I said, I don't want to monopolize the mail with my postings. Keep up the Postings Mary and thanks, Doris

Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 22:35:48 EDT From: PETENOEL@aol.com Subject: Kersey - stories Doris mentioned at one point that Kersey stories are fun to read. Here is one. My Grandfather's Sister, Lillian Kersey married a man named Bob Dunn and moved to Atlanta, Ga. The family was not exactly ecstatic over this marriage, afterall Mr Dunn was a junkyard dealer. They sung a different tune though a few years later when he latched onto an entire boxcar full of Epson Salts, sold it at a tremendous profit and became quite well to do. This would have happened sometime around the turn of the century.

If you order a book from the Jesse Stuart Foundation that will be thanks enough. Did you see the information that Calvin Walker sent to the Kersey Discussion group on 16 Aug. ? It has a lot of info on some Kersey families in West Virginia . Would you please notify vanlanham about this ? Our Boyd County Library has a 3 volume set " The 1787 Census of Virginia ". This is really the "Tithables" tax lists and seem to be more complete than the 1790 official census . List B , Louisa County, VA Tithables Tax List : Clayborn Kersey self WIlliam Waddy blank George Kersey self 1,3,4,1,8, George Kersey Jr self 0,0,0,1,0, John Kersey self 0,0,0,1,0, Thomas Kersey self 0,0,0,0,0, Thomas Kersey Jr self 1,0,0,1,2, first number No of white males above 16 and under 21 second blacks above 16 third blacks under 16 fourth horses, mares, colts, mules fifth cattle The above means that WIlliam Waddy was responsible for the Tithables tax on Clayborn Kersey. I assume that Clayborn was living in the house of Waddy at the time of this census - perhaps working for him. At any rate he was over 16 at the time. Obviously women were not taxed unless they were black. I found page 4 of the pages that I sent you earlier on the estate of Thomas Kersey . I will mail it to you. I thought that I had a good file system but I really goofed on these papers. Would you please forward this message to Becky ? Thanks .

What's to say that the person who copied it made a mistake. I have found many mistakes that have come from copied censuses. Example My ggggrandmother's name(not Kersey) was Margaret Lousia Marshall. When she married my gggrandfather Hancock, the court house recorded her name as Partial. Go figure that one. I checked the index which was the 1840 index of the GA census. There is a Banister Kersey listed in Lee Co. GA. Beside it is this 181(or 161 It is not clear) 811th district. I did not find him in the 1850 index. He appears again in the 1860 census in Randolph Co. GA. That is where he should be? It is spelled Bannister there. The 1870 census lists him in Cuthbert. It is spelled Banister there. Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 22:35:15 EDT From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Kersey Marve and Kersey Group, I have tried twice today to send my side of the Kersey House. Each time I have had a power outage. I was on the very last name and date when it happened again. I stomped around the room a few times. My husband came in and was amazed at the words coming out of my mouth !! I will try again tomorrow. _________________________________________________________________ I did find some information for Karl Schott. I hope the Web Site that I forwarded to him was a help. Also, I found a Neva Olline Kersey in Kansas . His parents were Paul Kersey and Carrie Strong. I believe he said his grandfather was Neva Elaine Kersey. Also an e-mail address for the Oregon Kersey's . these people are looking for decendants of James and Sarah Kersey 1867-1960/ Email : slcrow@cdsnet.net. Also Thomas and Jamie Kersey of Idaho and Oregon Home Page http://wwwprimenet.com/ ________________________________________________________________ the only thing that I could find for Sarah Laughter is that John A. Kersey was listed on the 1860 Ga Census. Dorcus is really spelled Dorcas she is listed on the 1850 Ga Census. Dorcas must be a common name among the Kerseys. Hang in there Sarah, we are all going to get busy and connect our lines. ( in my case ) If the electricity will stay on long enough. That's what a genealogy group is for, to help each other. RIGHT EVERYBODY ? Please send that picture for me to download. thanks Doris

