Notes on Reference Numbers

The reference numbers used for each individual in these data are based on the ahnentafel numbering system. In this system the number assigned to an individual's father is twice the number assigned to the individual, and the number assigned to an individual's mother is twice plus one. There are currently four starting points in this database. My daughter, Teresa Katherine Miller, is number one. Josiah Bartlett is designated "b1" and all his ancestors and descendants have a "b" in front of their reference numbers. Similarly, Franklin Pierce, is designated "c1", and his relatives have a "c" prefix. Thomas Clayton (d. 6 Apr 1666) is designated X6004. I have detached this erroneous lineage from William Clayton (3002).

Descendants of direct ancestors have letter sequences appended to the ancestor's ahnentafel number to indicate their lineages. For example, Lois Kersey (368BBc) is a descendant of Teresa's direct ancestor, William Kersey (368). Her line of descent is William (368), Amos Kersey (368B), Isaac Kersey (368BB), Lois (368BBc). "B" in these sequences denotes the second child, "c" the third child, etc. A capital letter denotes a male child, lowercase indicates a female child.

Spouses not in the direct line of ancestry are denoted by parenthetical numbers. Dinah Beeson, the first spouse of Amos Kersey (368B), is 368B(1). Elizabeth Wilson, the second spouse of Amos, is 368B(2). Ancestors of spouses are given ahnentafel numbers relative to the spouse. Thus James Wilson, the father of Elizabeth Wilson, second wife of Amos, is 368B(2)2.

The foregoing discussion applies to manually generated reference numbers. There is a second set of reference numbers generated automatically via software. These numbers all begin with an "A". They start from my daughter as "A1" and follow the rules outlined above. All of the Josiah Bartlett and Franklin Pierce ancestry is covered by this automatic generation because it turns out they are all connected to Teresa by marriage. Sadly for my project to confirm family legends, I have not been able to find any direct linkage to either Bartlett or Pierce.
