Top
From: The Earles, theearles@roadrunner.nf.net To: Kersey group Sent: Sunday, January 16, 2000 2:43 PM Subject: Maurice Kearsey Still searching for info on Maurice or Morris Kearsey. He was born 1815 in County Wexford. He married Johanna McNulty(born 1818) in Ireland. Their children were Mary, Patrick, Maurice, John, and Thomas. Only Patrick had children. All of the children lived and died in Cape Broyle, Newfoundland, Canada (well, it wasn't part of Canada at the time!). Family stories say Maurice and Johanna were heading for Virginia when they were shipwrecked off the coast of Newfoundland and so they settled here. Any connections, please let me know! Raelene Earle

His land in Wilcox Co., AL was bounty land for his service in the war. He lived in SC until 1850 and then received the bounty land and moved to AL. Is there anyone else out there searching this line? I truly love to see all the emails and "finds" on the list. I'm writing in response to the email from Ruth in Illinois about her theory on the Kersey men from Emanuel Co. I agree that Richard G., Elija, John B., and Thomas could be brothers and yes John age 66 could be there father. But so far no one has found any proof or even a trace of a link. I feel that there is something we could all do or somewhere we could look or some type of document we could find that may prove the connection. Does anyone have any idea's? Richard G. Kersey is my line and I would just give anything to find out more about him. If I go to Emanuel County where would I look and what do I look for? HA! I think I have finally lost it on family research, but I'm ready to go to Georgia if anyone has any idea's. Cathy Kersey Phipps

Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 19:14:19 PST From: "Paula Sowash" <p_sowash@hotmail.com> Subject: Kersey's I am looking for informaion on my grandfather's family. I have just recently started looking for information. I didn't know either of my grandparents. My grandfather was James Brison Kersey. I don't know where he was born but his birthdate was 12/04/1907. He had several siblings thirteen in all I believe. I don't know many of them though. He had twin sisters...Era who died while living in Clear Lake City, Texas I believe. Her twin was Vera (Peg) who lived for as long as I know her whole life in Daingerfield, Texas. He had a sister Mattie Mae who traveled around alot and was the wild one of the bunch. She married several times. She is still living but I'm afraid not much help. I'm not sure but I believe he had another sister, Susie who lived in Cason, Texas or the Daingerfield area somewhere. James Brison Kersey married Essie Mae Jordan 12/25/1927 in Morris County, Texas. I am waiting on the records of their marriage for some information. The had the following children: Robert who married Deva ? they currently live in Daingerfield, Texas Nevell who married Gail ? he was shot to death in Daingerfield Ruby LaVerne Kersey Lindley (Sissy) b. sometime in May 1930? who married George Lindley they lived in Daingerfield all of their lives George owned the barber shop in the town. Brenda Gwyn Kersey Weatherford who is my mother. She was born in Gilmer, Texas, Feb. 8, 1948 and due to her mother's death was passed from family memeber to family member until finally settling down with "Sissy" and George. That is pretty much all of the information I have as far as my Grandfather goes. I have tons on my Grandmother. I am searching for my grandfathers parents information. Names, places, dates, parents, etc. If you have anything would you please send me what you may have. If it helps I have been told through my family that one of my grandfathers relatives owned the largest plantation in Macon Co. Georgia. I am trying to get more information on this part of my family history. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I haven't done any geneology work except for the beginning of my search for my greatgrandmother's information. #50. G.W. and Margaret Kersey - from Jerry D. Walker
Top
Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2000 22:12:31 -0600 From: "Jerry D. Walker" <jwalker@vvm.com> Subject: G.W. and Margaret Kersey Al, I have some information on Melton Kersey, but very little on G.W. Kersey. Melton was my father's, mother's, father. G.W. and Margaret Kersey are listed as Melton's parents on Melton's son Joseph's application for inclusion to membership in the Cherokee Nation. A copy of this application was furnished by a fellow Kersey List subscriber (Thanks again, Troy). The application confirms that Melton was born in Goliad County. The following is a slightly edited version of an earlier posting I made to the Kersey List: I am Jerry Walker, jwalker@vvm.com . My great grandparents were Melton Douglas (M.D.) Kersey (I have been told that Melton was his mothers maiden name), and Leana (Cox) Kersey. M.D. Kersey was born in South Texas(a relative desciption??) on March 28, 1856. They were married July 5, 1881, in Lampasas County, Texas. After their marriage, they lived near San Saba, Texas until at least 1892. They moved to the Oklahoma Indian Territory near Ardmore Oklahoma sometime before May 1898. M.D. staked a claim near in Tillman County, near Manitou, Oklahoma in December,1901. Source: Lists enclosed in William Alfred Walker and Rosa Lee (Kersey) Walker - Family Bible. Melton Douglas (M.D.) Kersey and Leana (Cox) Kersey had eleven children: 1. Joseph M. Kersey, 2. Maggie V. Kersey, 3. Thomas Andrew(or Andrew Thomas) Kersey, 4. Ina Mae Kersey, 5. Rosa Lee Kersey (my grandmother), 6. Cassie E. Kersey, 7. Emma D. Kersey, 8. Alvin Kersey, 9. Alvis Kersey, 10. Asa E. Kersey, and 11. L.E. (Mutt) Kersey. Alvin O. (Oscar) Kersey and Alvis A. Kersey were twins. Both were born 7/26/1900. Alvis A. Kersey died as an infant (12/10/1900). I have a record of one brother of Melton D. - Elgin Kersey - B ?? D. - March 1, 1949. and Louis Kersey, born February 7, 1910, relationship unknown. Family tradition holds that M.D. Kersey was a cowboy before he got married and settled down. He is supposed to have worked for a well known cattleman of the time. Leana (Cox) Kersey's parrents were married in 1852 in Gonzales, Texas. M.D. Kersey may or may not have come from that area of the state. I am interested in information concerning this Kersey line, and/or communicating with other descendents of M.D. Kersey. -----Original Message----- From: millerm@halcyon.com <millerm@halcyon.com> To: Kersey List <millerm@halcyon.com> Date: Sunday, January 16, 2000 12:32 AM Subject: Kersey Fw: list > > >++Kersey Family History and Genealogy Discussion List++ > >From: Al Kersey, a56ek@brightok.net >To: Kersey Digest >Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2000 6:27 PM >Subject: list > > >Thank you Marv. Kersey I know this is quite long..but very interesting, especially if Thomas J. is your line. There is alot more on the history, but this was the only one that contained a Kersey. Janas SOURCE: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889. Contributed by Michael Brown. History of Benton County SEBASTIAN COUNTY. page 1334 Thomas J. Kersey (deceased) was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Sebastian County, Ark., and was born in Davidson County, Tenn., [p.1334] in 1819. At an early day he came to the State of Arkansas and settled in Logan County, where he was married to Peggy A. Shelby, who afterward died, having borne two children: Jane, widow of L. Gee, and George Huston, who was eighteen years old at the time of his death. In 1847 Mr. Kersey was married to Mary Ann Williford, who was born in Montgomery County. Ill., the daughter of Jordan and Sarah J. Williford. Mrs. Kersey came to Arkansas when only thirteen years old, and was married to Thomas Kersey at the age of fifteen. She is the mother of fifteen children, only four of whom lived to be grown Amanda V., who married, during the war. Mr. A. J. Fry, and was the mother of six children, four boys of whom are living, Grant, Charles, Baty and Mathew; the two youngest are living with their Grandma Kersey, their mother having died when the youngest, Mathew, was only one year old; Baty, who is now thirteen years of age, has lived with his Grandpa since last May, his father having died; the other two are grown. The next child of Thomas Kersey, a son. I. N. Kersey, died when twenty-one years of age; he was an excellent young man in every way, and was much beloved by all who knew him: he was a student of Cane Hill College, Washington County, Ark., and would have graduated the spring he died. A daughter, Mollie, was married very young to Dr. N. D. Woods, Jr.; she is the mother of four children: Mary E., Susie, George Newton and Annie Tribue, the first and last of whom are living. Georgia is the wife of A. J. Chandler. Of these four children, who lived to maturity, only two are living: Mollie Woods and Georgia Chandler. Thomas J. Kersey made a trip to California in 1849 with the long train of gold seekers, and was absent fifteen months, meeting with good success and returning with a large amount of gold. Soon after coming back his dwelling was set on fire at night during the absence of the family, and a heavy loss sustained. He suffered considerably by fire (having been burned out three times— once losing a hotel), but this only increased his determination to accumulate more property. Mr. Kersey was for many years one of the foremost citizens of Greenwood, and was ever ready to assist all laudable public enterprises, and was largely interested in a dry goods store, and owned a mill in the town. He was known throughout Western Arkansas for his honesty, integrity and liberality, and although uneducated, save by his own exertions, was a man of powerful mind and good judgment. He was successful in all his business enterprises, a man of quick perceptions, and possessed considerable personal magnetism, which drew around him a large circle of friends. He was for many years a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and was one of its most liberal supporters. He was a member of the A. F. & A. M., Lodge No. 131, and was buried by the members of his lodge with impressive ceremonies. He commenced life a poor man, but at his death, October 11, 1888, was a large land-holder, and possessed a large amount of personal property. Of keen observation, he absorbed a great deal by travel, and for fifteen months, when a young man, lived in Texas among the Indians. His house was the home of the orphan, and he partly reared five orphan children. Mrs. Kersey has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, since she was thirteen years of age.

