From: <WKeirsey@aol.com> To: <millerm@halcyon.com> Sent: Thursday, May 06, 1999 7:54 PM Subject: Keirsey Family Hi !! I got your name off the Web, hope you don't mind. I've traced my family back to 1805 for sure and I'm running into a wall. Can you help? I have gotten to William A. Keirsey born in 1805 in Amelia County, VA who married Pamelia Dagnell daughter of Richard, on July 2, 1832. Can't seem to find any more info beyond this and thought you could help. I do have Martha Cooper's book on the family history of Keirsey/Kiersey/Kersey.... Thank you for your time on this. Sincerely, Walt Keirsey

This unit was composed of Mobilians. So, I have listed them below, along with a little information about the battery, for all of you to view, just in case the list includes one of your ancestors. The list is kind of long. I hope that no one minds the post being so long. Kathryn Gage's Battery (from Confederate Military History) Gage's battery was organized at Mobile in October 1861, and remained under the command of Captain Charles P. Gage in the defenses of the city until the following spring. Sent north, it suffered severely at Shiloh, where its conduct was highly commended by Generals Withers and Chalmers. It then returned to Mobile, and was used in the defenses until the fall of the city. Lieuts. James H. Hill and James T. Hutchisson were promoted, and commanded the battery at different times. Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 00:07:10 -0400 From: Charlie Kersey <kersey@typhoon.coedu.usf.edu> Subject: Kersey:CMD:SUBSCRIBE Hi Marv, I just found your page while doing some web surfing. Please subscribe me to the Kersey Mailing list. I fear that I probably cannot offer much to the list but I hope to find things out from it. My father has no recollection of his father and mother. He was always told they died in a car wreck in the early 1930's but he's fairly sure that isn't true. He seems to recall his mother dying of typhoid or tuberculosis at home but his father wasn't present. He thinks one of his older sisters has information but she won't tell anyone anything. I'm trying to use the internet and glean any information I can. The two names I'm searching are Sidney P. Kersey (possibly "Phillip") and Flossie Mae (nee' Johnson) Kersey. They would have lived in or around Cordele, Georgia and/or Tampa, Florida in the mid-1920's through about 1933. Various stories are that Sidney was a railroad worker, hobo, small-time hood, dirt framer, etc. Flossie worked as a domestic in Cordele in the late 1920's when my dad was born (10-7-1929). Part of the mystery is that my father's birth certificate seems to indicate he was the 5th surviving of 6 births, however, he only has three sisters that he knows of. There is apparently a possibility he has another brother or sister who relocated to New York. The name "Hedburg" he seems to remember somehow. Another little tidbit, Apparently Flossie's father was a William Johnson but his last name was really Griffin (or maybe vice-versa) who killed someone up North and relocated to the South (Tampa, Florida) after serving time. Any help would be appreciated. I'll be logging on to the LDS site tomorrow when it goes on line!!! Thanks, Charlie Kersey

Pat pathenry@micron.net Good morning! I have been interested in the Kersey of Caswell group for some time because John Kersey who married Agnes Hightower there in the 1790s took his family and moved to Grainger Co., TN (perhaps ca. 1810) and their records there are often spelled Casey as well as Kersey. Agnes is shown as a widow with children there in the 1830 census and I believe John had died ca. 1829. Some of Agnes' Hightower relatives were also in Grainger. I'm not sure how this would fit with the John who died in Caswell in 1791 and the one who died there in 1812. My Kersey/Casey line had moved from Greene Co., TN to Grainger in 1796/97. We, too, have a John Kersey/Casey, and he is the one who became a magistrate/sheriff in adjoining Claiborne Co. ca. 1800, but he also had land in Grainger. We have never been able to trace our John's marriage or children, if either existed. Part of the problem is trying to separate the records of the John Kersey of Caswell and our John Kersey. If anyone can identify a marriage and children for our John Kersey, I would be thrilled. He was the brother of my direct line James Casey (wife Elizabeth), who along with John and another brother Samuel, were in Grainger Co. from 1796/97. Samuel died in Grainger in 1799, and John continues to appear in records in Grainger and in Claiborne. My James stayed in Grainger until he moved to Rhea Co. by 1823. I hope this will be of help to someone! The continuous use of both the spelling Kersey and Casey, often in the same record, in the South makes it necessary to check indexed material both under the C and under the K. Pansylea

