JR

A Special Kitty

1997?-2008

Hi there! I'm JR and I am very pleased to meet you! I may be new here, but that doesn't mean I'm not the most important critter in the place. I'm certainly handsome, don't you think? My new mommy says I need to tell my story, so here goes!

I'm what's known as a "rescue". When I was about a year old, I was abandoned by my humans, along with my three sisters - Charlotte, Mia, and Emma - and another male cat who may have been our dad. We were taken in by a nice lady who works with a pet rescue group called Save a Dog, Save a Cat. Two of my sisters were going to have kittens of their own, and the nice lady had to let Charlotte have her kittens--she was too close to delivering them to make it safe to spay her then, so I also got a niece and two nephews. As soon as it was safe, the nice lady made sure none of us could ever make more kittens. Kittens are cute, of course, but there are too many pets who never get good homes, so it's better not to make more.

Emma, our dad, and my two nephews got to go to homes of their own, but Charlotte, Abigail (my niece), Mia, and I kept waiting for someone to adopt us. This wasn't really so bad, because conditions were good in our foster homes! Another nice lady took my sisters and niece to her house to foster, and my foster mom kept me. But what we really needed was homes of our own.

Every couple of weeks, our foster moms would take us to an event called "pet adoption" and we'd let people come and look at us while we tried hard to be good. Sometimes one of the other pets would be chosen by a new family, but after two years we were still waiting for our forever homes.

Finally, when I thought it would never happen, a lady who comes to every pet adoption called my foster mom and said she'd really like to take me to her house to live forever. This lady comes to the pet adoptions to take pictures of all of us who are waiting for homes, and then she puts the pictures on something called a web site so people who might adopt us can see them. Anyway, I was really excited when I found out this lady was going to be my new mom!

Now I have a family of my own, and I'm very happy! But my sisters and niece are still waiting. Maybe now that you've read my story, you'll go look at them and see if you can find a spot in your heart for them. You'll find pictures of Charlotte, Mia and Abigail on the Adopt page, along with all the other pets at SADSAC who need forever homes. And if you don't live close enough to adopt one of them, please consider a rescue pet in your area. We'll gladly give you our hearts if you'll give us a chance.

On an overcast afternoon late in May, JR made his way to the Rainbow Bridge. In January 2008 he was diagnosed with what was apparently a very aggressive form of renal failure. For the next four months, we treated his illness with daily meds and subcutaneous fluids (every other day), and the treatment made a remarkable difference to him. And then it didn't.

JR, you were absolutely the best cat, never anything but good-natured. You put up with the ever-increasing tribe of indoor cats with good grace. Of course, you had to be the boss and that was perfectly reasonable. You were the first--it was fitting that you be the boss.

I loved the way you'd talk to me and sit up like a dog begging so you could get closer to the hand stroking you. And I loved how you'd lean against me when you sat in my lap and look up into my face. I melted every time. Nobody can tell me cats don't feel love--it was there in your eyes every time I looked at you.

Goodbye, my precious boy.
