The big roll of black stuff is Johns-Manville Linacoustic. This is an important part of the room's acoustics. It is an absorptive material that will tame the unwanted low frequencies that plague most rooms. Instead of boomy bass, I should have smooth and tight bass response. The entire stage area gets treated as shown here.
Firring strips are secured to the walls so that the wall fabric can be subsequently stapled. They also provide a nailing surface for the moldings. Linacoustic is applied to the lower walls (extending to ear level when seated).

Wow! What a difference the trim makes! This was the one aspect of the project that I had help with. The time saving and the beautiful craftsmanship made the decision to hire someone for this work an easy one. Although I have installed crown before, all of the turns required around the columns (not to mention the chair rail and base) would surely have left me cursing in no time.
