Sunshine

19??-1989

What can I say about you, my old friend?

You were the first. You were not the prettiest, or the smartest, or the cuddliest. Your voice grated on the ears. You were allergic to everything. You were old, so you didn't see well or hear well, and you had a little trouble "holding it".

But you were the friendliest dog I've ever known. You loved the whole world, and the world loved you back. You were especially drawn to children and they to you--they gathered around you like butterflies 'round a fragrant flower. They poked you and petted you and pulled your ears and your tail, and you smiled in their faces and begged them for more.

You were the best watchdog. I'll never forget the night you kept a burglar from breaking into our house. You cut loose with that awful, grating bark and roused us all, and we were safe, even if we didn't appreciate it at that moment. It wasn't till the next day that we found the crow-bar marks on our door where someone had tried to force the lock.

You were always there for me, and when your pain grew too great, I had to be there for you. Helping you to the Rainbow Bridge was the hardest thing I ever had to do. I still miss you. The place in my heart that was yours remains yours. You are still my dear friend.
