Date: Mon, 14 Dec 1998 21:19:55 EST From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Re: William Thomas Kersey Marv, William Thomas Kersey, born January 1885 to William Jasper Kersey ( Jasper was the son of Stephen A. and Mary Kersey ) and Mary Elizabeth King Kersey. The second marraige for both W.Jasper and Elizabeth. To my knowledge they only had one son, which was William Thomas. On the 1900 Census , Manatee Co. William and two sisters ( Annie & Cora ) are the only children listed to W. Jasper and Elizabeth. William Jasper Kersey first married Mary Melinda Folmar in Pike Co. Alabama. They had five children and only one of them was a son named Osceola Randolph Kersey born June 17, 1876 in Alabama. After Mary Melinda died, Jasper married Elizabeth King and moved to Manatee County, where his family was living. However, they didn't stay in South Florida. I don't know exactly when, but W. Jasper , wife and children moved back to Alabama. Jasper is buried in Red Oaks Cemetery, Red Oaks, Alabama It is my belief that he returned to the farm that Stephen had purchased, before leaving Alabama. I also believe that Stephen might have returned to Alabama with Jasper. I say this because, I can find no record of Stephen after 1870. I have found his children, but not him. I have family stories that have proven to be true Checking my records I find no children named John Jasper Kersey. Joseph Tally Kersey and Mary Duffel only had one son named Austin H. Kersey b. 1891. Again I am going by the 1900 Census. This child would have been listed with some of my family if he belonged . I believe he was born 1898. He certainly would have been listed on the 1900 Census. There is a family story ( legend ) that a Kersey in Manatee County adopted two black children , one was a boy and one was a girl. I'll see if I can find it among my MANY boxes of possible kin files. Anyway I can see how you would confuse John Jasper as being William's brother. Doris

Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 10:58:31 -0800 From: "Boone White" <boonan@teleport.com> Subject: Kersey family in Obion Co. TN. Hi Marv, I have been occupied with other things for a while, but now am confused about what you might have . Do you have anything in Obion Co. or nearby, that would be helpful on the family of Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Kersey who married Francis Marion Boone Nov 28, 1862. Mary Elizabeth was born in 1846 (I have in TN) but one account lists Jackson MO. Her father is John Kersey who married Matilda Oakley. I know that John's record here says he was from England, but it didn't indicate when. And the same with Matilda Oakley who was from Ireland, but that too did not indicate when. Maybe they belong to families with more history in the US. Do you have any suggestions where to search at all.? Thanks for getting me on board again. Boone White

Click on the slider and drag it down until you see the surname Meredith Click on Meredith and a list of individual names will come up in the left frame The last two names are Merediths but you will need to select "Next" to get to Elizabeth Then click on Elizabeth Meredith (1823-1917) The data on Elizabeth's family will show up in the right frame >From there you can click on individual names such as John B. Kersey. I take it from the subject line of your e-mail that the B. stands for Bale?? Paul <martee@usit.net> Hi Marv; My knowledge is quite limited, as said, since John Kersey and his mother, Anne Kersey, appear incidental to my lines only, yet I found John interesting. Richard Parker (b.c.1620-1677) married the widow Judith Burton Hunt (c1620-1679), my ancestress by William Hunt. Richard was a "brassier" (brazier, brass smith) and pewterer in Surry in that period, and at a Surry court of 1677 Anne - almost certainly then a widow - asked that John, her son, be apprenticed to Richard in order that the boy learn the "art and mysterie" of the metal working craft of Richard (see Surry Deed Book #2, p. 102). I searched no further, however did happen upon Kersey later in the 1670s, as I recall, in the "Lists of Tithables" for Surry County, VA, the same by MacDonald and Slaton (sp?) and published in a long serie in "Magazine of Virginia Genealogy." I believe Kersey appeared in Vol. 22, #2, p. 102 and in several other of that series during and after his apprenticeship. Despite a rather diligent search, I did not find either Kersey or Parker in any list of 17th century pewterers (did not check for brass smiths). I hope this bit helps someone, and I would very much like to know what came of his life and those of his descendants. Most cordially, Paul

Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 21:50:28 -0600 From: "Joe Kersey" <jakersey@erols.com> Subject: Kersey in York County Penn I found Karen Hutchison's e-mail about Kerseys in York County, Pa. very interesting. At the expense of repetition, my gggrandfather, Robert Kersey (born in Virginia) and his wife had 13 children. One of those was named William. One was named Elizabeth (nicknamed Bettie). There has been a pattern of names in my family tree that children are frequently named for their grandfather or grandmother. Karen's mention of William Kersey and his wife, Elizabeth hits the spot. We have been unable to get past Robert Kersey in our search. Maybe this is the link we have been looking for. The time period seems to be within the ballpark. Robert Kersey was born in 1802 somewhere in Virginia. Maybe Mary Wolfe can tie these dates together and we can pursue the York County Pa. Kerseys. Joe Kersey jakersey@erols.com
