From Pittsylvania County, he went west in 1779 to settle in that part of Virginia which, in 1792, was be become the state of Kentucky. In September of 1780, at Lexington Station, now the city of Lexington, Kentucky, Kersey enlisted in Col. Daniel Boone's Virginia Regiment, serving in companies commanded by Capt. Robert Patterson and Cap[t. William McConnell, in campaingns against the Indian allies of the British. He was honorably discharged in November of 1782 after two years and two months of service as a private soldier. While a resident of Nicholas County, Kentucky, and at the ripe old age of 75 years, Kersey was granted a veteran's pension by a grateful government on May 2, 1832. His pension was transferred to Boone County on May 27, 1837, when he came here (Boone Cy) with his children who had previously emigrated from Kentucky.. John Kersey"s sons acquired large tracts of land from thegovernment in this part of Indiana and reared big families, of whom many decendants are still living in Boone County. In Late 1965, the James Hill Chapter of the D.A.R.,secured a government grave stone from the U.S. General Services Administration and placed it at the grave of John Kersey, in the Beck Cemetery, three miles northwest of Lebannon on U.S. Road 52. The new gravestone , appropriately inscribed, augumented a weather-etched, time-eroded marble slab place at tahe grave of the old soldier a hundred and twenty-two years ago bearing the now faded inscription, "John Kersey, Died Dec. 9, 1852, age 88yrs, 8mos.23 days." A similar slab nearby marks the grave of Kersey's wife, Lucretia, who died July 19, 1840, at the age of seventy years. (from BOONE , Your County Magazine)

Unfortunately we haven't been in touch with her for a while so I haven't been able to get any information from her. I would love if you could fill me in. Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 10:24:11 -0600 From: Pat Henry <pathenry@micron.net> Subject: Kersey:Jennifer Kersey's family Hi, Jennifer. I was so glad to hear from you. Martha doesn't have an email address. If you could email me at pathenry@micron .net and give me your snail mail address and phone no. I'll give it to Martha. She knows everything you want to know about Dick Kersey etc. In fact she's working on charts and group sheets etc on her family which knowing her, she'd love to share them with you. I have an ancestor chart of hers that she sent me one time that I'll try to give you what little I have for now. Of course it doesn't list all the children. As for George Madison Kersey, there are others on the list who also tie to him through his 1st wife Lucy Brock. His 2nd wife Elizabeth Gilliam is my GG Grandmother. I'll give you what I have from that side from the ancestor chart Martha sent. Her Great Grandparents are George Madison Kersey and Elizabeth Gilliam. Her Grandfather (who was a brother of my Arthur Kersey) is George Washington (NICK) Kersey m. 1867 to Mary Jane Gilliam. This Nick Kersey and Mary Jane had a son---Martha's Father---George Washington (DICK) Kersey b. 1884, Seb. Co AR, d. 1965, Seb Co AR. He was m. 1909 to Katie Jim Pettus. Their daughter is our Martha Jane Kersey Ford. She has some siblings, but I don't know all their names, except Billy Jack Kersey. I didn't include all the dates and places from the chart. Martha has all kinds of information on the ancestors of her Grandmother Mary Jane Gilliam, back to the 1700s. She also has lots of info on her Mother's Pettus family. This is about all I know on her side of the family. As for Geo. Madison Kersey and Elizabeth Gilliam (my GG Grandparents) all that any of us know as of now are birthdates, death dates, where buried, when and where buried and the names, dates, spouses of their children. Who were the parents of Geo. and Elizabeth, and where they were born is still a mystery to all of us so far. The others that have contacted you can fill in the information on George's 1st marriage to Lucy Brock. I'll be talking to Martha this week, so let me know your address and phone so I can tell her. I'll also send your "Hi" and you "love her". So glad you wrote the Kersey List. Pat pathenry@micron.net

#46. RE: Kersey Family - from Marv Miller

Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 20:36:34 -0700 From: "Marv Miller" <millerm@halcyon.com> Subject: RE: Kersey Family Hi Janet-- Thanks for writing. Let me see if I can explain this without confusing you more. Cousins are people who have common ancestors. First cousins have a pair of grandparents in common. Second cousins have a pair of great-grandparents in common. Third cousins have a pair of great-great-grandparents and so forth. So first cousins have a common ancestor two generations back. Second cousins have a common ancestor three generations back, etc. Now what happens if it's not the same number of generations back to the common ancestor for each of the two people? Say, for example, that one set of my grandparents are your great-grandparents. We would be first cousins except that you are one generation further "removed" from our common ancestor than I. So, we are first cousins, "once removed". If my great-grandparents are your great-great-great-grandparents, we would be second cousins except that you are two generations further "removed" from the common ancestor than I. So we are second cousins, twice removed because it is 3 generations back to the common ancestor for me and 5 for you. In general, two people are n-th cousins, if they have a common ancestor n+1 generations back from each of them. They are n-th cousins, m times removed, if the common ancestor is n+1 generations back for one of the cousins, and n+1+m generations back for the other. Hope this helps, Marv millerm@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/millerm Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 10:52:30 -0700 From: "Cole, Janet L - CFC" <Cole.Janet@cfwy.com> Subject: Kersey Family ...wonder if you could explain the concepts of: second (3rd, 4th, etc.) cousin , cousin once (twice, thrice etc.) removed .... GGGrandaughter of Mabry & > Hettie. Marv, Thanks for answering my e mail. I am very new at this and I do not understand how the rings work, etc. Here is some info that I have. I would be interested in knowing if this is correct. Ridgeley Simpers from Maryland did research for 35 years on this paper work that I have. He was married to Doris York. Supposedly Hetty/Hester Kersey was a 5th cousin of Mary Eunice Harlan born 9/25/1846 married Robert Todd Lincoln born 8/1/1843, son of Pres. Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln. Esther "Hettie" was the dau. of William Kersey,1791 2/3/1890, N.C. and Elizabeth Betsy Lane 1791 after 1850 Census. Williams parents were Eleazer 8/27/1762 6/1/1816 married Elizabeth Harlan 12 July 1784 in Randolph, Co. N.C. Elizabeth Harlan born June 1762, Chester, CO. Pa. died 2/27/1845. After than I have William Kersey Sr. married to Hannah Hunt, and then John Kersey married to Lois Harris or Harry and the last one was a Kersey that arrived in Phila. 17 of July 1684 on the Vine?Line? of Liverpool" I have never corresponded with anyone over the net. After I put the message on the net I started some more research and I found this at www.familysearch.org. .I found this by typing in Asenath York born 1848 Guilford Co. N.C. Father Marberry York and Mother Mrs. Esther York, but did not have Kersey on this one. Esther supposedly moved to Carroll Co. Va. after Mabry was killed which was 1862 63 or 64. Thanks again. Ruby York White. The man that did the research on this died in Jan after finding out in Nov that he had cancer. I am going to a reunion on the 3lst of this month and I will check with my cousin to see if he knew anything about the Kerseys on this paper.
