Your cat's nutrition is very important in providing a long and happy life together! There is alot of controversy over pet foods these days and what you feed your furball should be top priority to you! For a more extensive look into pet foods, please visit What's In Your Pets Food! Below are some important things to consider: Pet Food labels list food in descending order. The top few ingredients are the most important. Avoid any product that says "by-products"! It's worse than you can possibly imagine! Having chicken, turkey, lamb etc as a main ingredient is excellent and hard to come by. Watch out for the by-products! Also watch for labeling such as chicken "dinner". It may not contain as much chicken as you think! Wheat ground corn, corn gluten and rice are some good sources of carbohydrates and some protein. Minerals are important too. Look for calcium, phosphorous, sodium, potassium and magnesium. Cats are naturally raw meat eaters but feeding too much raw meat increases the risk of them contracting salmonella and toxoplasma which is obviously not good. If you wont eat it raw, then kitty shouldnt eat it raw. Cats should be fed twice a day. Reason being is the cats saliva needs some time to cleanse its mouth in between feedings. Constant nibbling at food increases the chances of getting plaque and tartar and also increase the chances of having a plump furball! Always give your kitty plenty of fresh water to drink. Cats dont have sweat glands in their skin and need to make up for the loss of water through their kidneys, lungs and intestinal tract. Avoid treating them with milk. Cats with allergies to milk can end up with vomiting and diarrhea. Some cats have a problem with perception when drinking water from a bowl. Try using one with a design on it to help. This should stop kitty from drinking from the faucet or even the fish tank which could be hazardous to kitty and or the fishies. Many people like to treat their cats with tuna fish. Beware, too much can create a Vitamin E deficiency. If you opt to give her tuna, make it an occasional tablespoon or so. Cats fed fish and fish oils all the time can develop a rare condition called steatitis. This causes the underneath of the skin to become inflamed and very hurtful to the touch. Cats love to chew on greens, so why not treat kitty to a pot of fresh catnip to chew on. Does your kitty suffer from hairballs? Try a spoonful of canned pumpkin. Avoid the petroleum jellys. They dont taste all that great! Taurine is a valuable amino acid that a cat needs. Supplemental doses have been shown to prevent retinal degeneration and one type of heart disease. If your cat has a food allergy, then a lamb and rice formula would be a good choice to try. Some kitties develop bumps on their head from food allergies. Cats love to climb along counters so please keep your human food covered securely or put away. Bones can be very hazardous to kitties! Do not store canned foods in the fridge for more than a two or three days. Bacteria grows rapidly and you may find kitty yacking all over the place! |