#21. Kersey Family - from Suave Moose

Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 20:22:48 -0400 From: "Suave Moose" <suavemoose@ctel.net> Subject: Kersey Family Hi there, I know you probably can't help me but a needle in a haystack is better than no needle at all. I am an adopted child. I was born on October 20, 1964 in DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, VA. I found out that there are only three baby girls born in that hospital on that day, baby Morton, baby Yorkwitz, and baby Kersey. Seeing as I am Irish and Lithuanian I figured that Kersey is probably the birth family I am seeking. I was adopted throught Catholic Adoption Services of Hampton Roads. If you have any information at all that would help me in my search for my birth family I would really, really appreciate it. I am not seeking to disrupt my birthparents/siblings lives. I am a professional historian and am only interested in my heritage (not that I would object to being reunited with any and all siblings or relatives, my adoptive parents passed away over ten years ago). I realize this is a strange request but any info you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch, Peg Goggin Kearney

I, myself, have not researched this, but is what I have found. John Jr. married to Agnes Hightower, by all indications, would be the son of John Kersey Sr. (will of 1812) and Eleanor Robinson. This John (1812 will) would be the son of John Kersey (will of 1791) and wife Ursula. Children listed for John Sr and Eleanor Robinson are: Thomas, William, James, David, Samuel, Dicy, Drury, Sarah (Sally), Martha, Alexander and John Jr. John Sr. did not name all of his children in his will. It appears he named the younger ones and unmarried ones. Those named were: Dicy, Drury (single), Martha (single), Sarah/Sally (single), and Alexander. In the 1800 NC census are the following in Caswell Co: Living close to each other: David--701 James--700 John Jr-700 John---700 Samuel 700 In the 1810 NC census in Caswell Co are James, John, John Jr, and Samuel, all 485. They have quite a few actual images from the 1850 census. I found several families of black Kerseys from Georgia who had moved to Indiana, apparently about 1820, as all the children after about 1820 were born in Indiana. This is very interesting as it possibly ties together several recurring discussion threads on the list. More details tomorrow when I am more awake. #30. Kerseys in Illinois - from Rick Blangiardi
Top
Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 13:04:40 -0700 From: RickB@prodnet.com (Rick Blangiardi) Subject: Kerseys in Illinois Marv: I'm a new subscriber to the list. In my last email to you (which was my first email to you) I said I was searching for information on my great-grandfather who fought for the Union from Iowa. You responded by sending me a copy of an old email from someone who asked about the same man. The author of that email was a cousin of mine and we were both wrong. It seems my great-grandfather -- James Alton Kersey -- fought in the 104th Infantry from Troy Grove in LaSalle Cty., Illinois. He was in the 104th for four months until he was discharged on Christmas Eve 1862 because of wounds. Additional Illinois Civil War records show a James A. Kersey also fighting for the Union in the 4th Cavalry and transferred to the 12th in june 1865. I have no proof yet, but I think these records may all be about the same man: my great-grandfather. The 1860 Illinois Census not only shows a James Kersey living in LaSalle Cty., Illinois, but also a Daniel Kersey living in LaSalle Cty. at the same time. Could this Daniel be a relative of James? I also know my great-grandfather James married a woman named Julia Elizabeth Baxter who I'm told is from Canada. They moved to South Dakota where my grandfather --James Andrew -- was born in 1882 in the Village of Eden, Lincoln Cty. From there they went to Oregon in 1888. Does anyone have any leads for me? Thanks to you and to all. Barbara Kersey Blangiardi
