Patched tabbies and tortoiseshells are almost always female. The combination of red and non-red colors only appears when the female cat has one dominant "O" gene and one recessive "o" gene attached to her X chromosomes. If the female were to have two dominant "O" genes present, she would be a red cat of some type. Having two "O" genes present on the X chromosomes does not mean there are no black genes in the cat's gene pool. Every cat has a pair of black pigment genes. The color is simply not visible in the presence of two overriding red genes.
