#2. Martha Jane Kersey - Iowa - from Bonnie Arbuthnot

Date: Mon, 03 May 1999 16:33:36 CDT From: "Bonnie Arbuthnot" <bs_arb@hotmail.com> Subject: Martha Jane Kersey - Iowa It has been some time since I posted my brick wall to the group. On the family search site of LDS I found something that might be a clue, so here goes. I am searching for the parents of Martha Jane KERSEY born c 1839 in North Carolina. She married Jonathan DENNEY. Their son William Henry DENNEY was my Great Grandfather. Jonathan DENNEY died in 1869. Martha Jane DENNY is listed as head of household in the 1870 Appanoose County, Iowa Federal Census. I have been unable to locate her since then. It seems likely that she remarried since she was quite young when Jonathan died and she had six children. Now in the family search site of LDS I located a Martha KERSEY b. 1840 in Guleford (their spelling), North Carolina. She has two siblings listed: Isaac KERSEY b. 1844 Guleford County, North Carolina, and Anna Marie KERSEY b. 1853 Appanoose County, Iowa. The father Henry KERSEY born c. 1814 Guleford, North Carolina. The wife is Elizabeth HIATT born 1818 Guleford, North Carolina. Marv, in your database there are listed Isaac KERSEY b. 1844 N.C., Ann M. KERSEY b. 1854 Iowa, and Melinda R. KERSEY b. 1857 Iowa. Henry KERSEY born c. 1814 North Carolina is their father and Elizabeth ? is their mother. Does anyone have any information that could verify that HENRY KERSEY is my Martha Jane's father and that any of these are her siblings? The 1860 Federal Census of Appanoose County, Iowa, has HENRY KERSEY and family living not far from Jonathan Denny and family. Henry Kersey Age 46, Elizabeth Kersey Age 44, Isaac Kersey Age 16, Ann M. Kersey age 6, and Melinda R. Kersey Age 3. I don't want to make the assumption that HENRY was Martha Jane's father without a little more information, but it seems a pretty good assumption. Does anyone have any more information about my Martha Jane Kersey? Thanks in advance. Bonnie _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I have just learned about the Kersey list and am eager to become involved with other Kersey members. My computer skills are limited, so I hope I am doing this right! My great-grandmother was Melissa Alice Kersey. She was born November 9, 1892 in Putnam County, West Virginia. She married twice and her second husband was Leviticus Edens of Kanawha County--my great-grandfather. Melissa's father was John Madison Kersey. I have very little information on him and am eager to learn more. I think he was born August 1852 (based on census information) either in Pennsylvania, Ohio or maybe Indiana. He married Samantha Almeda Gillespie in Kanawha County West Virginia on April 3. 1881. I have census information with John and Samantha living in Putnam County, West Virginia. Can anyone help me from here? I love family research and am thrilled to live only 70 miles north of Salt Lake City!!! Write soon!!! I am always eager to make new contacts and meet new people!!! #4. Re: Kersey's at Andersonville - from midgard
Top
Date: Tue, 04 May 1999 15:45:15 -0400 From: midgard <midgard@icx.net> Subject: Re: Kersey's at Andersonville Dear All, Here is a bit more information on the Kersey brothers who were at Andersonville Prison: Benjamin Vierling Kersey: He enlisted Sep 12, 1861 at Muscatine, Iowa for service in the Civil War, in Company "B", 11th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, for three years. His mother made the "butternut" uniform which he wore at his wedding. He was wounded at the battle of Shiloh, early in April, 1862, and was sent home on furlough, during which he served as a recruiting officer. When his hand was shot through, he took out his pocket knife, and, holding his wounded hand up against a tree, severed with his other hand the shreds of flesh still holding a finger, then bandaged it and went forward with his fellows. When he went back to active duty, his brother Thomas, went with him, enlisting Sep. 5, 1862 at Muscatine, into the same outfit. They were a part of Crockson's Iowa Brigade, composed of the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th regiments, and they were in the following battles: Shiloh, Iuka, Corinth, Big Shanty, Vicksburg, and Atlanta, where, on July 22, 1864, Ben, Thomas and their friends, James Fitzgerald, James Armstrong and others were captured, and taken with about 2000 others to the Confederate prison at Andersonville, Georgia, on July 28, 1864, where there were about 28,000 Federal prisoners at the time. On their way, feelings of pity were expressed to them by their guards who had seen what Andersonville was like, and whose human sympathy extended even to their captives in battle. James Armstrong managed to escape