Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1998 23:22:22 EDT From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Re: Kersey FW: Congrats Doris and Janis Well everyone, I might have jumped the gun ! It all fits!!! Now since I have been studying it there is a glitch. The Stephen that I think is our Stephen , was suppose to have died before 1840. I can't verify this. Maybe somebody can help us figure it out. 1820 Pendleton County ( Anderson ) Stephen Kersey is listed on page 182. 1820 Thomas " page 181 1820 " " " William Kersey page 220 1830 Anderson Dist, SC, Nancy Kersey is listed as head of the family, listed as living in her house is William Kersey under thirty page 106. 1830 Anderson County, SC , Stephen Kersey head of family. One other person under thirty. page 108. I am assuming this is his wife Mary. 1840 Anderson County, SC Listed as head of the family Mary Kersey, and living with her is her mother-in-law Nancy. The next place that Stephen and Mary Kersey show up in in 1850 in Pike County Alabama. I was certain that this was our Stephen. He was born in SC around 1812, or 1815 . He married a girl named Mary. The time frame and all fits. __________________________________________________________________ Today I was searching through some Kersey papers that I had printed, and came across something that Mary Wolfe sent a couple of weeks ago. It stated: " South Carolina, Stephen Kersey , wife Nancy W9101. South Carolina Line . The Soldier died on May 12, 1821 in the Anderson District of South Carolina, leaving a widow Nancy, who died on July 20, 1841, in Anderson County, leaving children. Elizabeth Simpson, Anna Avery, and Delila, and Sarah Kersey who were living in Anderson District of South Carolina. Sarah McCurdy ( Mary's mother ) age 81 signed an affidavit on August 1845 stating that her daughter Mary, was the widow of Stephen Kersey Jr., and that in 1845 her daughter had the family Bible. The soldier and Nancy married in Abbeville District, South Carolina 1780. " _________________________________________________________________ No where does it mention William who was living with Nancy in 1830. I assumed that William was her son. I guess I was wrong. He must have been her brother- in-law. Then I read somthing from Lynda. It stated that Mary Kersey sold land to America Kersey.. Would this be the same Mary Kersey, widow of Stephen ? Did Mary Kersey get the pension ? When did Stephen Kersey Jr. die ? That leaves this bunch of Kersey's off of the hook. They can't be kin, if that Stephen died. He was the one that I thought was our Stephen. WELL back to the drawing board !!! It's enough to make your hair fall out, you won't have to pull it out. These Kersey's had the same birthdates, same names, married women with the same names and named their children the same names. Don't any of you ever complain about an unusual name. At least he will stand out in a crowd. I'll swap Stephen for good ole Cader and Bannister, or maybe Cropper, or Pomp. I haven't had the heart to e-mail Janas yet. Maybe she won't be too mad at me. I should have known it was too good to be true ! Barbara wasn't in on it yet, she's busy being a new Grandmother , she has a new baby granddaughter Lauern, who weighed in at 8lb 4 oz. Thanks anyway for the congrats. Maybe we will find him someday. Right ! Doris

I am told that some of the family stayed in Texas and some returned to Ga. Also- Who was Pinke Elijah's father and where did they come from? Answers only bring more questions! If all of these dates are correct- we had a medical miracle in the family and no one knew it. Appears that Maggie lived to be 102 years old and gave birth to Billie Marie at 76 years of age. From "The History of Hendricks County (1914-1976)": ...Mary the youngest of Amos Kersey's children married Scott Miller after his first wife's death and lives in Amo..." And there you are? 2. Theo. Kersey had a style all his own when it came to putting the printed word to the page. This remarkable piece of writing is 195 pages, very cumbersome to inter- pret by today's standards, w/FTM, etc. I treasure it because it is one of those "labors of love", and of course, because some of my Henderson's show up. I have letters from him in which he invites me to the Kersey reunions in IN, and his sincerity endears him to me, although we never met. I wish that weren't the case. Twenty years ago, genealogy was real low on my list of interests, but it was there. 3. I'm going to send you, as a quote, your email. Let me know if it comes off in toto. Unable to print in entirety here. Are you using wordwrap? 4. I'll get a copy of the Hendricks Co. History, along w/Theo's masterpiece. Let me call around for cheapest per page rates on the copying, and get back w/you. 5. To fill in the pieces, I'll send you data on children of James Claude Henderson (my paternal grandfather) and his first wife, Eva Kersey. They had four children, Hazel, Cecile, Clyde, and Carroll. These four are my Dad James Russell Henderson (b. 1917) and his bro Howard Winston Henderson's (b. 1919), half bros and sis's. Have complete data on all four of them also, along with their wives and children. How far out there do you want to go w/these four? 6. Here's the story on Amos Kersey (1842-1923). Dad and Uncle Howard both have recall of him on his farm in Amo. Seems that they went to picnics there. They always pre- sumed him to be their grandfather since Hazel, Cecile, Clyde and Carroll (their half bros and sis's) called him "Grandpa." Their real grandpa was James Alpheus Henderson (1839-1907). I think it's interesting that James Claude Henderson kept up his connectiion with Amos and Mary (Cassity) Henderson, but Grandpa probably thought of Amos Kersey as a father more so than his own father--seems JC and JAH had a riff over JC leaving the farm for Indianapolis. 7. Re Rock Engine House. It's in Guilford. Will also send a copy of info from Guilford Gen. Soc. 8. Will figure out census dates I need for Kersy/Henderson folks who married. OK? I'm so pleased to have found this connection. And thanks for all the work you've done. Your "labor of love" also shows! By wild chance, do you or any of the others researching Kersey's, happen to have a photo of Amos and Mary (Cassity) Kersey? Oh, yes, tell me you do--that it's an 8.5 x 11 number, with all of them sitting on the front porch of the farmhouse in Hendricks County, and someone has dated it, and even written down names and ages of all 50 of them in the photo!!! Great, yep, that's the one I want. Sincerely, Janice Rae Henderson-Cohan 9930 Marty Street Overland Park, KS 66212 (913) 385-9930 FAX: (913) 385-9931

From "The History of Hendricks County (1914-1976)": ...Mary the youngest of Amos Kersey's children married Scott Miller after his first wife's death and lives in Amo..." And there you are?
