At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in Company I, 27th Volunteer Infantry and served till the end of the war. His regiment was attached to the Army of the Potomac. He participated in the first and second battles of Bull Run, Winchester, Antietam, and the three days struggle at Gettysburg in July 1863. His regiment was then transferred to Sherman's army, made the famous march to the sea, and participated in the Atlantic campaign. He was captured and put in Libby prison where he almost starved. When the war was over he went home and farmed with his father..." There was a man who lived virtually the entire scope of the Civil War! Marv millerm@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/millerm

You have Jullie marrying George Bartle. Actually, her name was Millie (Mildred Ann Kersey Lowman Bartee). Her first marriage was to James William Lowman (or William James Lowman--I've seen it both ways). George was George Bartee, not Bartle. The handwriting is often so hard to decipher! My mother's first cousins remember Millie--she ran a boarding house in Pulaski Co., VA around the turn of the century. I'll send more on the descendants if you are interested! Also, I have lost the email address of a gentleman who descended from Tom Kersey--I wanted to send a photo to him and need his snail mail address. Hope he reads this message and gets back to me! I ran across this bit of genealogical humor I thought you would all enjoy. The Smith's were proud of their family tradition. Their ancestors had come to America on the Mayflower. Their line had included Senators and Wall Street wizards. Now they decided to compile a family history, a legacy for the children. They hired a fine author. Only one problem arose----how to handle that great-uncle who was executed in the electric chair. The author said he could handle that chapter of history tactfully. The book appeared. It said that "Great-uncle George occupied a chair of applied electronics at an important government institution, was attached to his position by the strongest of ties. And his death came as a real shock." Pete Kersey

I have been searching a long long time for some tangible proof. All of you by this time know the story of Stephen being indian and raised by a white man, and educated to be a doctor I have found the Kersey name in several tribes, but have not connected Stephen to any of them. Since he married a girl from Georgia, he could have been connected to Angelia's tribe. Thanks, Doris

Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 19:53:52 EST From: KJSTaylor@aol.com Subject: Re: John Kersey m. Lucinda Ashworth OK--here's what I know about my Kersey bunch. John Kersey was born in TN about 1832, son of David Kersey and ??. John was a farmer and was living in Pulaski Co., VA when he was a teenager. He married a girl who lived in the same area. Her name was Lucinda Ashworth, dau. of Hillary Ashworth and his wife, Matilda Hurst. John and Lucinda had children. They were: 1-Mildred Ann Kersey (married 1, William James Lowman c. 1870 and 2, George C. Bartee in 1886.) 2-Nelson Kersey (married E.A.W. Folks May 22 1878--marriage performed by J. Kersey--probably James, brother of John Another record shows a marriage to Eliz. Umbarger. Not sure if this is supposed to be the same wife or not.) Buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Pulaski Co., VA. 3-Samuel Kersey (died as a teenager in logging accident) 4-Octavia Kersey (married French Odle). 5-Thomas Kersey (married 1, Ellen or Ella Linkous and had children Kelly, married Liza Terry; Rhoda m. ? Hardy; Mollie m. ? Baker ? Bell; Lena m. Kyle Covey; Thomas married 2, Jennie Hall, and had children Virginia Kersey Moore and Violet Kersey Crowder). There may have been other children for John and Lucinda. Lucinda was widowed by 1887 when she married William A. Linkous in Pulaski Co., VA. James Kersey married Mary Cook. Children were Lynch, Akin, Emeline, Rhoda, Eliza, Burnett--possibly others. I think that James and John might have had siblings in TN but I don't know for certain. They were working as laborers on the Pulaski, VA farm of Jeremiah Odle when the boys were 16 and 18. I assume the family was in TN still. Marv, question for you. Isn't David, father of John and James Kersey, too old to be a child of David (b. 1814) and Elizabeth Burgess? David, father of James and John is supposed to have married in 1827. Also, your web page does not show ancestry for this bunch as the list serve msg. of 98-11-09 showed. What do you think? Look forward to hearing from you and from anyone else interested in Pulaski Co, VA Kerseys and the illusive David from TN. Kathy

Brannon, of Sebastain Co. Ark. Polly Ann Parker/Kersey was 1/2 Cherokee Indian, born in Claiborne Co. Tenn. and her daughters were 1/4 Cherokee Indians. This was told to me by my grandmother, Nancy Lucinda Kersey/Carlile. Polly Ann Parker/Kersey applied for a Mexican War Pension, not a Civil War Pension, as I stated before. William H. Kersey served from June 1846 to May 1847. He was a private in the 1st Ala Vols. This information comes from the Mexican War, Act of Janurary 29, 1887 I have a copy of the application filed by Polly Ann Parker/Kersey with general affidavits. Troy Carlile in Tulsa.

I read my e-mail each day with great interest, even though I don't know half of you. I do believe with all my heart that somewhere along the line we are all connected. Tom knows alot more about researching than I do, so I hope I can pick up some pointers from him. In June I will be traveling to Georgia to do some of the long awaited research that I have been wanting to do for so long now. I agree the lineage in the Theodore Kersey book for David Kersey, father of John and James doesn't make sense with the dates you have given us. Too many generations, too little time.