a little later by slipping unoticed into a detachment of men being counted off for exchange, and thus brought the first news of the boys being "missing" after Atlanta. After being in Andersonville for two months, orders came to send out men in groups of 100, the supposition being that they were to be exchanged for Confederate prisoners held in the North. seeing that he would be the last of a group, J. Fitzgerald stepped aside and allowed Thomas, much weaker than he to go out. Later developments turned to jim's advantage as he was exchanged while Ben's group was sent to Florence, South Carolina, where about 36,000 men were confined, in conditions worse, if possible, than in Andersonville, but Jim's intended kindness was never forgotton. In Florence, the fact that Ben was a Freemanson enabled him to get a few favors from the Guards, like being on the wood patrol outside the stockade, for which he recieved an extra ration of food which he shared with his brother. One evening Ben failed to return to his shanty and his brother. A second and third day passed, and still he did not return. Someone told Thomas that Ben was in the prison hospital and wanted to see him. Reaching the hospital, where visitors were strictly prohibited, Thomas waited an opportunity, and when the outer guard was a little negligent, he slipped inside where he found Ben, sick with fever, almost to weak to talk. His last words to Thomas were " Goodbye, Clark, keep a stiff upper lip!" They had only a few minutes of whispered conversation before being discovered, when Thomas was thrown out, bodily. It was the last that was ever heard of Ben. He is probably buried in an unmarked trench grave in the wilderness near the stockade, about Feb. 6, 1865. Thomas Clark Kersey: On Feb. 18, 1865, orders came for a group of prisoners to be sent out of Florence, again in the hope of exchange, but they were sent instead to Goldsboro, North Carolina, where they were held under guard in a forest. Thomas and his friend, James Fitzgerald were among these men. After a few days there were new orders to move them to a train "somewhere", would it be exchange, or back to Andersonville, Florence or elsewhere in prison still? On the way to the train, Thomas, weakened by hunger and exposure during his 7 months in prison, was staggering along, and said to his friend, "I can't make it!" To which Jim replied, "Here Clark, grab hold of my coattail". Arriving at the siding where the frieght train awaited, Thomas was helped aboard by his friend, without whose assisstance, he often said, his remains would be mouldering in that forest near Goldsboro. The prisoners were taken to the Union lines at North East River, and exchanged. There was no triumphal parade. Those ragged, half-starved men, Thomas still holding Jim's coattail, were a pathetic sight. Thomas was paroled Mar. 20, 1865, and got to Marshalltown, Iowa by train, where he paid a liveryman $10.00, all he had, to take him as far towards his home as he would. No-one at home knew he was coming, or even if he was alive! Bangor was as far as he got, and the liveryman just abandoned him there, showing less sympathy than the Rebel guards on his way to Andersonville! He was so weak and emaciated he could barely walk. A Jess Stanley volunterred to take him the rest of the way home to Providence township, to his father's house, where his totally unexpected appearence, in his sorry condition, caused the kind of stir that is best left to the imagination, for, in going to war, he had violated one of the cardinal principles of the Quaker church. He was visited by a committee and offered the option of coming before the meeting with an apology, and asking forgivness, or of being disowned. He chose to be disowned. In an address by Gen. Wm. W. Belknap at a reunion of Crockers' Iowa Brigade, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in Sept. of 1883, he said: "Those who come after, will. as the years go on, search the rolls of these regiments and point with pride to the names of men which they feel honored in bearing. Years ago, in fields far away, on the march, by campfires where tired limbs were resting, in the night air with but a blanket between them and the sky, the men of these regiments tried to see their future, and wondered whether, in later years their works, would be forgotten, or whether, when march and fight and war were over, and another generation had grown up, if they would be recalled and honored with the glad approval of those at home." He married his deceased brother's wife, Amanda Jane Benbow. -- Mark and Mariah Lawson midgard@icx.net http://user.icx.net/~midgard/frntdoor/frntdoor.htm ICQ UIN 2128207 (Nick: Vigbrand) "Universe is not required to maintain a straight face!" I installed the McAfee Antivirus Program. I don't know what I did, but I locked up everything. I could only turn the computer on, and that was all ! My computer files was telling me that I had enough hard drive space, but I kept getting a message that I had no hard drive space left at all. I know better than that, I have 8.4 Gig of Hard Drive Space. I know that I haven't filled that up ! Anyway after much ado and a lot of help, I am back up and running. Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 08:38:49 EDT From: BUFFUM2@aol.com Subject: Re: Kersey Fw: My Mother I know this is a genealogy list, but feeling Gene's pain on the loss of his mother, and Mother's Day having just been yesterday, I would like to share a poem with those of you that are grieving about your mothers. I lost my mother in 1986, but the pain remains. I was going through her things after she passed away and I came across this poem by Helen Steiner Rice. Mother had left it for me to share with the rest of my siblings. It does not take the pain away, but helps get through it, knowing that your mother is still there for you even after death. " When I must leave you for a little while, Please do not grieve and shed wild tears, and hug your sorrow throught he years, But start out bravely with a gallant smile, and for my sake and in my name, live on and do all things the same. Feed not your loneliness on empty days, but fill each waking hour with useful ways, reach out your hand in comfort and in cheer. I in turn will comfort you and hold you near; And never never be afraid to die, For I am waiting for you in the Sky ! Your Mother did not leave you Gene, she lives on in you and your children, she will always be with you. I know that these are just words, but hopefully you might fine comfort in them. God Bless Each Of You that missed your mother yesterday . Doris

To my knowledge it was not auctioned off. They just do appraisels. You had to listen real close to hear the appraiser say the uniform was more valuable because it was made out of Kar Zay Blue. I've seen that show twice now, maybe they will show it again this summer on a rerun, and you will get to see it. My great grandfathers unifrorm is in the Montgomery, Alabama Archives. I went up there and took pictures of it. Doris

#30. Kersey Village - from Ted and Winn Kersey
Top
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 23:07:22 -0400 From: Ted and Winn Kersey <ekersey@idirect.com> Subject: Kersey Village Hi Marv: I have had the privelege of visiting the Village of Kersey in Suffolk on two occasions. It is truly a quaint place in a valley between two hills. I quote from one writer's picturesque description, "Between its two hills, one crowned by the Church and the other by the remains of an Augustinian Priory, Kersey lies like an enamelled jewel in the cup of a giant's hand....". The church is called St. Mary's and is an historic building. While it was largely built in the 14th century, it began much earlier as it is mentioned in the Domesday Book which was compiled in 1085-6 at the order of William the Conqueror. The 14th century building gives evidence of the apparent prosperity of the area at the time. To quote another source, "It is a reminder of the centuries when half the men in England wore hard-wearing Kersey cloth, just as the women wore Lindsey Woolsey, made in the neighbouring Village of Lindsey." It is a beautiful Church and it still bears the scars of the Cromwell attacks on Churches. here is an accompanying cemetery and I looked for Kersey graves but found none but many of the tombstones are so old that the writing is no longer visible. There is an interesting epitaph on one of the stones. It reads: Reader pass on nor waste thy time On bad biography or bitter rhyme For what I am this humble dust enclose, And what I was is no affair of yours. As you descend the hill from the Church you come to a plave where the local stream flows right across the road. It is called the Kersey Splash. It is not deep enough to bother automobiles but there is a raised walk so pedestrians don't have to get their feet wet. Here the street is lined with the quaint weaver's cottages from the days when this was a thriving weaving village. I could say a lot more about the place but I'll not bore you with more. I would say that I also saw the Antique Road Show on TV where they showed the Confederate Army tunic made from Kersey cloth. My sister has acquired about 15 yards of new Kersey cloth from a place in Missouri. I believe there are other places in the States where it is available. Incidentally I have traced my ancestry back to Fingringhoe in nearby Essex. I look forward to receiving the first set of Tom's pictures. Thanks for all your work, Marv.
