Welcome to the website of Northwood High School--class of 1959. As we approach the 50th anniversary of our graduation, we are attempting to reach as many of our classmates as possible. Our ability to reach you in the future depends on the information we have from you. We encourage you to click on the "Questionnaire" button on the lower left and use that as a guide when emailing us your information.
In the near future, we hope to add a message board for anyone to make announcements.
As many of you know, Northwood reopened a couple years ago--20 years after it closed. For details, click on this link http://www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/northwoodhs/
We were asked by the current Northwood administration for a representative from the class of 1959 to attend the first graduation of the new Northwood. Evelyn Koutsos Ross volunteered to be our representative and furnished us with the following report:
"Continuing the Legacy" was the theme for graduation of the Northwood Class of 2008, its first graduating class since Northwood's closure in 1985. Consequently, a representative from each class 1958-1985 was invited by Principal Johnson to be present, to wear a black gown and red carnation, to process in and out, and to stand as a group at the DAR Constitution Hall on June 2, 2008. Larry Michael, Northwood Class of ''74 and the "Voice of the Washington Redskins" was the guest speaker. Photographer Annie Leibovitz, Class of ' 67, was mentioned as a Northwood alumna.
Principals of the elementary schools (Arcola, Glen Haven , Kemp Mill, Highland View, Forest Knolls, Sligo Creek) and middle schools (Colonel E. Brooke Lee, Silver Spring International, and Sligo) who prepare students for Northwood were introduced and recognized for their schools' contributions to the graduates' success.
The Class of 2008 was a diverse, highly-motivated class of approximately 350 students with over 100 winning awards and scholarships; many won multiple scholarships, some as many as 7 or 8. Graduates were accepted to 77 Universities and colleges and 84 were awarded State of Maryland Certificates of Merit. It was a major celebration of achievement for them and their families. The class was known as "Johnson's Kids" and Principal Johnson hugged each student as he presented the diploma.
At the May 17 meeting at Northwood of former graduates, Vikki Kane (Class of ' 78) said Northwood's Website had a link to Northwood's Foundation (similar to BCC's) established to provide support to students and families in need at Northwood. Support of Northwood students is especially welcomed. At a recent play, there were more students participating than audience present due to parents working 2 or 3 jobs. Mentoring and/or tutoring of students by Northwood alumni would also be appreciated. Several Northwood grads from prior years are now Northwood staff members.
Conversing with Northwood alumni from other classes made me realize what a superb resource they are for locating lost members from other classes. Some have moved into their parents' home or have siblings or former neighbors still living in the Northwood environs. They are in touch or aware of the whereabouts of members from many Northwood classes. Posting each class's lost members on each class's website or in some central deposit area for cross-checking by the members of all Northwood classes would help us all to locate lost members.
