Lorene McLaughlin met Kevin Zakrewski while they were both school
teachers in the town of Farmington, Connecticut. Knowing that he was
becoming very attracted to her, Kevin asked Lorene that life altering
question that would ultimately shape their future. “Do you like dogs?” “I have a Shepard/Husky mix
named Kia,” was the reply. The love affair began. Our first date was a
romantic picnic by the Farmington River with Kia and Sheba,
Kevin’s Shepard/Doberman mix. The pooches hit it off immediately. They
later accompanied us on our honeymoon to Niagara Falls and onto Lake
Bomoseen in Vermont, the present home of Mountain Lake Leo’s. Kevin’s folks owned a nice cabin right on the lake. We have since
rebuilt and are now living in our dream environment. Prior to permanently
moving here from Terryville, Connecticut in 2005 we have been blessed with
some wonderful dogs.
After Kia and Sheba passed over the Rainbow Bridge, 2 more dogs
entered our life.
Tucker an extremely
dedicated Landseer and Szasha a black Newfoundland. They provided us with much love and
devotion. Within a short time were joined by Gage,
a goofy and fun loving Great Dane. Tucker was diagnosed with bone cancer
and passed at the age of 5. Szasha had severe hip dysplasia and underwent
surgery on both hips at an early age and managed to live until the age of
6. They have since joined Kia and Sheba in the fields of heaven above
living pain free and happy. Gage lived to be about 9 years old. He lived
his life with Tucker and Szasha and was later joined by Shaboo, a sweet Landseer. Kayla joined the family in 2003. In 2004 Max, a Saint Bernard, was rescued from a divorced couple. Reuben another Landseer from Shaboo’s breeder Kloofbear joined us in January of 2005. We enjoyed life with 5 large dogs until Gage passed on in July of 2005. Kayla being our first Leonberger was the reason for establishing Mountain Lake Leo’s. We are so impressed with Kayla’s temperament and excellent representation of the Leonberger standard that we decided to pursue the adventure of breeding her. And so the story continues…..
