Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 17:42:51 EDT From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Re: Kersey: Variant Spellings Marve & Group, I don't know why I was so stubborn about Stephen's name. It was there on the 1850 and 1870 Census as Kearsey. However on the Land Deeds it is spelled Kersey. Stephen was an educated man. He was a Physician. Surely he knew how to spell his name. I was going on the pretext that the Census Takers were spelling it wrong. So all of us have to re-think and revamp when we reach a dead end. Now I have another direction to go in. I was in a rut and digging it deeper. Am going to Post some Land Records on Kersey's. Hope someone gleens something from them. Doris

Banister Kersey in 1840 was in fact in Lee county and not in Lowndes County, Ga. Don't know how I messed that one up. A lesson to self, be more meticulous. ------------------------------------------------- To Hugh Kearsey..... Do you have any record of Elijy (Elijah, Elisha etc) Kersey, Kearsey born in England and migrating to the U.S. He was married to someone with the last name of Allen (we think). He had sons, Bannister, William, James and Joseph. Bannister was born in 1796 in Jefferson County, Ga. That is the only birth info I have. Appreciate any help you could give.....Pete

Besides it's good to refresh it every now and then. I am sure there will be others on the List that has it spelled different ways other than what I have listed. KEARSEY, KERRSEY, KEARSEEY, KERSE, KEARSE, KERCE. KEARCEY, KIERSEY, KERSAY, KEARSIE, KIERSAY, KAERSEY CAIRSEY, CARSEY, CURSEY, CURSIE I know there's more. Come gang, let's hear them ! I guess that everyone knows by now that the U.S Court rejected the Census Bureau Statistical Reports for 2000. We won't be around to see it, because it won't be released until 2070. Our descendents will, and I will want them to know that I had a name and was not a Statistic. The Census before 1850, is a nightmare trying to figure out who was who. If it wasn't for the U.S. Census, most of us wouldn't have the information to carry on our hobby, and find the family skeletons. Doris

Thefollowing are a few I've seen and some others have posted: Keirsey, Kiersey, Kearsey, Kasey, Kirsey, Kerzey, Keresey. I'm sure others may have come up with more. In my family my GG Grandfather Kersey also used Casey, Caisey. He was listed as both Kersey and Casey in the War of 1812. In reading I have seen the same person in one paragraph referred to as Keirsey, Kersey and sometimes Casey or Caisey. Sometimes I wonder if it wasn't pronounced differently depending on where the person lived-----the South, North, England etc. No wonder some of us are having a hard time finding our Kersey ancestors. That is my first dumb question, since I am going to ask the second without getting permission before asking it. HA In the Dawes Final Rolls, there are several sets of numbers. On the right had margin there are what I perceive as three sets of numbers. The first is 1 followed by a space and a series of numbers ranging from one digit to five digits. Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1998 22:32:18 EDT From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Re: Kersey FW: Dawes Final Rolls Marv, Kersey's and Bonnie, it's been a while since I've seen the Dawes Rolls. I will take a stab at it. The numbers to the right are your ancestors Card Number, Field Number, and what Tribe he belonged to. Some of the numbers are application numbers. There were a lot of intermarraiges, and some of the people had to apply for enrollment into a Tribe. Some of the numbers mean they are .mixed blood. I will give you an example from a Seminole Roll that I have. Seminole Nation Seminole Nation ( not including Freedmen) Card No. 326, Field No. 326. Year 1897 Dawes Roll Number 1107 Harjo Parhos 45, M Full Blood , Oksoke Harjo Band No 230. his father Fuscher Barcos ( Barkus ) ( Dead ) Okoske Harjo Band No 230. His mother is listed only as Kersey Number 1061 ( dead ) Okoske Harjo Band 230. his wife Dawes Roll No. 1108 Louisa Harjo, 38, Echoille Band No 191.. Her father Carchargi ( dead ) Echoille Band 191 . Her mother 1062 Nennie ( dead ) . His children were under the mothers tribe. The indians went by the mother's lineage. Echoille Band 191 1109 Cheparny Harjo son 11, 1110 Caesar Harjo son 7, 1111 Mary Anna daughter 5, 1112 Samcoche son 3, 1113 ( dead ) Milly 1. All listed as Full Blood. There is also a testimony given by James Johnson who interpreted for Parcos Harjo who was the Band King of the Oksoke Harjo, Seminole Tribe. There is no such thing a an Indian Princess. I guess Parhos's mother, Kersey came close, since she was the mother of a Band King. I have not pursued this any farther, since I received this card file. No 326. I need to. My nick name is Nunnie, and Louisa's mother was named Nennie. I have been told that Nuneea means " child of the afternoon ". I was born in the afternoon. I was told, it meant " Potato" in Cherokee. I guess I should accept that version, because as all of you know ,I am a true Kersey, and can be a real Potato Head sometimes Ha I think some of the numbers might have meant there was a testimony . Will check this out when I go to the Library. Doris

