"Kersey Cloth" was a type of linen that was made in the village of Kersey, UK. The first reports that I heard said that it was a kind of coarse linen used for sails on small boats but then I heard that it was also used for clothing as well. I went to the village of Kersey, In the UK and they had a pottery still run by the Kersey family but the cloth mill had been gone for a very long time. Talked to one very old timer there and he seemed to recall someone mentioning it but nothing directly. This was in 1976. Had the pottery throw a pot for me and put their mark on it and my name and date as well. Figured I sure wouldn't ever get "that" chance again. The lamp is a treasured part of the family now. Have pictures of the village as well and it is still an old fashioned English village. That is all that I know about it right now. If anyone else has anything to add I would be interested in learning more. Dan Kersey -- Dan Kersey † "Cash Register tune: Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching! Now you're a richer person by three smiles!!" I will try to scan the sheets (3) of pages and get them to the group as soon as I can. I ordered Kersey Cloth from Pennsylvania and made my children afgans, also had the Kersey crest embroidered and appliqued to them. Used the crest to make pillows for cousins and uncle. If I can get a decent picture of one of these I will send that also. Have a wonderful New year, and again thanks for all that you do for the group. Sue

It was very charming in Kersey, England. There were many of what I call 'tudor houses' with the heavy brown wood outlining whitewashed cement. We had lunch in the pub at the top of the hill. It was all dark oak inside. We sat in the back garden as we had young children then and they weren't allowed inside. I have a plack from there and I will see if Danie can scan it into the computer and send it to you. There use to be a lot of sheep around there and many mills, but now I don't know if they are working. -- Dan Kersey † "Cash Register tune: Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching! Do you >think we might have the same person here? Hi Marv: Yes I do think we have a match. Susan had lots of family in the Appling & Telfair Co. area, so she could very well have been married there. I haven't done any research on the Carters or Kerseys yet, so I can't say for sure. My next line of inquiry w/ this bunch will be a look in the books "Wiregrass Obituaries and Death Notices" by Wayne and Judy Dasher (in 5 volumes), to see what clues I could find about the Carters. I am hampered in my research by geography (I'm in Oregon, most of the books & records I need are in GA), so I don't know when I'll be able to come up w/ more definitive proof. I just copied 800 pages of research by a cousin, so maybe some details will turn up there. I am very interested in the Kerseys you listed, if they are indeed McEachin descendents. Will stay in touch, Jeffrey

Date: Fri, 31 Dec 1999 00:18:36 EST From: AllysonMT@aol.com Subject: Re: Kerseys in War of 1812 Marvin -- Thanks for the great tip on the War of 1812 site. There were 3 Kerseys living in Ohio at that time, all of whom have names of my latter Kerseys, and whom I suspect to be brothers of my Samuel Kersey (Muskingum & Marion Counties). I find no early Kerseys in the census except for Joseph in Washington County, 1810. Where are these other 3 Kerseys? If they are sons of Joseph, they don't appear on the 1810 census. Does anyone know of the whereabouts of a census index for Ohio for 1820? 1800? Does anyone know how to find information about which Kerseys might have settled first in Ohio and where? Many thanks!! I just don't seem to want to do any right now. I still have a strong interest in all the family that I can find, but I just don't want to look right now. I get real frustrated because I need to go to Swainsboro Ga. to do some records searching and I can't seem to get there! Life is always throwing curves huh? I'm stuck on Richard G. Kersey and it just drives me crazy. Also his son Rowan Kersey who married Nancy Johns I can't find him on the census after 1860. I know where he is buried, but I need to know more about his life. He was my Greatgrandfather and I even get mad sometimes because the Kersey's were so closed mouthed. I know that I sound crazy and yes I am! Ha! After all I am a Kersey! Thank-you all for all the help you have given me in the past and I hope everyone had a Wonderful Christmas and a even better New Year. Thanks for letting me sound off. Cathy Kersey Phipps
