The first African American family moves into a white suburb with police guard. 

The first U.S. nuclear power plant begins operation in Shippingport, PA.

Dwight Eisenhower serves a second term as President; Richard Nixon is Vice President.

The United States launches its first satellite. 

Governor Faubus shuts down Little Rock, Arkansas, schools over desegregation; troops are

sent to protect African American students. 

NASA is formed. 

The Air Force Academy opens. 

Regular commercial jet flights begin.

Just after we graduate, Alaska and Hawaii are voted to become the 49th state, but they do