I made a special trip to the Library to make sure It was Banister Kersey and that it was Lee County, GA. The information came from old notes that I had. When the question came up about no one knowing Bannister was in Lee County. I thought, " I should check it out, maybe I wrote it wrong." Maybe Bannister didn't live in Lee County, but he is listed as being there in the 1820 Georgia Census Index. It is a light blue book ! I don't have the page number, but can get it ! I think the real question is: How many Bannister Kersey's were there ? Doris

I, like you, found him in that blue book index for Lee county in 1820. There seems to be some confusion for the 1840 census whether Banister was in Lee County or Loundes (Lowndes) County. I'll be headed for the library this weekend to double check the microfilm on both census reports. Who knows, maybe we will find there were indeed two Banister's running around Georgia. Pete

They were : Sarah Kersey Upson , Georgia Comm. Number 10516 Office 542, Reprot No. 9, Year 1879 . She died before the claim was settled. Thomas Kersey Sebastian, Ar. Comm. No 8184 Report No.4 . Year 1874. He was alive when the claim was settled. Six years after the War, Congress created a channel through which pro-Union Southerners could apply for reimbursement of some losses. The Claims Commission was a three man board. Claims were to be accepted only IF the Claiment , Held American Citizenship, resided in a State that Seceded, Could document loyalty to the Federal Government through out the war, and had suffered Official Confiscation of Goods. Sarah was trying to be reimbursed for some live stock that the Union Soldiers took, plus her prize Boar, of which they readily killed and ate. Thomas wanted reimbursment for wheat, live stock, and other considerable goods, of which he had a piece of Union Script, signed by a Union Officer. _________________________________________________________________ These are the Kiersey Confederate Soliders. It is doubtful. !! Sherman used a Mansion in Georgia as a horse stable. That family tried to get reimbursment, but to no avail. A lot of family history was destroyed, when they burned the Court Houses. There was a guy in Atlanta that saved and hid some of the paper work of that town. After the war he later sold the papers back to the families. Most of the people in Ga hate that family even today. If you find more on Sarah, let us know. Doris

Does anyone know where George Kersey was in the 1770's? I love to solve mysteries but sometimes I hit the brick wall. Thanks Doris, I appreciate all the info you give us for "free" especially since genealogy is such an expensive undertaking. My husband can prove to me repeatedly that this is not a cheap hobby. If anyone does not want it, they can just hit the delete button and get on with their life. I try to always remember to be helpful to all and it gets repaid many times over. Most of us are amateur sleuths anyway and do not have the access to a lot of records without taking expensive trips to go to states where they are. Thank you over and over again. I hope I can repay you someday. Vi By the way-- if anyone has a relative who lived in Ohio, there is a site there that has a searchable database and I found some War of 1812 Davidsons there. It is www.ohiohistory.org/dindex.search.cfm and go to the searchable databases. A great help. millerm@halcyon.com wrote: > ++Kersey Family History and Genealogy Discussion List++ > > Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 01:45:56 EDT > From: LGKite@aol.com > Subject: Re: Kersey > > Doris.....Could this be the beginnings of finding my Alfred L Kersey born in > Robeson Co, NC?....This man's past is buried DEEP....Thanks for all the > different spellings...I was like you.....only thinking Kersey....If you come > across a Ninty Kersey, please let me know....Spelled any way will be OK!! > > Lynda....Macon > > Kersey Family History and Genealogy Discussion List > > To Unsubscribe: email millerm@halcyon.com > with SUBJECT = "Kersey:CMD:UNSUBSCRIBE" > without the quotes.

#60. Kersey: Variant Spellings - from PATRICIA A HENRY

Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 14:28:07, -0500 From: EFPV77B@prodigy.com (PATRICIA A HENRY) Subject: Kersey: Variant Spellings Not only has the name been spelled in various ways mentioned already there's a lot more spellings to look for. My GG Grandfather Geo M. Kersey's name was spelled Kerzey on one census and Kirsey on another census. In the War of 1812 pensioners he was listed as both Geo Kersey and Geo Casey. I found quite a number of Kerseys who used both Kersey and Casey. I've even seen Caisey used. Certainly doesn't make easy, does it? Pat