I have reason to think John A. Kersey's mother was Dorcas Kersey br. Nc. about 1780. These two men were born omly a few years apart. It seems funny that we can not find them prior to 1850. They both have a daughter named Martha and there is a possibility that John A.Kersey had a sister named Sarah. Sara Kersey Laughter >

---------- From: Graylwolfe@aol.com[SMTP:Graylwolfe@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 26, 1998 8:39 PM To: millerm@halcyon.com Subject: Fwd: Returned mail: Cannot send message within 3 days Marv and Kerseys, I found the following information in the Index to The Headright and Bounty Grants of Georgia 1756-1909. I hope someone will find a relative listed. From the beginning of Georgia, only males were sold land. If a male died, the land reverted to trustees. The Revolution Act of 1783 said that a man was entitled to 200 acres as his headright. He would get 50 acres each for his wife and each child and each slave. The total was not to exceed 1000 acres. Males who were eligible were persons of good standing who were faithful during the Revolution, and refugees who served in the GA Militia or other state Militias. They could receive land without fees. The man had to appear before 5 judges to swear an oath about his family members. He then could ask for a survey of the land that he wanted. The county surveyor would then lay out the land. He would keep a copy of the plat and send one to the state office. The man had to live on the land for 1 year. He had to cultivate at least 3% of the land for that time. Afterward, he could buy the land and pay any fees. Then the grant would be issued. The price of the land was between 3 shillings and 8 shillings per acre. After 1785, all land was granted free. Bounty land was for men who served in the Continental Line or Navy, militiamen, or distinguished citizens. There was no more bounty land granted after 1786. The person who granted the land was the first owner. He could sell it, give it away or will it to his heirs. The following counties of GA were involved: Burke, Richmond, Columbia, Lincoln, Elbert, Hart, Stephens, Franklin, Banks, Jackson, Barrow, Oconee, Clarke, Oglethorpe, Wilkes, Greene, Taliaferro, Hancock, Warren, McDuffie, Jefferson, Washington, Emanuel, Johnson, part of Laurens, Trutlen, Montgomery, Candler, Bullock, Effingham, Evans, Toombs, Tatnall, Long, Liberty, Bryan, Chatham, McIntosh, Glynn, and Camden. First though I'd like to tell everyone that I have gotten some of those folders from Wal-Mart. When I get mail listing any Kersey Lineage, I print it an put it in a protective sleeve and put it in the folder. They have them for 9 cents each. I keep every Surname color coded. It is easy to find. The Kersey's are Red. This helps when someone asks me to look up something. I go to the folder and find their family. Keep it handy for look-ups. I belong to other mailing lists, and keep them seperate. You can punch holes , you don't have to sleeve them. All of the Kersey's that I know have high cheek bones, and the dark complection, or redish, or ruddy look. We all have very long fingers. When I was little, I could span an octive on the piano with ease. My fingers turn up on the ends. I don't know about the Alcoholism. My Dad died very young and I wasn't around the Kersey's that much. How-ever all of the Kersey men that I knew and know do drink ! Hypertension runs in the family, so does Diabetes. I just found out last summer that I have Diabetes. Most of us are high strung. We are perfectionest, that's why, and we expect too much from other people because of it. We have pug noses. We do not have the Indian Plains Indian Nose. We have the Cherokee, nose because we all cames from the South Eastern Indians, which came from a melting pot of tribes. The picture of Louiza Kersey that Calvin Walker sent really looks Indian. She has the large hands, long fingers, square forehead, and pug nose. She's not very pretty, but God Bless her she's our's and I have her hanging on my computer room wall . We will all find a connection one day be it Indian or not. Doris

