It is very important to take care of your pet! Their life depends on you! To protect your pet from contracting potentially fatal diseases you should KEEP THEM INDOORS!

To educate yourself about the potential dangers of vaccinating your pet please visit the following links. After we read up on these Vaccine Associated Sarcomas (VAS) we swore to NEVER have our pets vaccinated again! Unfortunately if you have visited our furball Oscar's page you will learn that even though we stopped vaccinating a year ago (1991), he unfortuantely had been diagnosed with Fibrosarcoma after noticing a lump on his neck 9/02/2002 and died shortly thereafter. If anyone has any other informative links, please send them to us so we can post them here.

They should originally be tested for Feline Leukemia which is passed on through saliva and contact with other cats. This is the leading cause of illness and death in cats.

We have all heard of rabies and can be contracted from another infected animal such as other cats, dogs, skunks, raccoons, foxes etc. Read Our section furthur discussing RABIES. Your pets life may depend on it! Check with your states laws. Some states require by law that your cats and dogs have the rabies vaccine.

Another disease cats can obtain if let outdoors is called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus aka Feline Aids. It is spread through bite wounds during cat fights.

Cat Flu is another common disease of cats. Given good veterinary and nursing care, it is rare for a cat to die of cat flu.

Another reason to keep your furball indoors is Lyme disease. If your pet goes out, do a daily check for ticks. If the tick is infected and has bitten into your furball for ten to twelve hours then the tick can transmit the disease.

There are many poisonous plants out there that can cause serious injury even death to your beloved friend. Please check out our Toxic Plants section to safeguard your home and yard if you must let them out.

Does your cat seem to be twitching her ears all the time. Take a peak inside them. Do they appear to have black gunky stuff in them? This is probably ear mites and can cause infection if left untreated. Please seek out non-insecticidal remedies immediately. Your hairball will thank you for it! if you have a multi-cat home, chances are the others have them too!

Does your cat seem to be straining when trying to urinate? Does she cry when she tries? Does nothing seem to happen? GET HER TO THE VETS IMMEDIATELY!!! This common condition can kill your cat within hours to days at the most if not treated! Trust me! We've dealt with it! Happy ending with us fortunately because when I called the vet late at night (after watching the cat strain for about 24 hrs...dumb!) they opened their office and demanded I bring my kitty in immediately!

Are you cats eyes oozing with discolorment? Could be signs of infection. get it checked out! If your kitten has an upper respiratory infection you must keep her away from any adult cats in your home! It is very contagious!

You should never give your cat any aspirin! This includes ibuprofen, childrens aspirin and acetominophen. It can be toxic to your cat!

Dont allow your pet to obtain ANY chocolate! This can kill your pet! Trust us on this one! Our dog Freddy managed to climb atop a table and ate a pan of brownies. He died within hours!

Cats can get skin cancer. If you detect sores that dont seem to want to heal on the cats ears or nose you need to see the doctor for treatment. This has been shown to happen more in white cats.

Cats breathe at a rate of 20 to 30 breaths per minute. If you find your cat is breathing abnormally, panting or rapid breathing, this could be signs of respiratory illness or distress. You must see a vet immediately.

You should have a stool sample examined at the vets annually to make sure their are no parasites/worms within your pet.

There are alternatives to regular veterinary care. Some feel more comfortable going the route of homeopathic care, chiropractic and acupuntural(ouch!) care. You need to do whatever works best to take care of your pet!

Obviously, to prevent alot of bad things happening to your cute little furball, you need to restrain yourself from letting them outside and safeguard the inside! Its a dangerous world out there and you and your pets will be thankful with many years to come of good health!
