Date: Wed, 26 Jan 2000 07:02:57 -0600 From: Jean Grave <gravell@bsc.net> Subject: Re: Kersey Looks as though we are related. My husband's great+ grandfathers in Christiana were Samuel Gregg, George Harlan, Joseph Robinson, Samuel Greave, Joshua Hadley, William Dixon and possibly more that I do not think of at the moment. The name was Greave when they came over and remained so for the first 3 generations. They then dropped the "e", possibly because people were pronouncing it "grieve" and it became Grave. This it remained. Some of the descendants added an "s" and others did not. I find some in cemeteries with large tombstones that say Grave and then their 3 sons are buried as Graves. Very confusing. As you can see, my husband retained the name Grave. Almost everyone adds an "s" to our name too. As for Rubottom (Rhubottom), I have run into that a couple of times. Samuel Dowd married Hannah Rubottom in Chatham, NC. His mother was Mary Greave of Christiana. In my book I have a lot of Kirks and Hollingsworths. One of ours was Amor Hollingsworth. I completely forgot about Swithin Chandler. He was also my husband's grandfather. Samuel Greave had 5 children. The first, Martha, married Jacob Chandler, Samuel married his 1st cousin, Sidney Wynne, William died young, John married Jane Chandler and Jonathan married Sarah Chandler. All three Chandlers were children of Swithin & Ann. By this one would think that there were no other choices nearby. Jacob, son of Jonathan & Sarah Chandler, sold the Greave land to E I duPont when they all left Christiana Hundred for Wayne Co, IN, and I have a promissary note from duPont to Jacob. Jacob was Doc's (my husband) ggg grandfather. Have a nice day! Jean C Grave Marv Miller wrote: > Hello Jean-- > > Thanks so much for your query. How interesting to hear from you. #25. Re: THRAILKILL Cemetery- Kersey (In.) - from JANASM@aol.com
Top
Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2000 15:54:03 EST From: JANASM@aol.com Subject: Re: THRAILKILL Cemetery- Kersey (In.) Hi Barbara, This is what was on the page where I saw the information. It is located in Indiana. http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/data/in+index+63331556935+F - This is the address that I found it at. Janas THRAILKILL This large, beautiful cemetery overlooks one of the large streams of the county called Pipe Creek. It is now owned by the I.O.O.F. Lodge of Swayzee. The name of Thrailkill is an old one in this vicinity. A family by the name having lived across the road many years ago. Inquiry has not yet verified the idea that it received its name from this family but is generally accepted as true. The earliest date on a stone is Aug. 18, 1850 - Abraham Grindle son of Samuel Grindle who came to the township in 1849 or 1850. Whitson's History says, "Among the first deaths in the county were a child of Madison Allen, who was the first person buried in the Thrailkill Cemetery and a child of John Galbreath and a child of W. Francis Smith." This cemetery is in Section #2 of Sims Township on State Road #13. The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's. The grave of Abraham Grindle son of S. & M.A. Grindle is still in the old section of this cemetery. He died Aug. 18, 1850 aged 4m.2d. This is the earliest grave I found in this cemetery. As of October 1994, every stone was read in the entire cemetery. This cemetery has been worked on more than once. In the old section there are indications, at some point in time, this cemetery was almost destroyed. In many places, the gravestones are set in cement. They are placed in rows of like names and possibly of families. I believe this was done back in the early 1900's due to the appearance of the cement. The current caretaker told me that in the last few years he had repaired and reset many stones. I was very impressed with the care given to this old cemetery. It is still in use today. The township provides the trustee with the funds to keep up the maintenance and care of this cemetery. There is still plenty of room for expansion. Three sides are bordered by farmland, with State Road #13 bordering the west side. On July 4, 1910 the GAR erected a monument in the center of this cemetery: "In Loving Remembrance of our dead and living heroes of the War of 1861 - 1865" I attempted to read this cemetery in sections, that I created, as their was no designations of areas on the plat map. The map on the following page of this book will help you locate the area of the grave you seek. I didn't attempt to read these in rows for in some places this would have been impossible. The spelling is exactly as I found it on the stones.

Fairfax police located the car and discovered that in fact there was a body in the car. Police determined that the victim had been killed in Spotsylvania County (about 60 miles south of Washington). Now I will quote from the news item. "Major Howard Smith, of the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's office, identified the victim as Lawrence Matthew Kersey IV, 21, of Caroline County. Kersey was an acquaintance of both occupants of the car who have been charged with first-degree murder and robbery, he said." Each of the bi-passes went around at least 2 blockages. I amthakful to God that is alive. Most of mother's leg has healed. She had to be cut from the top of her leg down to her ankle. The very bottom part is right where she bends her ankle. That part has taken a long time healing. The other part is at the top. It has had a hole the size of a quarter at times but it is finally healing. The home healthcare nurses come every day and dress it for her. They have been wonderful. Her age has also been a factor in her slow recovery. She was almost ready to be on her own when she came down with the flu. (I had stayed with her from the time that she got home.) She got the flu during Christmas probably from my grandchildren who also had the flu. She was very sick for over two weeks. She has stayed by herself for the last two weeks. She not been able to get out and walk as she should because of our winter weather, ice, snow etc. She says that she had known that something was wrong for a long time before the heart attack. I will soon have another grandchild in February. I watched a video today of a Kersey reunion that took place about 12 years ago in Brunswich GA. Two of mother's brothers were there. Mother, Daddy, my sister, and many cousins were there. I just wish that we all didn't live so far away from each other so that we could have time to sit down and talk to each other. Mary Wolfe

He was just in the magazine and I thought I would post it. You might look in the library for Rosters of Revolutionary War Soldiers from Virginia and under Dillards List. Like a Patriots list or something like that. Also the name is Rose Jones and not Tom Rose. My husbands name is Tom and mine is Rose. Rose Jones

From: <Destadyal@aol.com> To: <millerm@halcyon.com> Sent: Saturday, January 29, 2000 4:27 PM Subject: kersey Recently I met Doris Buffum in Pensacola and found reference to some Kersey ancestors in material from you. Did the Kersey book or books that were mentioned ever turn up? My name is Desta Casey Dyal and my grandmother Pocahontas Emma Kersey married Louis or Lewis Thompson in Florida. We think her father was Steven Atkinson Kersey who is shown on one census as a physician. Do any of these names appear in your records?
