#2. New member wonders where Kerseys are originally from? - from Marv Miller

Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 08:22:45 -0700 From: "Marv Miller" <millerm@halcyon.com> Subject: New member wonders where Kerseys are originally from? Hi Debra-- You have asked the $64 question. We have all wondered at one time or another where all these Kerseys came from and when. It's certain there have been Kerseys in England and Scotland for a long time. The English and Scots were in Ireland in the 1600s and 1700s, so that could explain the Irish immigrants. I have seen records of a few German Kerseys immigrating to America in the 1800s. I don't know if they were English and went to Germany, Germans who anglicized their names, or what. There were Kerseys in various places in America in the 1600s and early 1700s. I haven't seen any firm information to tie today's Kerseys to those early immigrants. For instance the Quaker Kersey lines, such as my own, have a legend that they are descended from John Kersey the English mathematician and his son the lexicographer. That may well be true, but I haven't seen the proof. So we all just keep looking. You win this week's prize for tying together the most loose ends. ;-) From your information I figured out that I had William Jackson Kersey in my database three different times -- once as William, once as William J., and once as William Jackson! I also had the marriages of Lillie Kersey to George W. Benton (21 Jul 1922, Wakulla Co., FL) and Elbert Kersey to Blanche Langston (22 May 1928, Leon Co., FL) without knowing their parents. I am repeating a couple of earlier e-mails on this family. Notice that Jesse appears in the 1900 census as William J., presumably William Jesse and Bertie shows up as Birdie. As for other descendants of William Kersey and Mary Scarbrough, Larry Kersey, EAGLESNEST@SkyBest.Com, Rose, TOMNROSEJ@aol.com, and Bill Moore, zebsdad@lvdi.net, are active on the list. #9. Grant Kersey - from Joe Kersey
Top
Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 22:03:36 -0500 From: "Joe Kersey" <jakersey@erols.com> Subject: Grant Kersey Dear Judy: Grant Kersey was born in Upson County, the son of Charles Austin Kersey and Virginia Traylor Kersey. At some time in the l920's he moved to Florida to work in the citrus industry (the Georgia Kerseys of my family were peach growers). About 1930, Grant Kersey married Frances Roberts of Thomaston, Ga. The marriage was unsuccessful for she didn't like living in Florida. And Thus, they were divorced. In the 1930's Grant became a citrus buyer for a Boston commodity merchant named E.Fitz and Co. In this job he was quite successful and became fairly affluent. At some point he began putting together his own citrus groves and continued in this business until sometime in the 1950's when he decided to retire. He sold all of his groves which were then converted to housing in Seminole, Fla. Maps show a Kersey Lake in Seminole which was in the original orange groves. Grant remarried a divorcee whose name was Margaret but I do not know her last name. At that time, he lived in Clearwater, Florida. Rather amazingly, I still remember his street address: 1108 Grove Street. I was stationed for a short time in Clearwater and my wife stayed with Grant and Margaret during this time. Margaret died sometime in the early 1960's (cancer). Grant died sometime later but I don't remember the year. He was a heavy cigar smoker which agrees with you description of him as your mother remembers. But, I do not believe he ever lived in Decatur, Ga. I believe Mary Wolf was wrong in saying that he was buried in Perry,Georgia. By that time, he had no living siblings living in the Perry area. It is more likely that he either was buried in Florida or cremated. Sorry to say, but he was probably not the Grant Kersey your mother remembers. Ask her this question: Did he walk with a limp due to one leg being shorter that the other? It was a noticeable limp and she would remember it I think. Joe Kersey jakersey@erols.com

Date: Wed, 4 Aug 1999 23:03:34 -0400 From: Ilona Kersey <ijk@gte.net> Subject: Ilona Jean Kersey - New to List Hi, just a friendly hello to the list. My name is Ilona Jean Kersey and I'm currently in Orlando, Florida. I'm *just* starting out researching my family tree. I have very little information to go by ... a hand drawn piece of paper from my grandmother Betty Kersey (nee Stark) ... My grandfather was Beverly Boyart Kersey and was born in the Tampa area, his father was George Kersey and was married to Minnie Crouson, both from the Tampa area, and his parents were from Georgia. So, i guess i'm starting out by acquiring some birth and death certificates from Vital Statistics and get some exact dates and such. I'm searching the web for starting points and found this list. Greetings y'all! :) ijk ICQ# 45580805 AIM: meow1967 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------------------------- <gump> ... and that's all i've got to say about that! </gump> STOP KITTY PORN!!! http://home1.gte.net/ijk

I have found a old friend that is as into this stuff as I am. I really didn't know how much stuff could be found in a NC Library about Emanuel Co Georgia. Whoa do I feel stupid. But I had a ball last night at the library. My line is from Richard G. Kersey and I found where his wife is buried, also I proved that the Richard Kersey that I thought had joined the Confederate Army on July 3,1861 and was surrendered on April 9,1865 at Appomatix was NOT my Richard G.Kersey. So now I'm back to square one. Which is okay cause I'm really having a good time doing it. I do need some help though, On the 1860 census Susannah Kersey is listed as being w/o Richard G. Kersey. What does this mean? Was he dead in 1860? Or did he leave his family or what? I really don't know where to look. Is there any ideas? I also found a Kersey Cemetery in Emanuel Co Ga. I believe that the Susan Kersey buried there is my GGGrandmother. The dates are right. Below is what I found: Kersey Cemetery From the center of Swainsboro go NW 9 mile on GA 57. Turn left onto Cow Ford Road and go 3.2 miles. Turn left onto Keith Screws Road and go 0.1 mile. Turn left onto a trail that leads to the cemetery (0.4 mile) Claudy Beule Jones Born Dec 28,1895 Died Jan 7,1896 Cordy C. Kersey Born Sep 18,1893 Died Feb 21,1898 John A. I think we all tend to make two assumptions which are usually false about submitting things to the list: 1. Everybody has already heard this information 2. No one would be interested unless it pertains to their direct line For the first assumption, there are new people all the time on the list, so even if it is old information it won't hurt to repeat it. If someone is really worried about repeating, the old digests are all on my web page and the search function can be used to check. For the second assumption, no one will know whether the information is important if they don't see it! So let's all lighten up and post that data we've been hiding. ;-) Marv millerm@halcyon.com http://www.halcyon.com/millerm Date: Sat, 7 Aug 1999 16:02:34 EDT From: PETENOEL@aol.com Subject: Re: Ilona Jean Kersey - New to List Hi Marv....and Attn llona Jean. .... made a huge assumption when i joined the list....to wit, this research was already in your hands. ....
