Hi, I will be a frequent visitor. Have a Corvair conversion in the works, just changed the plane from Buttercup to 601XL after a month in hospital with gasoline burns (VW van and gas can). Want fuel in low wings. Also, WW making all that good stuff can't hurt my building speed. Am 69, so will work from a kit (fastbuild if I can talk the wife into the extra $9000) John Colins, oldguyflier@yahoo.com

Hello Kevin. Lance Gingell gave me your web URL as a reference for plans building the 601. You're making it look easy! Like I told Lance, I'm a private pilot with an instrument rating and used to be a member of a local club with 5 aircraft - 172's, Archer, 182 and 210. However, after wife quit working, we bought a bigger home, had two kids and put them in our local Catholic school I basically have nothing left of my income to pursue my interests :-(. Appears that you've managed to get started on your project before coming to those cross roads so be thankful. Once you finish you won't have to sacrifice your hobby. Anyway, just wanted to get your thoughts on going with plans building. Do you find it to be a rewarding experience or more hassle than the savings is worth. Also, how did you like the comfort, feel, handling and performance of the demo? I sat in the Zenith demo and a couple of the LSA versions at Airventure this year but did not get a demo ride so I'm blind relative to flying characteristics. I'm 6'2", 215 lb but the cabin seemed to have adequate hip, shoulder and head room. Every day I find myself daydreaming about building and can hardly resist sending of the payment for a set of plans. Just wanted to get some input from someone with personal experience before committing. So, please reply with your impressions and thoughts about the product, company and process to date - you could be an advocate for another 601XL sale! Thanks again Kevin. Best regards and good luck on continued building success. Jerry "Sonny" Webster Flushing, MI sunmanav8@sbcglobal.net

Excellent photos and history. This is the first time I've understood that the Corvair engine is turned backwards. Stupid me, I thought that a new crankshaft came out of the front of the engine. Now the pictures I have seen on Pat Panzera's web site make sense. Rob Hansen Still planning to start a 601 XL

Kevin: I like your idea of using cold steel angle in a forming brake as a "die" of sorts to form the 1/8" radius. I have access to a large brake and would like to run an experiment to see if I too could go this route. Two questions: 1) what was the thickness of the cold steel angle that you used; and 2) what is the thickness of the aluminum for the 601XL's main spar/rear spar? thanks. Richard E. I orginally found your site by following the lead for the table you built (you provided the link in the Zenith List). But I am intrigued by your engine choice too. I have WW's manual for converting the Corvair engine; I have the engine (much rougher exterior than the one in your pictures); and I am negotiating with an individual for a 601 XL kit. At any rate. Kevin, Looks like the old college try is working pretty good for you. I am seriously thinking about scratch building the CH-701 and even though they are two different aircraft, the process is the same. How do you make the flanges on the lighting holes for the bulk heads, ribs ect? Also, in general, what is your take on the complexity of building from scratch? From what I see on your web site, you've got a handle on it! Good work and thanks for the inspriation. Robert, My personal e-mail address is: safetybob13@yahoo.com

Kevin, I have contacted you by e-mail once before. I too am building a 601. Anyhow, I screwed up a 6b1-7 of my kit. You owe me nothing and a no is ok however I need to ask. Do you have a break that can bend me another part? If so would you mind doing it or helping one evening? It is this or order another from Zenith. I have asked one other builder and have yet to hear so . . .. Also, I have contacted some builders locally of Zenith air craft to see if they would like to meet for a burger one evening. Would you have any interest? I am not interested in builing a club or anything like that. There appears to be around 4 or 5 in the general area. Thanks for your time. Hello, Kevin. Very intresting site and a very good job. I'm from Brazil and I was luking about corvair converted engines comments, whem I saw your site. I built a Hapi canard Dragonfly, 15 years ago with a 60 hp VW converted engine, and now, I am planning to upgrade it with a stronger engine, and one idea is to use a corvair because others are very expensive. Can you tell me if it is a good engine as I think, and if it is possible yet to buy a good core and safety parts in USA today. I uould like to have your comments to francisco.p.lacerda@gmail.com.
