Date: Sun, 17 Jan 1999 18:01:37 EST From: Graylwolfe@aol.com Subject: Re: Re: Kersey Horace Monroe Sue, I have an apology for my bad memory. In my last note, I talked about the distances between different towns. I referred to Woodbury several times. I should have said Woodland. Now for the correction. Woodbury is 13 miles northwest of Thomaston. The Kerseys and Britts lived between Thomaston and Woodbury. Woodbury is 10 miles north of Manchester. Pleasant Hill(Aquilla Cheney) is 13 miles southwest of Thomaston. That would still make it 5 miles from Roland. Chalybeate Springs is 10 miles from Manchester due east. Manchester is at the extreme southern portion of Meriwether County. That explains why some of the family were born in Talbot County.(It would have only been a mile or so into Talbot) Pinkney seems to have the name that came from the Britt Family. I did not know where I got Pinke(Pinkney) from but now I know. The 1860 Upson census is very legible. It says P.L. Kersey. I wonder if the family might have said Lije(L) for Elijah and the census taker was confused about it. I now know that your Uncle Bob Kersey's wife was Francena Hancock. I was confusing her with her brother who was Francis(my great grandfather) Hancock. In 1860, she was 4. To complicate things more, she had a brother named Robert Hancock.

This happened to some towns or settlements when the railroads came in and /or highways. See if you can find someone on the genweb genealogical society for that county and they may have an old atlas of the county. If you have the internet, go to the search feature and key in that county name, state, historical society-- or county, state, genealogy. You should have several features come up. Sometimes ancestry site has some old maps you can look at. Their site is www.ancestry.com and search that database. Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 19:59:28 EST From: Donnakk@aol.com Subject: re:Kersey am hoping that maybe you would have some idea of a connection to another spelling of our sound alike names. My husband's grandfather obit, states Thomas Henry Kursey was born in Clear Spring, MD, Dec. 28, 1883 to James and Sarah Cunningham Kursey. Thomas is suppose to have worked on others farms until he had enough money to purchase his own, which is in Tomahawk, WV about 20 mi. from where he was born. My brother-in-law and I have been trying find where they came from and have just have had all dead ends. We live with-in 5 miles of Clear Spring, have been to libraries and all we have is that every once in awhile someone must have spelled the name this way. The only living Kursey's we can find are relations. I have been reading your web it is very interesting to me, I can see that the given name comes up over and over. I also read that you are researching Quakers and we are close to that area too. Really we are at such dead ends any info would spark more to look into. Thank you, Donna Kursey Donnakk@aol.com ----------------------- Headers --------------------------------

I sure hope that Donna has proof of this and would share her connection and information with the list. I have not been on line for over a week. Am on the Board of Directors of the home owners association where I live and they have kept me busy for quite a while. Hopefully I can get a breather and catch up with my mail. Glad to see the List picking up again. Doris

It seems that when they stepped off of the Ship, they immediately scattered, and changed the spelling of their names. There are a lot of decendents from Kentucky. I have been on the list for quite a while, and have found two cousins. I think if you get even one scrap of information from the list, it could be the puzzle that leads you to solving your connection. Hang in there and keep reading, eventually you will connect. I think that all of us are connected in one way or another. This list keeps us connected as friends, even if we can't find a blood relative. Good Luck, Doris

I have been with the group for almost 2 years. I have met many dead ends. This group is a wonderful group of people. If anyone has information on your family, they will help you. Just hang in there. Search out all the leads. If you have a printer, print out everything. File by families. I am like Doris. Somebody or (bodies) came to this country on on a ship or ships. Then they scattered out to only Heaven knows where. For the most part, information is out there waiting to be discovered. It is a tremendous puzzle. Many parts seem to be missng. Maybe with everyone's help we find the missing pieces. I love you all. Mary Wolfe Graylwolfe@aol.com

My grandfather, two brothers and their mother were from Owens Co. Ky. and came out to Ks. and then made the land rush into Okla. in 1892. Oddly enough my grandfather's name was also Russell so maybe there is a connection there somewhere since I've lost track of a first cousin by the name of Russell Luther Kersey. Keep in touch with the group and if I have ant info of importance to you just let me know. Are you located in Az., From your e-mail address thought you might be. Earl B. Kersey
