Date: Wed, 9 Dec 1998 11:16:30 -0500 From: Hooman & Linda Samimi <H_LKSamimi@compuserve.com> Subject: Kersey Place Names Hi Bill and All, I lived in Colorado in 1987-1988. One weekend I drove from Denver to Kersey just because I saw the name on the map. I like drivin' ;-) I went to the Police station , which was the only thing opened in the small town, and asked how the town got it's name. As far as I can remember he said that the town used to have another name. It is a very small town that has a railway running through . One day there was a runaway train that threatened to wipe out most of the town. A quick thinking man by the name of Kersey , who was passing through town ,pulled the lever at the last moment to divert the train to another track . I can't remember all of the details but it was such a heroic act that they re-named the town Kersey! As far as Kersey Creek is concerned ,it is in Hanover County Virginia. I grew up in that area and my uncle says that the Kersey's used to own quite a bit of land between Hanover Courthouse and Peaks on Route 301. The creek runs through this land and I believe that it flows into the Chicahominy River. It is a beautiful rural area , very lush and green. Another place I visited was Kersey, England. It is in Suffolk and it used to be a cloth- making village. Kersey cloth. It was a beautiful little village with a church on the hill and one winding road through town. I couldn't find any Kersey names in the Church or in the graveyard. We stayed in a bed & breakfast in town and and all they could tell us was that a " kersey" was a grassy knoll by water. They didn't know anything else about the history. It's sister city is called Linsey and it was also a cloth making village. We got some beautiful pottery from the local craftsman with a Kersey stamp on each piece! Best regards, Linda Kersey Samimi digest56.htm

I also have a copy of L.T. Kersey's book. Mine is a typed carbon copy on onion skin paper. Is yours like that? I don't know if the book was ever published or not. My 2ggrandfather is Asher Kersey, who is mentioned extensively in the book. His daughter Elizabeth by his second wife Edith Schooley is my great grandmother. I have lots more information on the lines mentioned in the book. Where do you fit in? I would love to trade information with you. I recently received another book by Theodore Kersey written in the 1970's which has a great deal of information on Indiana Kerseys most of which does not overlap with the L.T. Kersey book. My Kersey was in Florida in 1875 but have no idea where they were before 1875. Noone has ever mentioned a Ulysses Kersey in all the messages from the group, therefore he must have had a one of a kind name and should be easy to find.....Wrong!