I recently found a citation that might help connect someone with an Indian ancestor. Listed on the 1810 North Carolina Census Microfilm M252 rolls 38-43, under "Other free heads of households": Kersey, William 11 Warren Co. My impression is that "Other free heads of households" includes free Negroes, Indians and half-breeds and perhaps others. Can anyone on the list comment on this ? Oct 15 1917 80 miles from Portsmouth. Several British Aeroplanes flew over our fleet at 7:55. I am standing a watch in engin room 12 to 4 am. It is now 12:10 am the worst part of Channel for Subs, but all is well. We will be in Portsmouth by 9am. Can't get thru Sub _____ until sun up. Oct 16 1917 The Chanel is not as dangerous as I expected but at that if that sub had caught us yesterday. Noodnite, I was expecting to see a sub every hundred yards. ( I skipped to Nov 8th 1917) I just completed a nice big job on the Cunningham, the OBrine. The Tucker is next. Nov 9th I passed an English soldier last nite he swinging a cane, hit my shoulder. The way he applogized...."Oh! excuse me, I am sorry, I didn't mean it, honest, I didn't" If it had been and American Sailor, he would have said "get the HELL out the way" I was out to sea last week to meet an American Convoy, gee but I got sea sick! the destroyer turns 60 degrees over...going some... Nov 12 1917 A German sub that was sunk at the Irish lighthouse last monday was raised today. I have a piece of Brace from its engine room. Nov 13th I very well remember this day the 13th. The Richard Kersey on the 1840 and 1850 census is my GreatGreat - Grandfather. His name was Richard G. Kersey and he was married to Susan and they had eight Children. Although he is not listed on the 1860 census we have found where he joined the Confederate Army on July 3,1861 and was at the surrender of Appomatix April 9,1865. After that we are not sure but we do know that he never came home, I found one record where he died from either wounds or disease. I'm in the process of getting his Militery records. His son Rowan was my GreatGrandfather and his son William Griff was my Grandfather. My father was Roger Sylvester Kersey. Do you think that maybe James , John , and Thomas on the 1820 census could be brothers of Richard or cousins? 1850 census says he was 40 years old at that time so he was proably born around 1810. Also is there anyway to find the census for 1880 - 1930? I can't seem to find those years. Gee I'm so excited that I seem to be getting all confused. ---------- From: Julia Brewer[SMTP:juliab@flash.net] Sent: Thursday, August 27, 1998 6:07 PM To: Kersey List Subject: My 2 Cents I wanted to chime in on the Indian connection too. We have very high cheek bones and the nose. We do have some alcoholism but that can be attributed to being "high strung" because that type of behavior can manifest itself in many ways. My father and his 12 bro and sis were all immaculate in appearance and their homes (I mean clean...my brothers and sisters and I are too). Acidy stomachs and big worriers and HUGE personalities. Reddish black hair. Sound familiar? Julia Ann

#47. Kersey Reminder - from Marv Miller
Top
Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 17:21:21 -0700 From: Marv Miller <millerm@halcyon.com> Subject: Kersey Reminder Hi folks-- Just a reminder. The list software only recognizes your mail for the Kersey list if it finds the word Kersey in the subject line. It has to be spelled just like that: capital "K", lower case "ersey". Nothing else works. If you don't have Kersey in the subject, then you have to hope that I notice your posting in my personal mail and reforward it to the list. Otherwise, no one else sees it. Thanks, Marv millerm@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/millerm

My Jesse H. Kersey was born in 1789 in Lumberton, Robeson, NC (this from his War or 1812 papers). He served for both NC and SC in that war. He was lived in Fairfield District, SC near the NC border after he got out of the service. He married there to a woman who is thought to be of German descent. He was granted bounty land in Camden, Wilcox Co., AL in 1850 and moved to that area where he died about 1860. I do not know yet who his parents were. He was the last male with the name Kersey in my line as I am descended from his daughter Maryann Elizabeth Kersey who married Anson Lott in Fairfield District, SC. The James Kersey you mentioned was in the Rev. War. He did live in KY for some time but returned to Robeson Co., NC before he died. I have a copy of his letters sent to the government requesting his pension, if any one has need of them. Barbara Patterson

Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 01:32:58 EDT From: BHP32743@aol.com Subject: Re: Kersey FW: Hi Cathy, You may not get much information on the death of your ancestor in the Civil War. My Jesse Kersey (born 1789 in Lumberton, Robeson Co., NC) had two sons- in-law who were killed in the war. Both of these young men were in 23rd Alabama stationed in Knoxville, TN. Jesse's daughter Maryann Elizabeth was married to Anson Lott (these are my ancestors). Anson died from measles on May 12, 1862 in Knoxville, TN. The 23rd AL was hit extremely hard by disease, apparently even more so than was the norm. The soldiers were dying so fast that they were buried three deep in a trench across the field that is now the Bethal Confederate Cemetery in Knoxville. There were no individual graves and markers. Anson's records were not filled out until after the 23rd AL surrendered after the siege of Vicksburg, MS. They were notated in error that he died in Nashville, TN. It took me a very long time to learn that the 23rd was never in Nashville. I finally found him after a friend in TN found a copy of a 1943 newspaper article about the Bethel Cemetery. (I have since been to visit the site.) Anson's records say only that he died on May 12, 1862 and that a coffin and burial site was paid for. Also buried at this site was Anson's brother, O. Lott. The other son-in-law was Alston Lott, Anson's brother, who was married to Jane Kersey, Maryann's sister. Alston died at Vicksburg, MS on Jan. 21, 1863. No cause of death is revealed. I located his grave in the Confederate section of the City Cemetery of Vicksburg, MS. Again, the records show only the date of his death and that a coffin and grave site was paid for. I hope that you find more, but most of the Confederate records are very brief and can contain some errors that can cause you lots of trouble as in Anson's case. Barbara Patterson