My greatgrandfather was Paul Kersey, Son of Pinke Elijah Kersey...our family has him as "Charlie" Pink...however, the information matches mine perfectly. Also, I believe that the records of Paul Kersey are incorrect even with the SSDI. They all show his birth year as 1896 however, that would put him 11 when my grandfather was born...ha ha ha. But it definitley has been confirmed that this is the same man. My greatgrandmother died in January 1969 and my greatgrandfather died the same year. All of the records show that he is the same Paul with the recorded birth year of 1896. I really appreciate the help too and I will keep in touch and if you'd like I can update all of the information. He has no information on the email you sent me other than his birthdate. He had 12 children and we have a large crew that will complete up to date. I would understand if you want documents proving that these are the same man and if you'd like when I receive them ALL I'll be happy to forward the information. (DAR lists this name as Kersey. Age 14y.???.) THRAILKILL This large, beautiful cemetery overlooks one of the large streams of the county called Pipe Creek. It is now owned by the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Swayzee. The name of Thrailkill is an old one in this vicinity. A family by the name having lived across the road many years ago. Inquiry has not yet verified the idea that it received its name from this family but is generally accepted as true. The earliest date on a stone is Aug. 18, 1850 - Abraham Grindle son of Samuel Grindle who came to the township in 1849 or 1850. Whitson's History says, "Among the first deaths in the county were a child of Madison Allen, who was the first person buried in the Thrailkill Cemetery and a child of John Galbreath and a child of W. Francis Smith." This cemetery is in Section #2 of Sims Township on State Road #13. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.

He went to Illinois with his parents in 1845 and for some time was employed as a driver of one of the big four-horse coaches that ran between Chicago and other large towns. He married first, Jane Shaw, at Marengo, Ill., July 3, 1848. Soon after this he went over the plains to California, but soon returned for his family and permanently settled there. After this he became a farmer and resided near Chico, where his wife died Feb. 19, 1886. He married second, Mrs. Harriet Emeline Kersey. He died Sept. 9. 1904. The following quotation is taken from his obituary notice in the Record: "Death has claimed another pioneer of Butte County in the person of D. D. Richardson, who died yesterday at his home a few miles north of Chico. As noted in yesterday's Record, Mr. Richardson was stricken with paralysis and from the first but little hone was entertained of his recovery. * * * Deceased was one of the oldest residents of the vicinity of Chico, where he had engaged in farming for many years and where he had reared his family. * * * He was a good citizen and respected man, and his passing marked the end of a long and useful life." They had six children: i. AMANDA, born in McHenry Co., Ill., Jan. 27, 1850, married Jefferson A. Walker Feb. 18, 1868. It is not on a train line so would have to be approached by car. It is about 60 miles north east of London, west of the town of Ipswich. If you have a map of England it is roughly directly above Colchester (Essex) and directly west of Ipswich, where the two lines would intersect. Hope that this helps, sorry but the weather will be real dreary in February but Kersey is a wonderful little place, as is the village of Clare which is my mothers name (Clare Kersey).
