Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 09:46:38 -1000 From: "Ralph T. Williams" <tabor@lava.net> Subject: More on Cader Kersey et al. Marv, >From copies of documents found in Miscellaneous Records Book No. 1, Probate Court, Wakulla County, Florida, the following information may help interested researchers in learning more about the Cader Kersey/Elizabeth (-?-) family and their nine children, all born in GA: Louisa, Martha, Sarah, Ann, Mary, Elijah, David E., Amanda, and George W. On 19 NOV 1867, Cader made a nuncupative will, in which he stated that his real estate should be equally divided, after Elizabeth's death, between sons David and George. There are other provisions, but I will not list them. W. G. Robeson, A. W. C. Trice, and Elizabeth Kersey appeared before H. L. Hendeerson, Judge of Probate, Wakulla County, FL, and attested to the substance of Cader's will. Other heirs of Cader Kersey appear in follow-on statements, and may help to sort out the marriages of Cader's daughters. Keeping in mind that atrocious handwriting made the names hard to read, I deciphered these as: Decatur County, GA. M. C. Butler, C. H. Butler, Sarah Maxwell. Wakulla County, FL. William McEachern, J. C. Rush, David E. Kersey, F. M. Vause, who married Ann Marie Kersey, my great-great-grandmother. Leon County, FL. L. Gussett, Elias C. Gussett. Other information collected from the nuncupative will and related documents follows: David's full name was David Emanuel Kersey. His first wife was Caroline (-?-). His second wife was Mary N. (-?-), and she was the administratrix of his estate. David had a son named George S. Kersey. George W. Kersey's wife's name was S. Eliza (-?-). Comments, amplifications, anything, please. #5. Last call for Andersonville for the Kersey Group - from Joe Kersey
Top
Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 22:31:35 -0500 From: "Joe Kersey" <jakersey@erols.com> Subject: Last call for Andersonville for the Kersey Group When I was a child (iving in Thomaston, Ga.) my mother took us to Andersonville to see the prison grounds. I believe she wanted us to see the effects of man's inhmanity to man. In the early 1970's, my wife and I along with our son visited Andersonville. It was a warm day in June. There were only a few people there. It was unbelievably quiet and still. There are signs which telll the story of the prison. The worst was the discription of the death line. this line was drawn on the earth about 10 feet from where the fences once were. Any prinsoner who crossed the death line were shot. According to the story, the prisoners were almost dying of thirst, and one afternoon a storm came up and lightning struct the ground in the camp. A spring sprung up at that point thus prividing water for the prisoners. I don't believe there has been a better example of divine intervention that this. As we walked around looking at the grounds and reading the signs, tears came to my eyes. It seemed almost impossible that any human beings could treat other humans in such a fashion. The camp commander, Henry Wirz (I believe he was a captain) was captured, he was couert martialed. Local people from Americus, Georgia testified at his trial and said that they tried to deliver food to the prisoners but Captain Wirz would not permit it. Captain Wirz was faound guilty and hanged. At that time, all confederate prisons were under the control of a general named John Henry Winder. General Winder was totally corrupt. His staff consisted of mostly his own relatives. But General Winder got his just desserts. A captain on General Winder's staff had come by a pig and infited General Winder to his home to participate in a feast. After gorging himself on pork, General Winder died that afternoon. It was ironic that General Winder died of overeating while his prinsoners were dying of starvation. I would like to suggest that anyone in the neighborhood of Andersonville should go to the prison area. And those of you who are desendants of Robert Kersey could stop by Thomaston, Ga. where our branch of the Kersey family began. Joe Kersey jakersey@erols.com

Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 03:14:43 -0400 From: Cathy Phipps <nut1@bellsouth.net> Subject: Civil War Kersey's Hi Marv and All Ya'll Cousin's!! I can't say enough how much I enjoy coming home from work at night and reading all the email from all you wonderful souls. Being a Kersey and from a totally disfunctional background it is so nice to be able to really get to know so many of you. I do believe that there is more nice Kersey's than not and I believe that the Civil War had alot more to do with the alcoholism than we may realize. My GGGrandfather Richard G. Kersey, Also Tom Kersey's GGGrandfather, from Emanuel Co. Georgia, joined the civil war on July 3,1861. We know he was at the surrender at Appomatix on April 9,1865. He did not make it home. Records tell us he died there from wounds or disease. Census records shows his family was all over in different areas of Emanuel Co working as farm labor or house servants. There was eight children and I just can't imagine the untold hardship's of what they went through in the south following the civil war. After the assassination of President Lincoln the reconstruction of the south came to a halt. I can really see how maybe the enviroment they were in can be indusive for strong drink........... I think about these people alot, more so now that both my parents are passed. I started looking into the family's past to find out why so much disfunction existed. I have finally come to a place where I can understand the why and now can accept the past. I truly owe the strong, compassionate person that I am today to these early pioneers that endured so much just to survive and I'm proud for the first time in my life that I'm a KERSEY. Cathy Kersey Phipps ps Doris, I think you are just a Fantastic Person and a wonderful researcher!!!