Since Peg and I both were Kerseys married to a Gee, I wondered because I can find nothing on the Cayce family. Census takers were not known for their spelling. Thanks. It mentions Thomas Kersey and list his possible children.....James Kersey is listed as a child.......I have a copy of a land deed where James sold land to Ninty Kersey in 1818 and later Ninty and Alfred Kersey sold this same property to someone else. Alfred Kersey is my line... I'll be glad to send the info in the book....if anyone is interested....There is alot of good info.... Lynda....GA

Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 15:22:17 EDT From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Re: Kersey Revolutionary Soldiers Marve and Kersey cousins, Of course this perked my attention. The South Carolina Kersey's had to be mine! However, I am going to have to study it ! My Stephen was born about that time frame. It all matches !. Stephen's wife was Mary Peace ( from GA ) but Mary died before Stephen. She was thrown off of the covered wagon and killed in Florida. If Sarah McCurdy was Mary's mother, then she was signing an Affidavit that Mary was married to Stephen Jr. who was the son of Stephen and Nancy Kersey. When was this Stephen born ? My Stephen was born abt 1812. and died in S. Florida around the late 1880's early 1890's I found a Stephen Kersey on the 1790 Pendleton Co, SC , Ninety-Six District . He is listed as having 0 Males 16+, 2 Males 16-, 3 females, 1 other, and no Slaves. I have often wondered, what the 1 other is? There was a Stephen Kersey 1840 in Guilford County NC, pg 217. Thanks Mary for the information. If we all put our heads together we can solve many of these mysteries. This gives me something to go on. Will work on it. Doris

It was interesting to me to see some using both Kersey and Casey surnames. These I'm going to have to look into. I have more information to add to one that was listed. Under NC I noticed William Kersey (Casey), wife Mary W299061/2 NC and VA Line. He was also listed under Casey in the Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files, in case someone recognizes the children's names. I'll write it just as it is in the files. Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 19:40:52 EDT From: BByrd27855@aol.com Subject: Re: My Kersey Line in GA OH! Help Marv, I have a death certificate for Bobby Lee Kersey, b.8-7-1890 and died 1-11-1975, born and died in Merriweather County, Georgia. His mother is listed as " Maggie" Butler and his father as Arch P. Kersey. This information was given by a daughter - Mrs. Karl Bridges. In searching for my grandfathers parents, I have concluded but not verified that Arch P. Kersey was his father, but his Mother was Mary Zella Lanier.!! I am still new at this. Where do I go now? Any help will be appreciated. I have talked with a number of 1st cousins- including those that lived near our grandparets and they do not know any more than I do. Only relatives of Horace Monroe that they remember are Uncle Bob & Uncle Arch and an aunt Maud in Texas.I have a death certificate for an Ira Maud Kersey b. 10/15/1906 in Titus Co. Texas and died 9/7,1985 in Meriweather Co. Ga. Her parentes are listed as Arch Pinkston Kersey and Mary Zeller Lanier. I am so confused. Sue

This puzzle is slowly fitting together. Name spellings- Either we have a lot of people who could not spell or all the Kersey variations don't fit together. I hope there were a lot of poor spellers in the past. That makes more sense. Mary Graylwolfe@aol.com

Date: Sun, 30 Aug 1998 00:32:55 -0500 From: "Teresa Smith" <orpllc@email.msn.com> Subject: Kersey: Woodbury Hello all. This is my first try at this so bear with me. Thanks to everyone for sharing their info -- especially Mary who provided me with the names of Robert and Sarah and thus has provided me with so much to work from. Mary S. Kersey and James Ransome Baker were my ggg-grandparents. Of their children, I know nothing of Coon Baker but would love to learn. Their daughter, Eliza Jane Baker was born Dec 3, 1864 and died June 19, 1941, married James Alfred Underwood. I believe Eliza Jane and James Alfred are buried at Pine Straw Cemetery in Meriwether County, GA. Their children were Ed Hill, James Russell, Charlie Pugh, Rufus Hines, Clifford and Maggie.
